SPOKANE’S HISTORIC SEASON
The Spokane Indians 1970 Champion-
ship team will always be known as one of
the greatest teams in minor league baseball
history. However, it was an arduous road to
success.
In 1956, the Spokane Indians were in
trouble. Failure to pay off debts and the con-
dition of Ferris Field left Spokane without a
team in 1957. That was also the same sea-
son the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Gi-
ants announced that they would make the
move to the other side of the country to
Los Angeles and San Francisco, respectively.
This move caused a shake up in the Pacific
Coast League. The Angels, L.A.’s PCL team
for more than half a century, became the
property of the Dodgers. The team needed
to move, and Spokane came calling.
In November of 1957, Dodgers executive
Dick Walsh sat down in the Spokane Club
with a committee of Spokane business-
men and discussed why Spokane deserved
a team. Then County Commissioner W.O.
“Bill” Allen, the leader of the group, devel-
oped plans to update Ferris Field and get
the Triple-A team in Spokane.
The Dodgers said yes on December
2, 1957, and three days later, the city of
Spokane and Spokane County announced
that they would build a new ballpark, which
sealed the deal with the Dodgers.
On January 9, 1958, construction began
on Spokane’s greatest ballpark. Less than
four months later, the Indians began their
journey in Triple A baseball, in what is now
Avista Stadium.
The team had success early on, playing
for the PCL title four times, but only coming
home with the trophy once.
In 1968, Manager Roy Hartsfield left Spo-

kane, opening the door for Tommy Lasorda,
a former Dodgers player that led the Ogden
Dodgers to three consecutive Pioneer
League Championships.
Lasorda’s first season was up and down,
as the Indians finished in second place with
a record of 71-73. Lasorda had the talent,
with 20 future major leaguers on the roster,
but the final record didn’t reflect the senti-
ment.
When the start of the 1970 season
came, the roster looked drastically differ-
ent. The Dodgers promoted many players to
the majors, and Lasorda had a new set of
faces, with only 12 returners from the 1969
team. This new roster consisted of some
top prospects in the Dodgers organization
including Charlie Hough, Tom Hutton, Bob
O’ Brien and a hard-hitting third baseman
named Steve Garvey.
Some prospects that were too young
for the PCL in 1969 blossomed into out-
standing players in 1970. Shortstop Bobby
Valentine, the top prospect in the Dodgers
organization in 1970, had been known as
an error machine, committing 93 in two
seasons with Spokane. However in 1970 he
was able to fix the problem and won the
1970 PCL MVP Award.
Garvey joined the team a third of the
way into the season and had an immediate
impact, hitting .319 with 15 home runs in
just 95 games.
Pitcher Charlie Hough, who was just
beginning to master his signature knuckle
ball, had an amazing year. Coming out of
Avista Stadium was built in 1958 in under four months.

the bullpen for the season, he totaled 12
wins, and 18 saves with a 1.95 ERA.
The 1970 team also boasted left-handed
hitting outfielder Bill Buckner. He hit .335
with 74 RBI during the regular season, a
strong mark that helped him move up to
the Major Leagues in 1971.
Spokane needed no help winning the
1970 Northern Division, winning by a whop-
ping 26 games. Garvey once was quoted
saying that they could lose nine out of 10
and still gain a half-game lead in the league.
The team won the 1970 championship eas-
ily as well, out-scoring the Hawaiian Island-
ers 36-9 in the 4-0 sweep.
The 1970 Spokane Indians were des-
tined for greatness. In total, the players
would go on to account for 23 World Series
appearances, 21 All-Star selections, and
one National League Most Valuable Player -
Garvey’s in 1974.

