    PROVERBS 1 Proverbs 1

    1 The proverbs of Solʹo·mon, the son of David, the king of Israel:

    1 The proverbs of Solʹo·mon the son of David, the king of Israel,

    2 To learn wisdom and discipline;

    2 for one to know wisdom and discipline,

    To understand wise sayings; to discern the sayings of understanding,

    3 To acquire the discipline that gives insight,

    3 to receive the discipline that gives insight,

    Righteousness, good judgment, and uprightness; righteousness and judgment and uprightness,

    4 To impart shrewdness to the inexperienced;

    4 to give to the inexperienced ones shrewdness,

    To give a young man knowledge and thinking ability. to a young man knowledge and thinking ability.

    5 A wise person listens and takes in more instruction;

    5 A wise person will listen and take in more instruction,

    A man of understanding acquires skillful direction and a man of understanding is the one who acquires skillful direction,

    6 To understand a proverb and a puzzling saying,

    6 to understand a proverb and a puzzling saying,

    The words of the wise and their riddles. the words of wise persons and their riddles.

    7 The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of knowledge.

    7 The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of knowledge.

    Only fools despise wisdom and discipline. Wisdom and discipline are what mere fools have despised.

    8 Listen, my son, to the discipline of your father,

    8 Listen, my son, to the discipline of your father,

    And do not forsake the instruction of your mother. and do not forsake the law of your mother.

    9 They are an attractive wreath for your head

    9 For they are a wreath of attractiveness to your head

    And a fine ornament for your neck. and a fine necklace to your throat.

    10 My son, if sinners try to entice you, do not consent.

    10 My son, if sinners try to seduce you, do not consent.

    11 If they say: “Come with us.

    11 If they keep saying: “Do go with us.

    Let us set an ambush to shed blood. Do let us lie in ambush for blood.

    We will lie hidden, waiting for innocent victims without cause. Do let us lie in concealment for the innocent men without any cause.

    12 We will swallow them alive as the Grave does,

    12 Let us swallow them down alive just like Sheʹol,

    Whole, like those going down to the pit. even whole, like those going down into a pit.

    13 Let us seize all their precious treasures;

    13 Let us find all sorts of precious valuables.

    We will fill our houses with spoil. Let us fill our houses with spoil.

    14 You should join us,

    14 Your lot you ought to cast in among us.

    And we will all share equally what we steal.” Let there come to be just one bag belonging to all of us”—

    15 My son, do not follow them.

    15 my son, do not go in the way with them.

    Keep your feet off their path, Hold back your foot from their roadway.

    16 For their feet run to do evil;

    16 For their feet are those that run to sheer badness,

    They hurry to shed blood. and they keep hastening to shed blood.

    17 It is surely in vain to spread a net in full sight of a bird.

    17 For it is for nothing that the net is spread before the eyes of anything owning wings.

    18 That is why these lie in ambush to shed blood;

    18 Consequently they themselves lie in ambush for the very blood of these;

    They lie hidden to take the lives of others. they lie in concealment for their souls.

    19 These are the ways of those seeking dishonest profit,

    19 Thus are the paths of everyone making unjust profit.

    Which will take away the life of those who obtain it. It takes away the very soul of its owners.

    20 True wisdom cries aloud in the street.

    20 True wisdom itself keeps crying aloud in the very street.

    It keeps raising its voice in the public squares. In the public squares it keeps giving forth its voice.

  • 21 At the corner of the busy streets it calls out.

    21 At the upper end of the noisy streets it calls out.

    At the entrances of the city gates it says: At the entrances of the gates into the city it says its own sayings:

    22 “How long will you inexperienced ones love inexperience?

    22 “How long will YOU inexperienced ones keep loving inexperience,

    How long will you ridiculers take pleasure in ridicule? and [how long] must YOU ridiculers desire for yourselves outright ridicule,

    And how long will you foolish ones hate knowledge? and [how long] will YOU stupid ones keep hating knowledge?

    23 Respond to my reproof.

    23 Turn back at my reproof.

    Then I will pour out my spirit for you; Then to YOU I will cause my spirit to bubble forth;

    I will make my words known to you. I will make my words known to YOU.

