ANNUAL CAMPAIGN 2017

As a teenager, Mildred participated in clubs at the JCC. Club meetings preceded a dance or mixer. That is where she met her first husband, Eli who had recently emigrated from Poland. After marrying, they raised two children and started a successful business in Akron.

Reflecting back on those years on Balch Street Mildred notes, ”I met lifelong friends at the JCC. Even though I had very little, everyone treated me well, and there was always something to do. The JCC made my dreams come true.”

Today, the Schultz Campus for Jewish Life continues to be a place for everyone —young and old— to connect with other members of the community. Your contribution to the JCBA’s Annual Campaign keeps our community strong today—as it did many years ago.

Consider Becoming a JFS Volunteer Guardian In collaboration with Jewish Family Service, the Volunteer Guardian Program completed its second year and is positively changing lives in Summit County. Under the direction of Judge Stormer, the Probate Court, in collaboration with the County Executive’s Office, the Department of Public Health, the ADM Board and the Summit DD Board, this program provides trained legal guardians to serve as advocates and surrogate decision-makers for those under the guardianship of Probate Court. Due to the aging population, the demand for court appointed guardians increases every year.

“We are excited that this innovative program is making a positive difference to those in need and to the volunteers that have stepped up,” says Gizelle Jones, executive director of Jewish Family Service.

Since the first training held last July, the program now has almost 80 active volunteers handling one or two cases each. “We limit the amount of cases to only one or two per person,” said J.J. Mesko-Kimmich, director of volunteers. “We want our volunteers to be able to concentrate on their families and continue to enjoy their role as a volunteer guardian. The program and volunteers are making a big impact.”

The goal is to support the volunteer through the process. So the Volunteer Guardian Program provides initial and ongoing training, background checks, and networking.

“We have an amazing group of volunteers, but we still need more to join our team,” says Mesko-Kimmich. “We are always looking for those that have a desire to make a difference in a person’s life.”

To learn more about the Volunteer Guardian Program, contact the JFS Volunteer Guardian Program Director of Volunteers, J.J. Mesko-Kimmich, at 330-867-3388 or [email protected].

More than 300 hundred students from three schools in two nations gathered Oct. 10, for a historic and symbolic walk along the Portage Path, one of the oldest landmarks in Summit County. The walk was part of an event to unveil signage along the path and a mobile app created by the students from The Lippman School, Portage Path Community Learning Center and the Northern Cheyenne Tribe. The app provides information about the trail, including its history, maps, birds and trees found along the path. The marker displays a QR code that directs walkers and cyclists along the path to the app.

The ceremony took place on the traditional Columbus Day holiday, which in some cities is celebrated as “Indigenous Peoples Day” to honor the original inhabitants of the continent before the Europeans arrived. The Northern Cheyenne tribe performed traditional drumming and singing. David Lieberth of Summit County Historical Society was the Master of Ceremonies. Former Mayor Jeff Fusco also spoke.

The Lippman School has had an ongoing relationship with the Northern Cheyenne nation in Montana for six years. Each year, tribal members and students visit Akron. And every other year, students from Lippman travel to Montana.

The app project, which can be accessed at www.walkportagepath.org, was supported by an Educator Initiative Grant from Akron’s GAR Foundation.

citizen in our multicultural society. Please join us in providing this unique educational experience to the students of The Lippman School.

This year, three generous donors have issued a challenge grant of $20,000. This means for every dollar you give, these donors will match it dollar-for-dollar up to $20,000 to make this amazing opportunity affordable for all students.

If you would like to contribute to the match, please call the school at 330-836-0419 to make your donation before Dec. 31 or visit thelippmanschool.org/IsraelMatch to donate online. If you have any questions, please contact Sam Chestnut at The Lippman School.

Part 2 of 2. Last month we explored basic ways our community can better protect itself & how it can best coordinate with first responders. Now, let’s see what options exist for increased government assistance to keep our community safe and our institutions secure.

What keeps Alejandro Mayorkas, formerly the deputy Homeland Security secretary, awake nights is the very “real” possibility of an act of terror or a violent hate crime against the Jewish community.

We’ve seen such concern globally.

Recently, across the world, governments at the national and local levels have stepped up with increased funding and more personnel to defend Jewish communities. In the aftermath of the Charlie Hebdo & Hyper Cacher attacks in France, security forces there deployed for the largest peacetime operation in French history, much of it focused on Jewish schools, synagogues, and community centers.

The View from Abroad France, while home to Europe’s largest Jewish community, is far from alone in these efforts. The British government has committed nearly $18 million in new money to defend Jewish institutions. Belgium and Australia have also given millions to their respective communities.

This year’s Veterans Day program and brunch begins at 9:30 am in Beth El's Mercaz room on the Schultz Campus for Jewish Life. Guest veterans will share their stories about their service to our country.

There is a $10 donation per person requested, and, as always, veterans are free! Babysitting is available with a reservation. Please RSVP by Nov. 8 to Erin Katz at 330-864-2105, x 118 or [email protected].

