    10th DCA Annual Congress

    Focussing on Quality Assurance

Arthur Graf zu Eulenburg, Chief Editor of bi-UmweltBau, reports from Münster:

The presentation of the guidelines for QualityAssurance in HDD was one of the highlights of 10thDCA’s annual congress in Münster, germany inOctober. This congress, annually held at varying places, is areal event for the whole field of industry and obviouslydid not weaken in its attractiveness.

The DCA could welcome about 120 participantscoming from drilling companies, the supply industry, engineering offices and - gratifyingly – some clients aswell.

    Congress room at Hotel Mövenpick

This positive response originated not only from thecharming venue, but was primarily owed to aninteresting programme and the congress’s status asvaluable meeting point where information can beexchanged and contacts can be established.

A steadily improved quality and the reliability of theHDD method were in the focus of the congress.President Gerard P. Hoogveld of LMR Drillingemphasised in his welcome that quality assurancewhen HDD measures are performed only makessense, when all those involved in a performance reacha predefined quality level in their area of responsibility. This is not only true for drilling companies, but also forclients, planners and all other companies involved inthe construction.

    Motivated discussions...

    Introducing New Guidelines

During the past two years, a DCA task group wasintensively preoccupied with the issue of qualityassurance. DCA’s vice-president Freek Noorman ofVisser and Smit Hanab b.v. and Norbert Landesbergerof TAU Ingenieurgesellschaft, Berlin presented theresult of the work in Münster, a guidelines to improvethe quality in HDD.

    Norbert Landesberger presenting the newguidelines...

The work, available in English under the title QualityAssurance - Guidelines for better Quality, will soon bepublished in German, as well. It is meant ascompletion of the already existing Technical Guidelinesof the DCA. The English version can be ordered atDCA’s office in Aachen, germany.

Given the fact that the participants in Münster showedbig interest in the presented guidelines, the need toobtain information in this respect is obviously urgent, and DCA’s task group delivered a work of ambition andhigh quality.

    Workshops with a positive response

Once again the organisers noted a big success of theworkshops offered. This form to treat certain currentissues in small groups, and rather in discussionsinstead of lectures, meanwhile became a steady partof the first day of DCA’s annual congresses. This yearthe workshops dealt with the following issues:

Workshop 1: Breakouts – Origination andavoidance

Workshop 2: Contracts for projectsWorkshop 3: Recycling! Differences in machines

for different soil applicationsWorkshop 4: Steering procedures

    Workshop 1: “ Breakouts - Origination andavoidance“

Guidance: Mr Herrmann and Mr Lübbers

The fact that all four workshops had a similar numberof participants without any intervention on behalf of theorganisers shows clearly how balanced the choice oftopics was.

With reference to the lectures, the congress relied onthe well-established concept from the years before. The first day focussed on inter-disciplinary issues, likecontract laws, alternative concepts to solve conflicts bymediation, or new and spectacular developments inconstruction and operation of offshore drilling rigs, while the second day concentrated on current andunusual HDD projects, like the crossing of the river

Elbe in germany on a distance of 2626 m (worldrecord!!) and other lectures close to the practice.

Mr Fengler, LMR Drilling GmbHpresenting the Elbe project

    Sponsorship Award continued

Member of the board and responsible for education inHDD Hermann Lübbers of Nacap b.v. informed theparticipants in Münster that the DCA managed topursue the Sponsorship Award of 2004. The project iscarried through at the TU Clausthal and has the title“Further research in the optimisation of pipe installationby using horizontal directional drilling (HDD)technology with special interest in the reduction intopractice“.. The pipeline to be pulled-in is put underadditional vibrations. The findings were reallyastonishing, therefore DCA’s board decided to extendthe research and to investigate a practical application.

But since this would go beyond the scope of DCA’sSponsorship Award, the DCA successfully tried to winover some sponsors who will considerably support thisresearch project.

Therefore E.ON Ruhrgas and RWE, together with theDCA, founded the ARGE HDD-Förderkreis (team HDDsponsoring). A respective cooperation contract wasagreed upon with the Chair of Opencast Mining andInternational Mining at the TU Clausthal. The goal is to present the results of this researchproject at DCA’s annual congress in 2006.

When and where this congress will be held next yearhas not been fixed yet. As soon as the venue will bedecided upon we will inform you.