    24 Because I called out, but you kept refusing,

    24 Because I have called out but YOU keep refusing,

    I stretched out my hand, but no one was paying attention, I have stretched out my hand but there is no one paying attention,

    25 You kept neglecting all my advice

    25 and YOU keep neglecting all my counsel,

    And rejecting my reproof, and my reproof YOU have not accepted,

    26 I also will laugh when disaster strikes you;

    26 I also, for my part, shall laugh at YOUR own disaster,

    I will mock when what you dread comes, I shall mock when what YOU dread comes,

    27 When what you dread comes like a storm,

    27 when what YOU dread comes just like a storm,

    And your disaster arrives like a storm wind, and YOUR own disaster gets here just like a storm wind,

    When distress and trouble come upon you. when distress and hard times come upon YOU.

    28 At that time they will keep calling me, but I will not answer;

    28 At that time they will keep calling me, but I shall not answer;

    They will eagerly look for me, but they will not find me, they will keep looking for me, but they will not find me,

    29 Because they hated knowledge,

    29 for the reason that they hated knowledge,

    And they did not choose to fear Jehovah. and the fear of Jehovah they did not choose.

    30 They refused my advice;

    30 They did not consent to my counsel;

    They disrespected all my reproof. they disrespected all my reproof.

    31 So they will bear the consequences of their way,

    31 So they will eat from the fruitage of their way,

    And they will be glutted with their own counsel. and they will be glutted with their own counsels.

    32 For the waywardness of the inexperienced will kill them,

    32 For the renegading of the inexperienced ones is what will kill them,

    And the complacency of fools will destroy them. and the easygoingness of the stupid is what will destroy them.

    33 But the one listening to me will dwell in security 33 As for the one listening to me, he will reside in security

    And be undisturbed by the dread of calamity.” and be undisturbed from dread of calamity.”

    2 My son, if you accept my sayings 2 My son, if you will receive my sayings

    And treasure up my commandments, and treasure up my own commandments with yourself,

    2 By making your ear attentive to wisdom

    2 so as to pay attention to wisdom with your ear,

    And inclining your heart to discernment; that you may incline your heart to discernment;

    3 Moreover, if you call out for understanding

    3 if, moreover, you call out for understanding itself

    And raise your voice for discernment; and you give forth your voice for discernment itself,

    4 If you keep seeking for it as for silver,

    4 if you keep seeking for it as for silver,

    And you keep searching for it as for hidden treasures; and as for hid treasures you keep searching for it,

    5 Then you will understand the fear of Jehovah,

    5 in that case you will understand the fear of Jehovah,

    And you will find the knowledge of God. and you will find the very knowledge of God.

    6 For Jehovah himself gives wisdom;

    6 For Jehovah himself gives wisdom;

    From his mouth come knowledge and discernment. out of his mouth there are knowledge and discernment.

  • 7 He treasures up practical wisdom for the upright;

    7 And for the upright ones he will treasure up practical wisdom;

    He is a shield for those walking in integrity. for those walking in integrity he is a shield,

    8 He watches over the paths of justice,

    8 by observing the paths of judgment,

    And he will guard the way of his loyal ones. and he will guard the very way of his loyal ones.

    9 Then you will understand what is righteous and just and fair,

    9 In that case you will understand righteousness and judgment and uprightness,

    The entire course of what is good. the entire course of what is good.

    10 When wisdom enters your heart

    10 When wisdom enters into your heart

    And knowledge becomes pleasant to your soul, and knowledge itself becomes pleasant to your very soul,

    11 Thinking ability will keep watch over you,

    11 thinking ability itself will keep guard over you,

    And discernment will safeguard you, discernment itself will safeguard you,

    12 To save you from the bad course,

    12 to deliver you from the bad way,

    From the man speaking perverse things, from the man speaking perverse things,

    13 From those leaving the upright paths

    13 from those leaving the paths of uprightness

    To walk in the ways of darkness, to walk in the ways of darkness,

    14 From those who rejoice in wrongdoing,

    14 from those who are rejoicing in doing bad,

    Who find joy in the perverseness of evil, who are joyful in the perverse things of badness;

    15 Those whose paths are crooked

    15 those whose paths are crooked

    And whose entire course is devious. and who are devious in their general course;

    16 It will save you from the wayward woman,

    16 to deliver you from the strange woman,

    From the smooth words of the immoral woman, from the foreign woman who has made her own sayings smooth,

    17 Who abandons the close companion of her youth

    17 who is leaving the confidential friend of her youth

    And forgets the covenant of her God; and who has forgotten the very covenant of her God.

    18 For her house sinks down into death,

    18 For down to death her house does sink

    And her paths lead to those powerless in death. and down to those impotent in death her tracks.

    19 None of those having relations with her will return,

    19 None of those having relations with her will come back,

    Nor will they regain the pathways of life. nor will they regain the paths of those living.