Jewish Community Security — What’s the Role of Government?HOWIE BEIGELMAN  OHIO JEWISH COMMUNITIES

And, the Czech government signed an agreement in April to better protect Jewish communal sites in Prague.

Physical Security Needs Here at home, in part due to committed advocacy by the Jewish Federations of North America, the Federal government already funds “target hardening” grants for the nonprofit sector. Each year fifty communities ranked most at risk receive funding. After Ohio being entirely left out for several years, last year Cleveland was again on the list, resulting in hundreds of thousands in desperately needed dollars to better secure community institutions. In prior years, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Toledo, were, at various points also eligible.

A key part of a good working relationship with local law enforcement (discussed last month) is ensuring they have the information they need to make the best case to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) of any real threats on the ground.

Because it is so difficult to get many cities ranked into the program, at least one state has taken matters into their own hands. California recently enacted a grant program that mimics the federal program but is open to nonprofits statewide.

In the past, reacting to real time needs, governors in Maryland and New York also directed funds to vulnerable nonprofits.

Watchful EyesNew York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania have all provided funds to private schools, including Jewish ones, to hire either police officers or security guards.

What Else Can be DoneBeyond these two basic areas, governments continue to work with the nonprofit- and faith-based communities, and ours in particular, to meet new threats.

Through Secure Communities Network (SCN), the security umbrella of the Jewish Federations of North America, a new partnership focused on cybersecurity is being developed with DHS.

This, as well as continued— and improved —efforts to share information, to provide training opportunities, and to deploy appropriate smart technologies will also be key in making our community as safe as possible.

Akron’s Jewish Community Relations Committee (JCRC) and Ohio Jewish Communities (OJC) are working hard on each of these issues, at each level of government.

Ohio Jewish Communities is based in Columbus near the statehouse and also partners with JFNA’s Washington office on federal advocacy. OJC is the statewide public affairs, government advocacy, and community relations arm of our eight Jewish Federations, including the Jewish Community Board of Akron. Supported by our Annual Campaign, the Jewish Community Relations Committee of JCBA is chaired by Dr. Marty Belsky.

Planning at Year-EndNo one likes the tax man, but his appearance is as inevitable as cold in Northeast Ohio during winter. There are ways to reduce that tax burden and benefit your favorite charities. The end of the year is an ideal time to do so.

Charitable giving at year-end: Accelerating or increasing charitable contributions at year-end is among the most effective planning strategies to reduce your tax liability and get needed financial support into the hands of your favorite charity sooner. Some year-end points to remember: 1) gifts by check are considered complete this year as long as they are dated and mailed by Dec. 31, even if the charity does not cash the check until January 2017; and 2) pledges and other obligations cannot be deducted unless actually satisfied by Dec. 31.

Minimize capital gains tax: One charitable giving strategy you can use to avoid capital gains tax is to donate appreciated stock to create or add to an endowment fund or a donor-advised fund.

IRA Charitable Rollover Not Yet Extended: Over the past several years, many individuals over 70-1/2 have utilized the IRA charitable rollover to transfer up to $100,000 each year from their retirement accounts directly to public charities. Please consult your tax advisor.

The U.S. government encourages you to contribute to non-profit 501(c)3 organizations with these programs. Help yourself and help the Jewish community by donating.

For more information, please contact [email protected] or 330-835-0005.

This letter is for informational purposes only and should not be construed as legal, tax or financial advice. When considering gift planning strategies, you should always consult with your own legal and tax advisors.

WHY AKRON?The Akron Jewish community has welcomed many families and individuals through its Community Concierge program. In this ongoing section of AJN, we'll get to know new members of our community and why and how they chose to call the Akron Jewish community home.

RACHAEL AZOUZ FOR THE AKRON JEWISH NEWS

After growing up in Akron, David Neumann — son of Michael and Elaine Neumann — has moved back with his wife, Allyson, for general practice dental residency at Summa Health. The duo met during her first day at Ohio State University and have been an item ever since. They got married this past May in Allyson’s hometown, Chicago. Allyson is a school counselor and holds a master’s degree in education.

“It is strange to be back in Akron, but feels great to be where I grew up,” David says, “But one thing hasn’t changed —and that’s how delicious Swenson’s is.”

Aside from indulging in their favorite burger, Allyson and David enjoy hiking on the city’s trails with their cuddly Goldendoodle, Scarlett, who was named after one of their alma mater’s colors. In addition to finding comfort in the outdoors, the Neumanns fit right in the Akron Jewish community. “I had the privilege of growing up with most of the community, and they have known Allyson for a good amount of time —their love and support has helped for an easy seamless transition,” David says.

Growing up in a predominantly Jewish area in Chicago, Allyson has a strong Jewish foundation. “I had the pleasure of being an intern for the Jewish United Fund of Chicago and I was fortunate to help with the annual Chicago Holocaust Luncheon named after my grandmother, Risa K. Lambert,” Allyson says.