Good luck to the

ALL-STAR JERSEY AUCTION

Take Home a Piece of Baseball HistoryThe exclusive edition Salish All-Star jerseys, for both the Northwest and Pioneer Base-
ball Leagues, are available in a live auction on the first-base side of the outer concourse.
After the game, the jerseys will be put online to continue bidding on SpokaneIndians.com.
To learn more about the history of the Salish language, continue reading on the next page.
SALISH INFLUENCE
Blazoned across the Northwest and
Pioneer Baseball League jerseys is an
unfamiliar language to the majority of
the world. The words “Sulexw” and “Sics
Sqelixw,” mean Northwest and Pioneer,
respectively, in the Salish language.
Salish is the native tongue of the
Spokane Tribe of Indians, who are
the namesake of the Spokane
Indians Baseball Club. The language
on the All-Star jerseys is an extension
of a rare partnership built upon respect be-
tween two groups of people, that have been
in existence for more than 100 years.
In 2006, the groups made history by col-
laborating on a re-branding of the baseball
team’s logo by becoming the first pairing
of two such parties to respectfully agree on
the use of local native imagery. The primary
logo has a nostalgic feel and features two
eagle feathers, one of the most revered
symbols in Spokane Tribal culture. An alter-
nate logo was also unveiled with the words
“Spokane Indians Baseball Club” written in
Salish. This logo has been stitched on the
team’s sleeves since its inception.
“We welcomed the opportunity
to collaborate with our namesake
professional baseball team on this
project,” said Rudy Peone, former
Chairman of the Spokane Tribe. “We
view this collaboration as a significant op-
portunity to educate thousands of baseball
fans about the language and culture of the

Spokane Tribe of Indians – the city’s first
inhabitants.”
In 2013, the two announced a new home
alternate uniform for the 2014 season – a
uniform that uses the Salish logo as well as
the name Spokane in the native language.
The language is featured as Spokane in
lettering across the front chest: “Sp’q’n’i?.”
Beginning in the 2015 season, the jersey
was named the team’s primary for all 38
home games at Avista Stadium.
“We’re extremely proud of our close
relationship with the Tribe, and these new
uniforms will help foster that even further”
said Otto Klein, the Spokane Indians Senior
Vice President. “We appreciate the tribe
allowing us to be a vehicle to promote their
language and culture.”
Today, the Salish language is spoken flu-
ently by less than 10 people. The Spokane
Indians Baseball Club’s unique identity and
team influence is just one piece of the
effort put forth by the Tribe and team to
raise awareness of the language across the
Inland Northwest and beyond.

Nobody knows bones... And kids... like Shriners.
It takes time for most players to find
their footing in Minor League Baseball, but
for the Spokane Indians’ All-Star, LeDarious
Clark, all it took was being drafted in the
12th round of the 2015 MLB First-Year Player
Draft.
Clark, selected to start the All-Star Game
in the outfield, began his career by reaching
base in his first 19 games, and collecting
a hit in all but his rookie debut. When se-
lected as an All-Star, he led the Northwest
League in multiple major offensive statis-
tics, with eight homers and 34 runs scored
in 34 games. The 21-year-old outfielder was
batting .347 with 20 RBIs and 16 stolen
bases as of his selection.
“I wasn’t waiting for (the All-Star selec-
tion) to just happen,” said Clark with a
grin. “I kept going out to the field, grinding
every day, trying to help my team wher-
ever needed. But I won’t lie, it was a good

college. The right-handed hitter
finished his junior year batting
.329 with a .429 OBP, .575 slugging
percentage, eight home runs, 39
RBI and 21 stolen bases.
“I’m looking forward to playing
against other players from differ-
ent Major League organizations,”
said Clark. “It’s a great feeling to
be on the field with these guys
and represent Spokane and the
Northwest League.”
HONORARY MANAGERS
Salutes the 2015 All-Stars.
Congratulations!
The Spokane Indians
are proud to welcome two
honorary managers to Avista
Stadium for today’s fes-
tivities. George Brett will
be the honorary manager
for the Pioneer Baseball League, and Mike
Redmond will be the honorary manager for
the Northwest League.
A 13-time MLB All-Star, Brett spent his
entire 21-year Major League career with
the Kansas City Royals. The former MVP
and World Series Champion was inducted
into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999 after
hitting .305 for his career. Prior to making
it to The Show, Brett got his start with the
Billings Mustangs of the Pio-
neer Baseball League during
the 1971 season.
Mike Redmond spent
13 seasons in the Major
Leagues, seven of those
with the Miami Marlins, including the 2003
campaign in which he helped the Marlins
win the World Series. In 2012, Redmond
was named the manager of his former big
league squad. Before becoming a profes-
sional baseball player, Redmond went to
Gonzaga Preparatory School in Spokane,
and attended Gonzaga University to play
baseball. As a Bulldog, he was named first
team all Pac-10 in 1991 and 1992.

RULESThe principles for solving these
9x9 puzzles are the same as
those for traditional sudoku, ex-
cept that in baseball sudoku, the
numbers 1 to 9 are replaced by
the starting positions on a base-
ball lineup: P, C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, LF,
CF and RF.
And as in classic sudoku, there
is only one basic rule to remem-
ber: Each horizontal row, verti-
cal column and 3x3 grid must
contain every baseball position
without repeating.