    20 So follow the way of good people

    20 The purpose is that you may walk in the way of good people

    And stay on the paths of the righteous, and that the paths of the righteous ones you may keep.

    21 For only the upright will reside in the earth,

    21 For the upright are the ones that will reside in the earth,

    And the blameless will remain in it. and the blameless are the ones that will be left over in it.

    22 As for the wicked, they will be cut off from the earth,

    22 As regards the wicked, they will be cut off from the very earth;

    And the treacherous will be torn away from it. and as for the treacherous, they will be torn away from it.

    3 My son, do not forget my teaching, 3 My son, my law do not forget,

    And may your heart observe my commandments, and my commandments may your heart observe,

    2 Because they will add many days

    2 because length of days

    And years of life and peace to you. and years of life and peace will be added to you.

    3 Do not let loyal love and faithfulness leave you.

    3 May loving-kindness and trueness themselves not leave you.

    Tie them around your neck; Tie them about your throat.

    Write them on the tablet of your heart; Write them upon the tablet of your heart,

    4 Then you will find favor and good insight

    4 and so find favor and good insight

    In the eyes of God and man. in the eyes of God and of earthling man.

  • 5 Trust in Jehovah with all your heart,

    5 Trust in Jehovah with all your heart

    And do not rely on your own understanding. and do not lean upon your own understanding.

    6 In all your ways take notice of him,

    6 In all your ways take notice of him,

    And he will make your paths straight. and he himself will make your paths straight.

    7 Do not become wise in your own eyes.

    7 Do not become wise in your own eyes.

    Fear Jehovah and turn away from bad. Fear Jehovah and turn away from bad.

    8 It will be a healing to your body

    8 May it become a healing to your navel

    And refreshment for your bones. and a refreshment to your bones.

    9 Honor Jehovah with your valuable things,

    9 Honor Jehovah with your valuable things

    With the firstfruits of all your produce; and with the firstfruits of all your produce.

    10 Then your storehouses will be completely filled,

    10 Then your stores of supply will be filled with plenty;

    And your vats will overflow with new wine. and with new wine your own press vats will overflow.

    11 My son, do not reject the discipline of Jehovah,

    11 The discipline of Jehovah, O my son,

    And do not loathe his reproof, do not reject; and do not abhor his reproof,

    12 For those whom Jehovah loves he reproves,

    12 because the one whom Jehovah loves he reproves,

    Just as a father does a son in whom he delights. even as a father does a son in whom he finds pleasure.

    13 Happy is the man who finds wisdom

    13 Happy is the man that has found wisdom,

    And the man who acquires discernment; and the man that gets discernment,

    14 To gain it is better than gaining silver,

    14 for having it as gain is better than having silver as gain

    And having it as profit is better than having gold. and having it as produce than gold itself.

    15 It is more precious than corals;

    15 It is more precious than corals,

    Nothing you desire can compare to it. and all other delights of yours cannot be made equal to it.

    16 Long life is in its right hand;

    16 Length of days is in its right hand;

    Riches and glory are in its left hand. in its left hand there are riches and glory.

    17 Its ways are pleasant,

    17 Its ways are ways of pleasantness,

    And all its paths are peaceful. and all its roadways are peace.

    18 It is a tree of life to those who take hold of it,

    18 It is a tree of life to those taking hold of it,

    And those who keep firm hold of it will be called happy. and those keeping fast hold of it are to be called happy.

    19 Jehovah founded the earth in wisdom.

    19 Jehovah himself in wisdom founded the earth.

    He solidly established the heavens in discernment. He solidly fixed the heavens in discernment.

    20 By his knowledge the watery deeps were split apart

    20 By his knowledge the watery deeps themselves were split apart,

    And the cloudy skies dripped with dew. and the cloudy skies keep dripping down light rain.

    21 My son, do not lose sight of them.

    21 My son, may they not get away from your eyes.

    Safeguard practical wisdom and thinking ability; Safeguard practical wisdom and thinking ability,

    22 They will give you life

    22 and they will prove to be life

    And be an adornment for your neck; to your soul and charm to your throat.

    23 Then you will walk on your way in safety,

    23 In that case you will walk in security on your way,

    And your foot will never stumble. and even your foot will not strike against anything.

    24 When you lie down, you will have no fear;

    24 Whenever you lie down you will feel no dread;

    You will lie down, and your sleep will be pleasant. and you will certainly lie down, and your sleep must be pleasurable.

