Fell Pony & Dales Pony Sale Fell Ponies sell to 940gns at J36 Rural Auction Centre
North Wets Auctions held the annual show and sale of registered Fell Ponies on Saturday 25th October which saw buyers in attendance from throughout the UK.
The judging was conducted by Mr M Rawlinson who awarded the championship rosette to Greenholme Imogen, a May born brown Filly from Greenholme Stud with Lathomdale Robin, a black May born Colt from MJ Woods.
The top price of 940gns was paid for Dalehead Pete, a 3year old bay Gelding from GT Hodgson followed by Greenholme I’m The Boyo, a brown colt Foal from Geenholme Stuf selling for 800gns.
An entry of Dales Ponies saw yearling fillies sell to 350gns with a 5year old selling at 640gns.

Larger store cattle sold to a slightly easier trade than seen over the previous weeks with many buyer’s sheds becoming full and over flowing. Younger cattle and better quality stores selling to an exceptional trade. Store cattle sold to an impressive top price of £1410 from TE & A Galbraith of Crooklands Farm with a Blonde with Simmental steers from the same home selling to £1360. Heifers sold to a top price of £1260 for an Angus from John Sanderson of Pasture Barn. Yearling cattle sold to a strong demand with quality cattle easy to sell £1080 for a pair of 10 month old Limousin steers from Nether Hall, Kirkby Lonsdale.

Cast Cows and OTM Cattle continue to come forward in large numbers with 105 going through the ring as all classes of cows sold to a sharper trade than last week. Top price of the day came from Ballacutchel Farms selling to 169.5ppk for a Lim Bull. Cast cows sold to a top of 154.5ppk from WK & R Harrison, Brookside with a Limousin. Friesian heifers sold to 144.5ppk from Strickland Hill Farming. Friesian cows sold to 119.5ppk from AT Burrow & Son, High Snab.

An entry of 65 Calves, made up of predominantly black and whites were met by a slightly stickier trade than previous weeks. Buyers looking for the stronger month old and over Friesian calves. Topping trade was John Drinkall at £128, with best sorts £88-£120, younger calves £50-£70. Continental calves sold to £375 from Mason and Steven France, Newhouse Farm. Charolais sold to £265 for bulls and £240 for heifers from RT Halhead.
A nice entry of 15 Stirks made up of mainly blues sold to a flying trade with Andy Shepherd, Pressall topping with a British Blue heifer selling to £565, other Blues sold to £560 for bullocks from AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel. Montbelliarde bull Stirks sold to a top of £430 from WG & RG Riley. B&W Stirks topped at £152 from I Atkinson, Boon Town.

Prime Lambs sold to a brighter trade at Lancaster with a market average of 160ppk. Lambs well fleshed and farm assured sold to a premium. Best sorts of lambs sold over 170ppk and selling to a top price of £79 from Tom Entwistle of Lentworth with Suffolk lambs. Mule lambs sold to a top price of £70.50 from D France of Isle of Skye and averaged 153ppk or £68 for a show made up of mainly heavy weight mules.

Cast Sheep sold to a stronger trade then previous week at Lancaster. Texel ewes sold to a top price of £86 from Richard Morphet of Aughton with other strong continental ewes selling from mid-seventies in to the eighties and smaller sheep in the late sixties. Mule ewes sold to £74 from A & J Rhodes of Low Kit Brow with other pens of strong mule ewes regularly selling into the late sixties. Horned ewes sold to £47 for Swale ewes from WI & A Atkinson of Holme House.

A larger entry of Store Lambs were forward at the weekly sale with a packed ringside of buyers from throughout the Northern counties and Midlands.
Strong, short keep lambs easily sold for over £63 topping at £68 for Texel x from MJ Cleasby, Millom with Suffolks £64 from T Beaty, Troutbeck. Medium keep lambs achieved £63.50 for a pen of 93 Texel x from MW & MR Black with others £57-£62. Hill lambs sold to £53.50 for Cheviots from MB & JE Meredith. Herdwick sold to £50 and a pen of Scotch Blackface wethers from MW Parsley sold at £45 per head.
Mule wethers were forward in strong numbers with best grown sorts generally £56-£60 with mediums £52-£55.
An overall average of £54.33 was achieved with several buyers leaving short for orders.

The weekly sale of Calves at J36 Rural Auction Centre saw the trade for rearing black and whites sharper with best sorts of beef calves a strong trade but younger calves harder to sell this week especially heifers. British Blue bull calves sold to a top trade of £400 for a strong eight week old bull from W & S Airey of West Hall who also sold Blue heifers to £320. British Blue heifers topped at £350 from JW & TE Sharp of Flodder Hall. Native bred calves sold to a strong demand at J36 with more needed to meet buyers demand. Hereford bull calves topped at £300 from R & EA Gardner of Barrowfield. Montbeliarde bull calves continue to meet a strong demand at J36 selling to a top of £260 from JS & I Wilson of Monk Foss with all Montbeliarde bull calves averaging £156. Black and White rearers sold to a stronger demand topping at £88 from R Morris-Eyton of Beck Side with young rearing Black and Whites between £45 and £80.

On Tuesday 28th October, North West Auctions held their weekly sale of Prime sheep
where 3,500 Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep were put before a full compliment of buyers with lambs averaging 162.8p/kg. Handy weights 40-42 kg lambs were the easiest to sell and, being short of buyers’ requirements, these were regularly 175-180p/kg. Heavy lambs were slightly harder to sell on the week.