You can find more information about the SponsorshipAward in the following pages of this newsletter.

    HDD-Workshops were of great interest

The workshops presented in the past two years for the first time were of great interest and found general

    acceptance in Münster.

    Following topics were discussed:

Workshop 1: Breakouts – Origination and avoidanceGuidance: Gerd Herrmann

    Hermann Lübbers, NACAP

The whole subject area was divided into several categories as “characteristic values of the soil”, “characteristic

values of the drilling fluid” and the “drilling process itself” and came up for discussion in form of a presentation.

Furthermore several attempts for the calculation of the drilling fluid pressure were introduced and discussed.

Consequential damage like subsidences of Breakouts were of great interest. Suggestions made by the participants

had among other things the introduced methods of calculation as subject. Several participants had the desire to get

a set of simplified methods for the identification of a Breakout.

Further on one can state that the “soil investigation report ” (if available) should contain information on acceptable

mud pressure and possibly endangered areas above the drilling line. The potential solution for the confinement of

burst through the use of gypsum was seen as not helpful for succeeding. The high number of about 28 participants

approved the interest in this subject. Apart from the fact that there was no “round table” available for discussion

there were no complaints but satisfied participants.

Workshop 2: Contracts for projectsGuidance: Freek Noorman, Visser and Smit Hanab b.v

Gerard P. Hoogveld, LMR Drilling b.v.

In workshop No. 2 possible differences in perception of the client and the contractor of what is agreed in contracts

were discussed. Again it appeared, that soil is one of the most important grounds for problems between the client

and the contractor. Discussed was how these problems could be solved and what more important is, how these

problems can be prevented. In the end it was concluded, that the DCA would prepare a matrix in which technical

(production) parameters such as drilling speed, bentonite use etc. under several circumstances will be given. This

matrix will be available for parties (incl. Clients) interested. The idea is to give the client tools to understand the

problems and to give him ideas over how a drilling can be executed. In the second part of the workshop the

problems on insuring HDD projects were discussed. As this is a very difficult subject no conclusions could be

made, but it was agreed, that this subject will be investigated further and of coarse if anything worthwhile comes

out it will be forwarded to interested parties.

Workshop 3: Recycling! Differences in machines in different soil applicationsGuidance: Jürgen Muhl, Derrick GmbH

Dipl.-Ing. Alfred Weinmann, Cetco Europe Limited

The aim of this workshop was the optimal selaction and dimensioning of devices to recycle drilling fluid. In doing so

the geology and the necessary parameter of drilling fluids were considered. The characteristics of drilling fluid

influence the efficiency of the recycling strongly. In practice the data of flow rate, pump capacity and cutpoint are

often based on aqueous suspensions but not on the highly viscous suspensions commonly used in HDD business.

In this workshop the construction and modules of the regeneration as well as the composition of a drilling fluid were

discussed and selected by the means of case study. Procedures were presented together with the participants to

trim the drilling fluid to a recycling friendly performance and thereby to improve the efficiency of the aggregates.

This occured in consideration of the suspension capacity in order to assure anytime the bore hole stability

condition. Recapitulation, it can be said that it has been developed a good concept for the case study together with

    the participants.

Workshop 4: Steering proceduresGuidance: Dipl.-Ing. Wolfgang Kuhn

The aim of this workshop was knowledge sharing, where participants exchanged information and experiences of

the various systems currently in use. The introduction began with a thorough explanation of the gyro-system, its

range of applications, and development status. In small workgroups the discussion topics were sharing

experiences, potential areas of improvement and requirements, which were then followed by a summary.

Additional to the requirement that steering systems become more reliable and accurate, it was also established that

unrealistic demands may lead to problems between client and contractor during drilling process.

At this point the focus went to summarising the various steering methods by comparing accuracy, tolerances and

applications. This summary could form the basis for project planning for clients, engineering consultants and drilling

contractors, which could be revised and ultimately incorporated into the DCA’s technical guidelines.

The DCA is searching for interesting topics for the year 2006 to be discussed in the workshops during the annual

congress. Please send suggestions directly to the office!

    Ladies on Tour

    This year’s 10th

Annual Congress of the DCA inMünster was well received again like in the pastyears.