    25 You will not fear any sudden terror

    25 You will not need to be afraid of any sudden dreadful thing,

    Nor the storm that is coming on the wicked. nor of the storm upon the wicked ones, because it is coming.

  • 26 For Jehovah will prove to be your source of confidence;

    26 For Jehovah himself will prove to be, in effect, your confidence,

    He will keep your foot from being caught. and he will certainly keep your foot against capture.

    27 Do not withhold good from those to whom you should give it

    27 Do not hold back good from those to whom it is owing,

    If it is within your power to help. when it happens to be in the power of your hand to do [it].

    28 Do not say to your neighbor, “Go away; come back later!

    28 Do not say to your fellowman: “Go, and come back

    I will give it to you tomorrow,” and tomorrow I shall give,”

    If you can give it now. when there is something with you.

    29 Do not plot harm against your neighbor

    29 Do not fabricate against your fellowman anything bad,

    When he lives in a sense of security with you. when he is dwelling in a sense of security with you.

    30 Do not quarrel with a man for no reason

    30 Do not quarrel with a man without cause,

    If he has done nothing bad to you. if he has rendered no bad to you.

    31 Do not envy the violent man

    31 Do not become envious of the man of violence,

    Nor choose any of his ways, nor choose any of his ways.

    32 For Jehovah detests a devious person,

    32 For the devious person is a detestable thing to Jehovah,

    But His close friendship is with the upright. but His intimacy is with the upright ones.

    33 The curse of Jehovah is on the house of the wicked one,

    33 The curse of Jehovah is on the house of the wicked one,

    But he blesses the home of the righteous. but the abiding place of the righteous ones he blesses.

    34 For he mocks those who ridicule,

    34 If it has to do with ridiculers, he himself will deride;

    But he shows favor to the meek. but to the meek ones he will show favor.

    35 The wise will inherit honor,

    35 Honor is what the wise ones will come to possess,

    But the stupid ones glorify dishonor. but the stupid ones are exalting dishonor.

    4 Listen, my sons, to the discipline of a father; 4 Listen, O sons, to the discipline of a father and pay attention,

    Pay attention in order to gain understanding, so as to know understanding.

    2 For I will give you good instruction;

    2 For good instruction is what I certainly shall give to YOU.

    Do not forsake my teaching. My law DO not leave.

    3 I was a true son to my father

    3 For I proved to be a real son to my father,

    And the one especially loved by my mother. tender and the only one before my mother.

    4 He taught me and said: “May your heart hold fast to my words.

    4 And he would instruct me and say to me: “May your heart keep fast hold of my words.

    Keep my commandments and continue living. Keep my commandments and continue living.

    5 Acquire wisdom, acquire understanding.

    5 Acquire wisdom, acquire understanding.

    Do not forget, and do not turn aside from what I say. Do not forget, and do not turn aside from the sayings of my mouth.

    6 Do not forsake it, and it will protect you.

    6 Do not leave it, and it will keep you.

    Love it, and it will safeguard you. Love it, and it will safeguard you.

    7 Wisdom is the most important thing, so acquire wisdom,

    7 Wisdom is the prime thing. Acquire wisdom;

    And with all you acquire, acquire understanding. and with all that you acquire, acquire understanding.

    8 Highly esteem it, and it will exalt you.

    8 Highly esteem it, and it will exalt you.

    It will honor you because you embrace it. It will glorify you because you embrace it.

    9 It will place an attractive wreath on your head;

    9 To your head it will give a wreath of charm;

    It will adorn you with a crown of beauty.” a crown of beauty it will bestow upon you.”

    10 Listen, my son, and accept my sayings,

    10 Hear, my son, and accept my sayings.

    And the years of your life will be many. Then for you the years of life will become many.

  • 11 I will instruct you in the way of wisdom;

    11 I will instruct you even in the way of wisdom;

    I will lead you in the tracks of uprightness. I will cause you to tread in the tracks of uprightness.

    12 When you walk, your steps will not be hindered;

    12 When you walk, your pace will not be cramped;

    And if you run, you will not stumble. and if you run, you will not stumble.

    13 Hold on to discipline; do not let it go.

    13 Take hold on discipline; do not let go.

    Safeguard it, for it means your life. Safeguard it, for it itself is your life.

    14 Do not enter the path of the wicked,

    14 Into the path of the wicked ones do not enter,

    And do not walk in the way of evil men. and do not walk straight on into the way of the bad ones.

    15 Shun it, do not take it;

    15 Shun it, do not pass along by it;

    Turn away from it, and pass it by. turn aside from it, and pass along.

