About the Organizer

Smart Grid Northwest is a trade associa-tion with a mission to promote, grow and enable the smart grid industry and infrastructure in the Pacific Northwest. Our members, advisors and partners work together to advance the smart grid through education, public policy and planning and implementation.

NORTHWEST DEMAND RESPONSE & ENERGY STORAGE SUMMITThe First Focused Event on DR and Energy Storage in the NorthwestRadical changes in energy sources, distribution and usage are surging through the electrical infrastructure of the Northwest. For example, the Northwest Power and Conservation Council’s Seventh Power Plan has recommended that at least 600 megawatts of DR should be developed to meet the region’s peaking and system adequacy needs. Similarly, utilities, C&I companies and consumers are beginning to deploy energy storage systems (and considering options at scale) that will impact system-wide demand, reliability and efficiency.

To help advance these important trends, Smart Grid Northwest is hosting the Northwest Demand Response & Energy Storage Summit. Join leaders at regional utilities, and those working with them, who are exploring and implementing DR and energy storage options.

Attend the Northwest’s most focused event on two key trends shaping our energy future • Become a sponsor: Make your organization a prominent member of the community and help to craft the Summit content. See page 4 for details.

• Plan to attend: Mark your calendars for Sept 27 and 28 for the NW Demand Response & Storage Summit. Watch smartgridnw.org to find out when and how to register.

Demand response (DR) and energy storage are two interrelated pillars for building a more flexible and resilient electric grid and optimal energy resource mix for the Pacific Northwest. Join us as we chart the way.

“On the market transformation efforts, you bring a coalition of vendors and utilities together to some degree… Advocating for impactful ideas, ways to move the ball forward, that’s what going to be impor-tant for Smart Grid Northwest. We’re proud to be a part of it.” – Rob Pratt, PNNL, about Smart Grid Northwest

Taking the Next Steps for Demand Response in the NorthwestThe Northwest Demand Response & Energy Storage Summit picks up the momentum established at the first Northwest Demand Response Sympo-sium September, 2016. That sold-out event had 165 attendees who gave us overwhelmingly positive response in terms of content, presentation and quality of attendees. Over 200 professionals are expected at this year’s summit, with strong representation from the region’s utilities.

Examining the Progress of DR in our RegionThe agenda for day one of the 2017 NW Demand Response and Storage Summit is being coordinated by experts at the Northwest Power and Conservation Council and Portland General Electric, along with an adviso-ry committee including regional utilities, companies and associated regional leaders. Picking up from the topics of last year’s event (below) the sessions will explore the Northwest’s unique opportunities and challenges for DR, for example: what works in the winter season and what works in summer; behavioral vs automated consumer DR; best approach-es for combining energy efficiency and DR programs; and how DR may (or may not) be part of the wider DER offering.

“A lot of the utilities in the region are going through the same thing: transitioning from demonstrations and pilots and starting to move into real programs. So it’s exciting to see.” – Josh Keeling, PGE, discussing the 2016 NW Demand Response Symposium

Exploring Value Propositions and Best Practices for Energy StorageNorthwest utilities, technology providers and software companies are developing and deploying storage technologies at residential, commer-cial and utility scales to unlock the values of energy storage solutions. At the same time, stakeholders are coordinating with regulatory agencies to update grid processes and tariffs to accommodate storage on the grid, incorporate energy storage into traditional energy planning, and exam-ine electricity rate design.

The NW Demand Response and Storage Summit is the first regional event to bring together all the players that are shaping energy storage in the Pacific Northwest.

Where Energy Storage Fits in the NorthwestDay two of the NW Demand Response and Storage Summit will focus on the range of issues and opportunities for building an energy storage infrastructure and industry in our region.
