• ¼ yd. of light weight fabric for cover (broadcloth or linen would work – I used quilting cotton)

• ¼ yd. of light weight interfacing• 8¾” x 5¾” piece of poster board• 8¼” x 5¼” piece of decorative paper

(like scrapbook paper) for inner cover

• 10 sheets of rainbow colored printer paper (I used 2 of each: pink, yellow, blue, green, lavender)

• White, pink, & silver fabric paint• Rubber cement (optional, but

suggested)• Craft glue for fabric & paper• Basic sewing tools (sewing machine,

onenotebookthat’s43/8”wideand5¾”tallandcontains40pages.

Thereactuallyisn’tmuchsewinginvolvedinthisasidefromtheappliqué,soifyoucandothatyou’reset!

ThisprojectwasofcourseinspiredbyNyanCat,theadorablePoptartcatthatrocketsthroughspace!Itfeaturesrainbowpagesandscrapbookpaperlining.Thoughyoucanalsousethispatterntomakeanyotherkindofsimplenotebookusingasewingmachineinsteadofworkingbyhand.

ThefirstpartisprettifyingupyourbookcoverwiththeNyanCatappliqué.

Applyyourfusiblewebtoyourfabric,thenarrangeall

thepiecestoformthepicture.Theguidelinesonthepatternwillhelpgiveyouanideaofwheretoplaceeverythingasfaraslayeringgoes.Thispartcanbealittleheadacheinducingbutit’salsokindoffun:BWhenallyourpiecesareproperlyplaced,youcanironthemalldown.

Ifyouwentwithheavydutyfusiblewebyourpieceswillstaylikethat

justfine:DIfyouwentwithlightfusibleweb,you’llneedto

sewthepiecesinplace.Iusedaquickzigzagstitcharoundeachshapesothestitchesdon’toverwhelmthefabricpieces.

Tomakethenextstepseasier,you’llwanttorein-forcethefabric.Takeyourinterfacingandironittothebackofyourfinishedappliquédbookcover.

Withthefabricniceandsturdy,thisiswhereIaddedinthesmallerdetailsthatsewingjustcouldn’tdo:BIusedthehotpinktopaintsometinysprinklesonthepoptart,thewhitepainttocreatelittlereflectionsonhiseyes,andlastlythesilvertomakeaseaofstarsinthebackground.Ofcourse,letthepaintdrythor-oughlybeforegoingtothenextstep.

Takeallofyoursheetsofpaperandcuttheminhalfwidthwise.Allofyour

sheetsshouldnowbe8½”x5½”.

Nowtakeallofyoursmallersheetsandfoldthoseinhalfagain.Ifyou

haveabonefolderthatworksoutnicely.Tocreate

therainboweffect,layerallyourpinksheetsintoonestack,thendothesamewithyouryellowsheets.Slipyouryellowsheetsintothemiddleofthepinksheets.Repeatthiswiththegreen,blue,andpurplesheetstocreatethefullstrataofcolors.Youshouldhaveafullstackofrainbowcolorswhenyoufinish:D

Nowbacktothebookcover.We’reabouttocovertheposterboardwiththefabric,andthelinesIdrewfromthepatternguidelinesindicatewheretheposterboardwillgo.Tomakethecornersveryclean,you’llwanttoclipthefabrictogetridofexcessbulk.Makesuretoclipthefabricwithin⅛”ofthelinessoyoudon’tcliptoofarbyaccident.

Nowyoucanaddyourposterboard.Ipersonallyreallylikerubbercementforthisjob.It’salotcleanerthanotheradhesives,andit’sstrongwhilestillbeingatempo-raryhold.Ifyougoforit,applyathincoattoboththebacksideofyourcoverandonesideoftheposterboard.Whenthesurfacelooksslightlydry,pressthemtogether.Youcouldalsouseregularcraftgluehere,thoughIwouldbesuretobrushitonwithafoambrushtogetaniceevencoatingofglue.

Nowwe’llusetherubbercementagainforeachoftheedges.Oncethose

arereadytoadhere,foldtheedgesovertoaffixthem

inplace.Ithelpsheretouseamalletoranothersimilarheavytooltogetthecornersandedgesniceandflatandcrisp.Onceagainyoucouldusecraftgluehereifyouprefer.

Togetthecoverlookingmorelikearealbook,you’llneedtofolditinhalfwith

wrongsidesfacing.Thisismucheasierifyouscorethe

paperwithabonefolderasyouseemewithhere,butanotherpointedblunttoolalsoworkslikeapenwithoutinkorachopstick.Scorethepaperdownthemiddlealongthefoldlineindicatedbythepatternguideline,anditcreasesthepapernicelyforyou.Dothesamethingwithyourliningpaperfromthenicesideofthepapersoitfoldswithrightsidestogether.

Withbothpiecesnicelyscored,youcangluethemtogether.Here’swhereyou’llwanttouserealcraftglue,asrubbercementisn’tstrongenoughforthebondweneedhere.Centerthepaperliningontheinsideofthebookwithwrongsidesfacingandglueitinplacewiththecraftglue.Waituntilitdriescompletelyuntilyoumoveontothenextstep.

Nowhere’sthepartwhereit’sreallybecomingabook!Takeyourfoldedrainbowpapersandcenterthemalongthemiddlecreaseyoujustmade,soeverythingalllinesup.Itshouldlooklikeyou’vegotarealbookgoing!Exceptforthefactthatthepapersaren’theldinplace.Todothat,we’regoingtodoaquickseamdownthemiddle,rightintothatfold.Besuretousearatherlongstitchlength(8-9stitchesperinchshouldbegood),asshortstitcheswillperforatethepaper.