    16 For they cannot sleep unless they do what is bad.

    16 For they do not sleep unless they do badness,

    They are robbed of sleep unless they cause someone’s downfall. and their sleep has been snatched away unless they cause someone to stumble.

    17 They feed themselves with the bread of wickedness,

    17 For they have fed themselves with the bread of wickedness,

    And they drink the wine of violence. and the wine of acts of violence is what they drink.

    18 But the path of the righteous is like the bright morning light

    18 But the path of the righteous ones is like the bright light

    That grows brighter and brighter until full daylight. that is getting lighter and lighter until the day is firmly established.

    19 The way of the wicked is like the darkness;

    19 The way of the wicked ones is like the gloom;

    They do not know what makes them stumble. they have not known at what they keep stumbling.

    20 My son, pay attention to my words;

    20 My son, to my words do pay attention.

    Listen carefully to my sayings. To my sayings incline your ear.

    21 Do not lose sight of them;

    21 May they not get away from your eyes.

    Keep them deep within your heart, Keep them in the midst of your heart.

    22 For they are life to those who find them

    22 For they are life to those finding them

    And health to their whole body. and health to all their flesh.

    23 Above all the things that you guard, safeguard your heart,

    23 More than all else that is to be guarded, safeguard your heart,

    For out of it are the sources of life. for out of it are the sources of life.

    24 Put crooked speech away from you,

    24 Remove from yourself the crookedness of speech;

    And keep devious talk far away from you. and the deviousness of lips put far away from yourself.

    25 Your eyes should look straight ahead,

    25 As for your eyes, straight ahead they should look,

    Yes, fix your gaze straight ahead of you. yes, your own beaming eyes should gaze straight in front of you.

    26 Smooth out the course of your feet,

    26 Smooth out the course of your foot,

    And all your ways will be sure. and may all your own ways be firmly established.

    27 Do not incline to the right or the left.

    27 Do not incline to the right hand or to the left.

    Turn your feet away from what is bad. Remove your foot from what is bad.

    5 My son, pay attention to my wisdom. 5 My son, to my wisdom O do pay attention.

    Listen carefully to my discernment, To my discernment incline your ears,

    2 So that you may guard your thinking abilities

    2 so as to guard thinking abilities;

    And safeguard knowledge with your lips. and may your own lips safeguard knowledge itself.

    3 For the lips of a wayward woman drip like a honeycomb,

    3 For as a honeycomb the lips of a strange woman keep dripping,

    And her mouth is smoother than oil. and her palate is smoother than oil.

    4 But in the end she is as bitter as wormwood

    4 But the aftereffect from her is as bitter as wormwood;

    And as sharp as a two-edged sword. it is as sharp as a two-edged sword.

  • 5 Her feet descend into death.

    5 Her feet are descending to death.

    Her steps lead straight to the Grave. Her very steps take hold on Sheʹol itself.

    6 She gives no thought to the path of life.

    6 The path of life she does not contemplate.

    Her course wanders, but she does not know where. Her tracks have wandered she does not know [where].

    7 Now, my sons, listen to me

    7 So now, O sons, listen to me

    And do not turn away from what I am saying. and do not turn away from the sayings of my mouth.

    8 Stay far away from her;

    8 Keep your way far off from alongside her,

    Do not go near the entrance of her house, and do not get near to the entrance of her house,

    9 So that you may not give your dignity to others

    9 that you may not give to others your dignity,

    Nor reap years of what is cruel; nor your years to what is cruel;

    10 So that strangers may not drain your resources

    10 that strangers may not satisfy themselves with your power,

    And what you labored for go to the house of a foreigner. nor the things you got by pain be in the house of a foreigner,

    11 Otherwise, you will groan at the end of your life

    11 nor you have to groan in your future when your flesh

    When your flesh and body waste away and your organism come to an end.

    12 And you say: “How I hated discipline!

    12 And you will have to say: “How I have hated discipline

    How my heart despised reproof! and my heart has disrespected even reproof!

    13 I did not listen to the voice of my instructors

    13 And I have not listened to the voice of my instructors,

    Or pay attention to my teachers. and to my teachers I have not inclined my ear.

    14 I have come to the brink of complete ruin

    14 Easily I have come to be in every sort of badness

    In the midst of the entire congregation.” in the midst of the congregation and of the assembly.”

    15 Drink water from your own cistern

    15 Drink water out of your own cistern,

    And flowing water from your own well. and tricklings out of the midst of your own well.

