The Role of the City Council

The New York City Council is the law-making body of the City of New York. It is comprised of 51 Members

from 51 different Council Districts throughout the five boroughs. Council monitors the operation and

performance of city agencies, makes land use decisions and has sole responsibility for approving the city's budget. It also legislates on a wide range of other subjects. The Council is an equal partner with the

Mayor in the governing of New York City.

Councilmember Margaret Chin was elected to the New York City Council in 2010, as the representative for District 1 of lower Manhattan; Financial District, Battery Park City, Two Bridges, Civic Center, TriBeCa, Chinatown, Little Italy, Lower East Side (part), Greenwich Village (part), Governors Island. Chin has twice been elected by her colleagues to serve as an executive member of the Black, Latino, and Asian Caucus. In her many years of public service she served on boards of many not-for-profit organizations.

Councilmember Rosie Mendez is a life-long New Yorker and has been serving the people of District 2 for nearly two decades. Councilmember Corey Johnson publicly came out as a gay man when he was captain of his high school football team. While Johnson serves in the 3rd district, he stood up for protecting our parks and recreational facilities from over development, reducing class sizes in our public schools, and restoring the Mayor’s proposed cuts to senior centers and meal programs. Johnson represents neighborhoods of Manhattan in Chelsea, Greenwich Village, SoHo, Hell's Kitchen, and parts of Midtown.

Councilmember Daniel R. Garodnick represents Upper East Side, Central Park South, Grand Central, Tudor City, Waterside, Peter Cooper Village, Carnegie Hill, Stuyvesant Town, United Nations; part of Yorkville, Turtle Bay. Before joining the City Council, he also directed the New York Civil Rights Coalition's "Unlearning Stereotypes: Civil Rights and Race Relations Program" in 42 New York City public schools, teaching students non-violent ways to combat racial discrimination, and how to use the processes of government to affect social change.

Councilmember Kallos has fought to bring reform and transparency to government agencies as Chair of the Committee on Governmental Operations of the City Council. Councilmember Mark Levine founded one of New York City’s newest political clubs, the Barack Obama Democratic Club of Upper Manhattan, which has quickly become a force for empowering community residents to make their voice heard in local politics. Councilmember Melissa Mark-Viverito currently serves as the Speaker of the New York City Council, the first Puerto Rican and Latina to hold a citywide elected position. Councilmember James Vacca is a life-long resident of the Bronx, Jimmy Vacca was born and raised in Pelham Bay. Vacaa’s career in public service really began at the early age of 13, when he organized his fellow JHS students to rally for better bus service from the MTA. Before long, Jimmy was fighting for stop signs, traffic lights, the fixing of potholes, and other local issues that affected his community. As a representative of the Bronx's 13th Council District, Vacca serves neighborhoods of Throgs Neck, Pelham Bay, Country Club, City Island, Westchester Square, Zerega, Morris Park, Pelham Parkway, and Allerton.

Councilmember Ritchie Torres is a product of Bronx public schools, and got an early start in public service at the age of 16. He represents the communities of the Central Bronx. Torres is the first openly gay candidate to be elected to legislative office in the Bronx and the youngest member of the City Council.

Councilmember Rory Lancman was born and raised in Queens, where he has lived in what is now the 24th Council District for thirty-eight years. Lancman is a first-term City Councilmember representing New York City's 24th City Council District. The district covers Fresh Meadows, Briarwood, Hillcrest, Jamaica Hills, Jamaica Estates, Kew Garden Hills. Formerly, Lancman served as a New York State Assembly member, representing the 25th Assembly District in Queens from 2007-2013.

Councilmember Daniel Dromm was elected to the New York City Council in 2010, as the representative for District 25, covering Jackson Heights and Elmhurst. Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer is the representative for communities of Woodside, Sunnyside, Long Island City, and Astoria. Councilmember Stephen Levin entered the New York City Council in January, 2010, as the representative for District 33.
