GLOBAL E-MAIL SERVICES NXTMAIL OVER IRIDIUM WHAT IS NXTMAIL OVER IRIDIUM? NxtMail over Iridium is a global E-Mail service that provides mobile E-Mail and mobile web browsing using selected personal devices. The NxtMail service permits users with WiFi-enabled BlackBerry® smartphones, iPhone™ mobile devices and selected PDAs to access their E-Mail accounts automatically and transparently by simply activating the WiFi feature on their device. ADVANTAGES OF NXTMAIL OVER IRIDIUM: NxtMail enables access to E-Mail and mobile web browsing while travelling onboard any NxtMail-equipped aircraft. NxtMail over Iridium provides global coverage without the limitations inherent to regional systems that rely on radio towers or other services that use geosynchronous Satcom systems. NxtMail also ensures coverage without loss of service experienced in flying polar or northern routes. The NxtMail Server is very economical and with its intelligent link management features, keeps airtime access and costs to a minimum. The simplicity of the installation and the light-weight inexpensive avionics make the NxtMail system the least expensive E-Mail solution in the industry, suitable for installation on any size and type of aircraft. THE SYSTEM: A typical installation has two ICG avionics components: the NxtMail Server, and the ICG NxtLink Iridium system. The NxtMail server facilitates and manages connections and data routing for the WiFi-capable peripheral devices while the NxtLink Iridium system provides access to send and receive data over the Iridium satellite network. The NxtMail server provides the IEEE 802-11b Wireless Access Point as well as the DHCP services to provide access for user devices. The NxtLink Iridium system can be any model, the selection often determined by the number of channels required for voice and data services. SUPPORTED NETWORKS: NxtMail supports connection to the BlackBerry® Internet Service (BIS), BlackBerry® Enterprise Server (BES) as well as other E-Mail networks listed below. Once a device has established an 802.11b WiFi connection with the NxtMail Server’s Wireless Access Point, the NxtMail Server will automatically provide connection to an Iridium channel and begin transacting E-Mail messages. NxtMail supports connection to most of the popular E-Mail networks, some of which are listed below: Webmail Yahoo! Mail Gmail Yahoo! ForWardiNG E-mail attachmENts:The NxtMail server is intended to provide reliable and efficient text based E-mail services. as a consequence of the limited data rate capabilities of an iridium channel, it is not possible to replicate all of the E-mail features available on a terrestrial 3G network. Nxtmail via iridium is not recommended as a facility to transfer large attachments or for high graphical content web browsing. For E-mail attachments sent in the Ground to air direction, a more efficient method of delivery is via printable fax transmissions to an onboard fax machine. this service, provided by the “On-GO” fax server, provides an efficient and cost-effective method of delivering large attachments such as Word documents, spread sheets, PDF files, etc. An additional advantage is that the same E-mail originated message can be sent as a broadcast to all aircraft in a fleet. in the air to Ground direction, optimum performance is obtained when users communicate in a text based E-mail format or limit attachments to file sizes less than 50KB.

suPPortiNG hardWarE:the Nxtmail server will operate with any of the icG Nxtlink iridium systems: the ics-100, 200, 120a, 220a and 400. though it is not a requirement to provide a dedicated transceiver for the Nxtmail service, it is recommended that a multi-channel iridium system be installed if voice services are required as well.