    16 Should your springs be dispersed outside,

    16 Should your springs be scattered out of doors,

    Your streams of water in the public squares? [your] streams of water in the public squares themselves?

    17 Let them be for you alone,

    17 Let them prove to be for you alone,

    And not for strangers with you. and not for strangers with you.

    18 May your own fountain be blessed,

    18 Let your water source prove to be blessed,

    And may you rejoice with the wife of your youth, and rejoice with the wife of your youth,

    19 A loving doe, a graceful mountain goat.

    19 a lovable hind and a charming mountain goat.

    Let her breasts satisfy you at all times. Let her own breasts intoxicate you at all times.

    May you be captivated by her love constantly. With her love may you be in an ecstasy constantly.

    20 So why, my son, should you be captivated by a wayward woman

    20 So why should you, my son, be in an ecstasy with a strange woman

    Or embrace the bosom of an immoral woman? or embrace the bosom of a foreign woman?

    21 For the ways of man are before the eyes of Jehovah;

    21 For the ways of man are in front of the eyes of Jehovah,

    He examines all his paths. and he is contemplating all his tracks.

    22 The wicked one is ensnared by his own errors,

    22 His own errors will catch the wicked one,

    And he will be caught in the ropes of his own sin. and in the ropes of his own sin he will be taken hold of.

    23 He will die for lack of discipline

    23 He will be the one to die because there is no discipline,

    And go astray because of his excessive foolishness. and [because] in the abundance of his foolishness he goes astray.

    6 My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, 6 My son, if you have gone surety for your fellowman,

    If you have given your handshake to a stranger, [if] you have given your handshake even to the stranger,

  • 2 If you have been ensnared by your promise,

    2 [if] you have been ensnared by the sayings of your mouth,

    Caught by the words of your mouth, [if] you have been caught by the sayings of your mouth,

    3 Do this, my son, and free yourself,

    3 take this action then, my son, and deliver yourself,

    For you have fallen into the hand of your neighbor: for you have come into the palm of your fellowman:

    Go and humble yourself and urgently plead with your neighbor. Go humble yourself and storm your fellowman with importunities.

    4 Do not allow your eyes to sleep,

    4 Do not give any sleep to your eyes,

    Nor your eyelids to slumber. nor any slumber to your beaming eyes.

    5 Free yourself like a gazelle from the hunter’s hand,

    5 Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hand

    Like a bird from the hand of the birdcatcher. and like a bird from the hand of the birdcatcher.

    6 Go to the ant, you lazy one;

    6 Go to the ant, you lazy one;

    Observe its ways and become wise. see its ways and become wise.

    7 Although it has no commander, officer, or ruler,

    7 Although it has no commander, officer or ruler,

    8 It prepares its food in the summer,

    8 it prepares its food even in the summer;

    And it gathers its food supplies in the harvest. it has gathered its food supplies even in the harvest.

    9 How long, you lazy one, will you lie there?

    9 How long, you lazy one, will you keep lying down?

    When will you rise up from your sleep? When will you rise up from your sleep?

    10 A little sleep, a little slumbering,

    10 A little more sleep, a little more slumbering,

    A little folding of the hands to rest, a little more folding of the hands in lying down,

    11 And your poverty will come like a bandit,

    11 and your poverty will certainly come just like some rover,

    And your want like an armed man. and your want like an armed man.

    12 A useless and wicked man walks about with crooked speech;

    12 A good-for-nothing man, a man of hurtfulness, is walking with crookedness of speech,

    13 He winks with his eye, signals with his foot, and motions with his fingers.

    13 winking with his eye, making signs with his foot, making indications with his fingers.

    14 With a perverted heart,

    14 Perverseness is in his heart.

    He is always scheming evil and spreading contentions. He is fabricating something bad all the time. He keeps sending out merely contentions.

    15 Therefore, his disaster will come suddenly;

    15 That is why suddenly there will come his disaster;

    In a moment he will be broken beyond healing. in an instant he will be broken, and there will be no healing.

    16 There are six things that Jehovah hates;

    16 There are six things that Jehovah does hate;

    Yes, seven things that he detests: yes, seven are things detestable to his soul:

    17 Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

    17 lofty eyes, a false tongue, and hands that are shedding innocent blood,

    18 A heart plotting wicked schemes, and feet that run quickly to evil,

    18 a heart fabricating hurtful schemes, feet that are in a hurry to run to badness,

    19 A false witness who lies with every breath,

    19 a false witness that launches forth lies,

    And anyone sowing contentions among brothers. and anyone sending forth contentions among brothers.