    The three-day-event from October 12th to 14

    th, 2005

set off on Wednesday afternoon in splendidsunshine and pleasant temperature with a tour of thecity conducted by two proficient tourist guides fromthe tourist office Münster. Having the picturesque AaLake with all its sailing boats in view, the groupdiscovered the city on foot, passing along the castleand the main university building towards the old partof town. A tour of the cathedral was as obligatory asthose of the St. Lamprecht’s Church, the DrostePalace or the Church of St. Clemens, buildings thatare especially worth visiting for their historicimportance. This tour of the city ended with a visit tothe City Hall of Münster on the Principal Market. ItsHall of Peace where the Westphalian Peace Treatywas signed in 1648 hosted a reception by the city’sdeputy mayor. Several glasses could be emptied inthis social gathering.

Münster – Most worth living town!!

    On Thursday, October 13th, 2005, DCA’s Ladies’

Tour took place. The ladies followed the paths ofepochs long bygone and visited Nordkirchen Palace,Vischering Castle and Hülshoff Castle in beautifulMünsterland. Under a blue sky and in splendidsunshine, the baroque Nordkirchen Palace, alsocalled Münsterland’s Versailles, was a particularfeast for the eyes. The group visited the castle’schapel and the living quarters of the current owner.

“ladies on tour” in the “Versailles of theMünsterland” (castle Nordkirchen)

A walk through the magnificent park groundsrounded the stay off. Then Vischering Castle nearLüdinghausen invited the group to have a look at thequadrangle of one of the best preserved medievalfortresses of Northern Europe. After a refreshment ina typical Münsterland inn, the tour of Hülshoff Castlein Havixbeck was planned. The cosy quadrangle firstinvited everyone to have a cup of coffee, before thegroup had a closer look at the rooms of the castle, which was the birthplace of the poetess Annette vonDroste-Hülshoff.The day ended for all DCA participants with acommon dinner at Mühlenhofmuseum, an open-airmuseum on the shores of Aa Lake. The reception bythe Kiepenkerl was followed by a tour of themuseum that was atmospherically illuminated. Thevillage school in particular reminded of former times, embroidered by some stories the Kiepenkerl told. Asnack was offered in the impressive atmosphere atthe smokehouse (minced pork and Schnapps). Andduring the dinner at the museum’s Gräftenhof (asquare surrounded by water), typical Westphaliantreats were accompanied by several glasses of beerin a lively mood (remark by the editors: It farexceeded our calculation!!).

    „DCA members in school“

On Friday, October 14, 2005, and thus the last dayof this year’s DCA annual congress, the ladies’programme offered a shopping tour downtown. ByLeeze, as they call a bicycle in Münster, or on footthey started for Münster’s centre with its numerousboutiques and shops. Integrated into the historiccore of the city with the beautiful arcades of themedieval Principal Market, elegant designer andantique shops, jewelleries, gift shops and manymore are lined up. Many street cafés invite visitors tostay a while. All in all we can state that at least for allparticipantes Münster was a city worth a trip

    Golftournament 2005

President Gerard P. Hoogveld reports on a „GolfTournament of a special kind“ after the officialending of the annual congress in Münster.

Last year (2004) in Antwerp, many participants andnew young golfers joined the DCA golf tournament. This year only seven competitors started for thehighest DCA-golf honour.

    Flight 1:Ray Clayton,Champion 2004 inAntwerpenGerd PaulischFlight 2:Freek NoormanGerard HoogveldFlight 3:Marga Noorman,Champion 2003 inAachen.Hans RingersCurtis Allen

Selecting the right golf course was not easy. Theclosest and easiest to find club is Golf ClubWilkinghege. In the direction of the Münster Northentrance to the motorway. This club however, wasrebuilding its eighteen holes, only nine holes wouldbe available and consequently it was expected to berather busy. Thus we came to another, more difficultto find club: GC Münster-Tinnen.Before the undersigned found the location of thisclub he had missed it already twice. It is near theMünster Süd

    Golfclub Münster-Tinnen

“Autobahn Kreuz” and in the South West area of thismotorway crossing. Knowing this, it was still difficult, however well prepared, and test driving it onWednesday morning, and test driving by MrPaulisch, we all managed to arrive at the club wellbefore our starting time of 13.30 hrs.