    20 Observe, my son, the commandment of your father,

    20 Observe, O my son, the commandment of your father,

    And do not forsake the instruction of your mother. and do not forsake the law of your mother.

    21 Always bind them around your heart;

    21 Tie them upon your heart constantly;

    Tie them about your neck. bind them upon your throat.

    22 When you walk about, it will lead you;

    22 When you walk about, it will lead you;

    When you lie down, it will stand guard over you; when you lie down, it will stand guard over you;

    And when you awaken, it will speak to you. and when you have waked up, it itself will make you its concern.

  • 23 For the commandment is a lamp,

    23 For the commandment is a lamp,

    And the law is a light, and a light the law is,

    And the reproofs of discipline are the way to life. and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life,

    24 They will guard you against the bad woman,

    24 to guard you against the bad woman,

    Against the seductive tongue of the immoral woman. against the smoothness of the tongue of the foreign woman.

    25 Do not desire her beauty in your heart

    25 Do not desire her prettiness in your heart,

    Or allow her to captivate you with her alluring eyes, and may she not take you with her lustrous eyes,

    26 For because of a prostitute, a man is reduced to a loaf of bread,

    26 because in behalf of a woman prostitute [one comes down] to a round loaf of bread;

    But the wife of another man preys on a precious life. but as regards another man’s wife, she hunts even for a precious soul.

    27 Can a man rake fire to his chest and not burn his garments?

    27 Can a man rake together fire into his bosom and yet his very garments not be burned?

    28 Or can a man walk on hot coals without scorching his feet?

    28 Or can a man walk upon the coals and his feet themselves not be scorched?

    29 It is the same with anyone having relations with his neighbor’s wife;

    29 Likewise with anyone having relations with the wife of his fellowman,

    No one who touches her will go unpunished. no one touching her will remain unpunishable.

    30 People do not despise a thief

    30 People do not despise a thief

    If he steals to satisfy himself when he is hungry. just because he commits thievery to fill his soul when he is hungry.

    31 Yet, when found, he will repay sevenfold;

    31 But, when found, he will make it good with seven times as much;

    He will give up all the valuables of his house. all the valuables of his house he will give.

    32 Anyone committing adultery with a woman is lacking good sense;

    32 Anyone committing adultery with a woman is in want of heart;

    The one who does so brings ruin on himself. he that does it is bringing his own soul to ruin.

    33 He will get only wounds and dishonor,

    33 A plague and dishonor he will find,

    And his disgrace will not be wiped away. and his reproach itself will not be wiped out.

    34 For jealousy makes a husband furious;

    34 For the rage of an able-bodied man is jealousy,

    He will show no compassion when he takes revenge. and he will not show compassion in the day of vengeance.

    35 He will accept no compensation;

    35 He will have no consideration for any sort of ransom,

    He will not be appeased, no matter how large you make the gift. neither will he show willingness, no matter how large you make the present.

    7 My son, keep my sayings, 7 My son, keep my sayings,

    And treasure up my commandments. and may you treasure up my own commandments with you.

    2 Keep my commandments and live;

    2 Keep my commandments and continue living,

    Guard my instruction like the pupil of your eye. and my law like the pupil of your eyes.

    3 Tie them around your fingers;

    3 Tie them upon your fingers,

    Write them on the tablet of your heart. and write them upon the tablet of your heart.

    4 Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,”

    4 Say to wisdom: “You are my sister”;

    And call understanding “my relative,” and may you call understanding itself “Kinswoman,”

    5 To guard you against the wayward woman,

    5 to guard you against the woman stranger,

    Against the immoral woman and her smooth words. against the foreigner who has made her own sayings smooth.

    6 From the window of my house,

    6 For at the window of my house,

    Through my lattice, I looked down, through my lattice I looked down,

    7 And as I observed the naive ones,

    7 that I might peer upon the inexperienced ones.

    I discerned among the youths a young man lacking good sense. I was interested in discerning among the sons a young man in want of heart,

    8 He passed along the street near her corner,

    8 passing along on the street near her corner,

    And he marched in the direction of her house and in the way to her house he marches,

  • 9 In the twilight, in the evening,

    9 in the twilight, in the evening of the day,

    At the approach of night and darkness. at the approach of the night and the gloom.

    10 Then I saw a woman meet him,

    10 And, look! there was a woman to meet him,

    Dressed like a prostitute, with a cunning heart. with the garment of a prostitute and cunning of heart.

    11 She is loud and defiant.

    11 She is boisterous and stubborn.

    She never stays at home. In her house her feet do not keep residing.