What a beautiful weather, and what a beautiful golfcourse! This then immediate resulted in a remark ofone of our participants: This is one of the bestcongresses I have ever been to!Yes, this makes a fantastic end to a three daysperiod.

For the Americans, clubs could be hired; even abuggy could be brought in time, as this wasespecially order which was taken care of by one ofus.

On the internet the club looked like everywherewater, difficult to play. This was to scare you off! Yessome water hazards are there, but not much moredifficult than other clubs (in Holland). The game formwas individual, stableford counting, and as it wasfound that the champion of 2004 needed goodcompetition it was decided that the lowesthandicapper from Europe, Paulisch, would play inhis flight.

And yes, taking into account the full handicaps ofeach player, it was Paulisch who did win! Howeverkeep in mind that Ray Clayton plays from handicap7? This means he definitely is the best player, nowplaying with hired women clubs. And still, he did verywell. Paulisch went home after some pleasantrefreshments at the terrace of the Golf club, theothers went back to the hotel for a very nice lastdinner all together which was sponsored by ouroverseas (-ocean) guests! Thank you!

Next morning, the congress was also over for us,and everyone went its way after the Mövenpickbreakfast!

DCA – Sponsorship Award 2005/2006 ARGE HDD – Förderkreis

After the submission and the presentation of the Sponsorship Award 2004 which is entitled „Research in the

optimisation of pipe installation by using horizontal directional drilling (HDD) technology“ by Dipl. Ing. Stefan

Rossbach of the „University of Technology Clausthal Zellerfeld“ the management made the suggestion during the

annual congress 2004 to follow up this matter further on. The results of the work presented by Mr. Rossbach gave

reason to interrogate the member’s meeting for a vote. The application was allowed without a dissenting vote.

The optimisation which means primarily the reduction of the needed tractive forces during the pipe installation was

demonstrated impressively during the tests. A correlation between the specific test parameters could not be shown

during this work. To achieve this goal a detailed analysis of the different parameters has to be made. After several

intensive dialogues between Prof. Dr.- Ing. Tudeshki, Dipl.-Ing. Stefan Rossbach and Mr. Hermann Lübbers of

DCA the following topic with requirement specifications was prepared:

In the second project phase, following questions will be investigated:

    1. What kind of vibration-energy or rather –intensity is necessary for an in-situ use?

    2. What kind of affects will the initiation of vibrations have on different pipe diameters and with increasing

    length of traction?

    3. How does the initiation of vibrations affect on the materials characteristic of a pipe? Do vibrations

affect on the materials strength of a pipe string?

    4. What does the initiation of vibrations to a pipe provoke in the surrounding rock or rather soil?

    5. At which position in the pipe the vibration unit has to be installed to assure a maximum effectiveness

    of the procedure?

    6. How do vibrations affect the use of drilling mud, for example Bentonit-Water-Suspension?

    7. Looking from a technical and constructive point of view, how can a field-proven vibration unit be

    designed?

The amount of the requirement specifications showed clearly that this work could not be accomplished within a

„normal“ sponsorship award. The estimated budget of 42.000,00 € exceeded by far the limit of the sponsorship

of 5.000,00 €. Therefore Mr. Lübbers suggested to search for adequate sponsors.

„Further research in the optimisation of pipe installation by using horizontaldirectional drilling (HDD) technology with special interest in the

    reduction into practice.“

The other members of the management gave the „go-ahead“ for this plan and after a few weeks of intensive

promotion this goal was achieved. Two powerful supply companies the E.ON Ruhrgas AG on the one hand

and the RWE Westfalen-Weser-Ems Netzservice GmbH on the other joined their forces with the DCA to build

    the consortium „HDD – Förderkreis“.

The representatives of the ARGE HDD-Förderkreis are:

    • Mr. Werner Zirnig, E.ON Ruhrgas AG

    • Mr. Franz-Josef Kissing, E.ON Ruhrgas AG

    • Mr. Andre Graßmann, RWE Westfalen-Weser-Ems Netzservice GmbH

    • Mr. Burkhard Meyer, RWE Westfalen-Weser-Ems Netzservice GmbH

    • Mr. Hermann Lübbers, Drilling Contractors Association (DCA)

After signing a cooperation treaty between „ARGE- HDD – Förderkreis“ and the TU Clausthal work was started

instantly. The first blueprint plannings were generated and the first material orderings were made.