    12 One moment she is outside, next she is in the public squares,

    12 Now she is outdoors, now she is in the public squares,

    She lurks near every corner. and near every corner she lies in wait.

    13 She grabs hold of him and gives him a kiss;

    13 And she has grabbed hold of him and given him a kiss.

    With a bold face, she says to him: She has put on a bold face, and she begins to say to him:

    14 “I had to offer communion sacrifices.

    14 “Communion sacrifices were incumbent upon me.

    Today I paid my vows. Today I have paid my vows.

    15 That is why I came out to meet you,

    15 That is why I have come out to meet you,

    To look for you, and I found you! to look for your face, that I may find you.

    16 I have spread fine covers upon my bed,

    16 With coverlets I have bedecked my divan,

    Colorful linen from Egypt. with many-colored things, linen of Egypt.

    17 I have sprinkled my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.

    17 I have besprinkled my bed with myrrh, aloes and cinnamon.

    18 Come, let us drink our fill of love until the morning;

    18 Do come, let us drink our fill of love until the morning;

    Let us enjoy passionate love together, do let us enjoy each other with love expressions.

    19 For my husband is not at home;

    19 For the husband is not in his house;

    He has gone on a distant journey. he has gone traveling on a way of some distance.

    20 He took a bag of money with him,

    20 A bag of money he has taken in his hand.

    And he will not return until the day of the full moon.” On the day of the full moon he will come to his house.”

    21 She misleads him with great persuasiveness.

    21 She has misled him by the abundance of her persuasiveness.

    She seduces him with smooth speech. By the smoothness of her lips she seduces him.

    22 Suddenly he goes after her, like a bull to the slaughter,

    22 All of a sudden he is going after her,

    Like a fool to be punished in the stocks, like a bull that comes even to the slaughter,

    23 Until an arrow pierces his liver; and just as if fettered for the discipline of a foolish man,

    Like a bird rushing into a trap,23

    until an arrow cleaves open his liver, just as a bird hastens into the trap,

    he does not know that it will cost him his life. and he has not known that it involves his very soul.

    24 And now, my sons, listen to me;

    24 And now, O sons, listen to me

    Pay attention to the words I speak. and pay attention to the sayings of my mouth.

    25 Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways.

    25 May your heart not turn aside to her ways.

    Do not stray onto her paths, Do not wander into her roadways.

    26 For she has caused many to fall down slain,

    26 For many are the ones she has caused to fall down slain,

    And those she has killed are numerous. and all those being killed by her are numerous.

    27 Her house leads to the Grave;

    27 The ways to Sheʹol her house is;

    It goes down to the inner chambers of death. they are descending to the interior rooms of death.

    8 Is not wisdom calling out? 8 Does not wisdom keep calling out,

    Is not discernment raising its voice? and discernment keep giving forth its voice?

  • 2 On the heights along the road,

    2 On top of the heights, by the way,

    It takes its position at the crossroads. at the crossing of the roadways it has stationed itself.

    3 Next to the gates leading into the city,

    3 At the side of the gates, at the mouth of the town,

    At the entrances of the doorways, at the going in of the entrances

    It keeps crying out loudly: it keeps crying loudly:

    4 “To you, O people, I am calling;

    4 “To YOU, O men, I am calling,

    6 Listen, for what I say is important,

    6 Listen, for it is about the foremost things that I speak,

    My lips speak what is right; and the opening of my lips is about uprightness.

    7 For my mouth softly utters truth,

    7 For my palate in low tones utters truth itself;

    And my lips detest what is wicked. and wickedness is something detestable to my lips.

    8 All the sayings of my mouth are righteous.

    8 All the sayings of my mouth are in righteousness.

    None of them are twisted or crooked. Among them there is nothing twisted or crooked.

    9 They are all straightforward to the discerning

    9 All of them are straight to the discerning one,

    And right to those who have found knowledge. and upright to the ones finding knowledge.

    10 Take my discipline instead of silver,

    10 TAKE my discipline and not silver,

    From the start, from times earlier than the earth. from times earlier than the earth.

    24 When there were no deep waters, I was brought forth,

    24 When there were no watery deeps I was brought forth as with labor pains,

    When there were no springs overflowing with water. when there were no springs heavily charged with water.

    25 Before the mountains were set in place,

    28 When he established the clouds above,

    3 It has sent out its female servants

    3 It has sent forth its lady attendants,

    4 “Whoever is inexperienced, let him come in here.”

    4 “Whoever is inexperienced, let him turn aside here.