During the first meeting of the consortium on the 9th

of December 2005 the first welded parts could be inspected.

The propulsion unit consisting of an e-motor, transmission and clutch had arrived in the workshop likewise.

Clausthal. „Netter Vibration“ has agreed to provide all necessary vibration units and technical know-how free of

    charge with this research project.

In January/February 2006 the first pulling tests will be carried out with the steel pipes provided by the E.ON-

Ruhrgas AG. Considering today’s point of view the research project will lead to new and promising statements for

the future of HDD. All participants are looking forward to the presentation of the achievements on the next annual

Further information from the association and the members

Numbers of members in the DCA increaseNew Members are coming from different fields

In February 2005 at the annual members meeting the DCA have signed a new membership fee structure. One of

the important issues to change the DCA fee structure was to get more small drilling companies in the future, and

to create a better and fair membership structure in the organisation. Therefore in front of the members meeting

the board asked each regular member about their number of drilling rigs (sum of the pulling force) and each

associated member about the number of their employees. On the base of these information the board prepared a

proposal for the members meeting which was accepted by the members by a big majority.

Now until today the DCA got in total 7 new members form different fields of the HDD-Industry. We have also 2

    45th

Annual Congress of the Distribution Contractors Association („DCA-USA“)Invitation to this congress

At the end of 2004, DCA’s American sister association DCCA was dissolved for financial difficulties among others. Therefore the merging with the Distribution Contractors Association („DCA-USA“) they strived for could notbecome a reality.

By the end of November the DCA received a letter by DCCA’s former president Curtis Allen of Baroid IDP, whoparticipated in DCA’s last two annual congresses. He invites the DCA to the 45

    th annual congress of the

Distribution Contractors Association. According to Curtis Allen, the “DCA-USA“ would like to establish similarcontacts to the DCA-Europe as they existed between the DCCA and Europe. This includes the mutualparticipation in annual congresses and an exchange of information.

On principle, DCA’s board favours a re-established contact to the USA. This helps to pick up developments in thefield for the European market and to exchange experiences. For scheduling difficulties – the congress will be heldwhen the members’ meeting takes place in Oldenburg – the DCA will not be able to take part in this year’scongress. The association will try to freshen up the good relations to the USA in the next few years and to comeinto closer contact with “DCA-USA”.

DCA reworked its Technical Guidelines from 2000 (Guideline „Information andRecommendations for the Planning, Construction and Documentation of HDD-Projects)

DCA’s guidelines “Information and Recommendations for Planning, Construction, and Documentation of HDDProjects” will be updated in 2006. For more than 10 years now, DCA’s technical guidelines on “Information andRecommendations for Planning, Construction, and Documentation of HDD Projects”, that were published in asecond edition in 2000, has been serving as the basis when HDD projects are planned or performed all overEurope. During this period more than 2.000 copies of the guidelines, that were published in three languages, weresold to an interested scientific public.

Given the fast technical development in the field of HDD, DCA’s board decided at one of its last meetings torework the existing guidelines and to bring them in line with the current conditions. The concept lays out that asmall task group will first of all check the existing guidelines and make suggestions for a possible revision. DCA’smember of board Hermann Lübbers was able to win over Gerd Herrmann, a long-term employee of the formerTelekom daughter DeteLine for this important first step. Gerd Herrmann and Hermann Lübbers will work outtogether a work programme for the revision in the next weeks.

This work programme will serve as basis to form one or more task groups who will then work out the specialissues. Apart from many other topics, the sectors HDD flushing, recycling etc. need to be completed in theguidelines. At present the board expects to be able to present a reliable work programme for the revision until themembers’ meeting at the latest.

The board would be grateful for any contribution or cooperation for the revision, of course. Please direct yourrespective information to the office.

    Linking with other websites.

DCA was often asked to promote other businesses by means of links to other companies on our websitewww.DCA-Europe.org; but until today this was always turned down. One of our speakers this year asked for thisopportunity again, but from the board’s point of view this can only be possible, if the respective company is amember of the DCA in one form or the other. So for the time being:

If you want a link to your www.company-website.com, then please be so kind to become a DCA member.