As far as living in Akron goes, the couple agrees that it’s a great place to live. “It’s more rural than what I’m used to,” Allyson adds. “But Michael and Elaine [Neumann], and their connection to the community through the Temple and JCC, have shown us that Akron is a wonderful place for young Jewish families.”

Be sure to say “Hello” to David and Allyson next time you see this lovely couple — even if it’s mid-bite of a Swenson’s burger!

Akron's Jewish Community Concierge service is provided by the Jewish Community Board of Akron and is supported by Annual Campaign funds. Cathy Baer serves as Community Concierge and can be contacted at 234-252-0049 or [email protected].

BEYOND THE CHUPPAH

The Mystique of the Jewish WeddingThe bride and groom uniting under the chuppah. The resounding mazel tov at the breaking of the glass. Elated l’chayims and dancing into the night. These are the iconic images that we have come to expect at any Jewish wedding. But beneath all the fanfare and jubilation, there must certainly be a more exiting and deeper meaning.

Have you ever wondered why the bride veils her face and wears a white gown? Did you know it is traditional for the bride and groom to fast on their wedding day?

Join us on Sunday, Dec. 18, at 5:30 p.m., at Anshe Sfard Synagogue for the 19th Annual Gathering of Jewish Mysticism as we evoke the celebratory spirit of a traditional Jewish wedding while uncovering the significance of ancient, holy rituals and unique customs. We will also explore the foundations of marriage as a divine covenant between two people blending not just their lives but their souls.

In addition to enjoying a delicious dinner and joyful dancing, we will relive the memories from weddings of local couples in the Akron community through video and storytelling. We are also looking for your unique contributions to the program booklet featuring stories of weddings and married life.

Whether you are a bride-to-be or have been happily married for years, this festive evening is sure to bring joy and deepen the knowledge of all who attend. You do not need any previous experience or Jewish education to attend and enjoy this event.

NOVEMBER 2016 § 13 Akron Jewish News

In 1948, a group of Jewish American pilots secretly– and at great personal risk– smuggled planes out of the U.S., trained behind the Iron Curtain and flew for Israel in its War of Independence. This ragtag band of brothers not only turned the tide of the war; they also embarked on personal journeys and renewed Jewish pride. We’ll follow the film with a brief discussion.

On Oct. 13 at the Akron Civic Theatre, students from The Lippman School along with the Northern Cheyenne Tribe singers and drummers performed original musical and dance pieces as part of the Creative Works Project under the guidance of artistic director Brian Murphy.

A well-known professional dancer and choreographer in the Akron community, Murphy is co-creator of the Creative Works Project workshops for The Lippman School.

Otto Braided Hair, joined by other tribal drummers and singers, performed traditional songs as Northern Cheyenne students danced in authentic tribal dress. Shay Goldenberg, Akron and Canton’s shaliach, also performed.

The Creative Works Project is designed to introduce students to local area professional dancers and musicians with the purpose of creating original musical pieces followed by a public performance.

The Creative Works Project would not be possible without the support of the Akron School of the Arts Firestone Dance Department, University of Akron Dance Institute, Child’s Guidance Services, Summit Choir Society, Cheyenne Indians, NEOS Dance Theatre and musician Shay Goldenberg. Thank you to our generous private donors for their support.

SHAY GOLDENBERG ISRAELI SHALIACH

“After the holidays” is the time of the year when we have finally “digested” (literally) the fact that the New Year has begun. This November, my shlichim program monthly topic is about the special bond between the American Jewish people and the State of Israel.

Upcoming ProgramsOn Monday, Nov. 7, we’ll watch the great film “Above and Beyond,” directed by Nancy Spielberg. Join me at 6:30 pm on the Schultz Campus for Jewish Life. This film tells the story of a group of Jewish American pilots that answered a call for help. In secret—and at great personal risk—they smuggled planes out of the U.S., trained behind the Iron Curtain in Czechoslovakia, and flew for Israel in its War of Independence in 1948. This is one of the great examples of the endless bond between the Jewish people and the life of the State of Israel.

We will also get together on Tuesday, Nov. 22, at 6:30 pm and hear from Michael Holub from Israel Bonds. We’ll learn about its history, what it does for Israel, and how you can take part in the country’s growth and development as an investor.

More about IsraAIDIsrael is a strong state with strong people that reach out their hands to help and for peace. The organization IsraAID exemplifies this spirit. Mayana was a part of this amazing Israeli-based humanitarian aid organization, which recently helped in Baton Rouge. Here’s more about its work, from IsraAID itself:

"Between August 8–14, Louisiana was pummeled by over 6.9 trillion gallons of rain, in what is being called the “worst [disaster] to hit the United States since Superstorm Sandy” (Red Cross). Dozens of lives were lost, and residents are struggling to recover from the sheer scale and scope of the crisis.

In the aftermath of record flooding that affected over 105,000 families, IsraAID’s disaster relief team deployed to the area to support relief efforts.

Giving Your Soul and Your Heart Latet Et Ha-Neshama Ve-Et Ha-Lev Song title by Boaz Shar’abi

Following coordination with national partners, the 10‐person team arrived in Louisiana to help clean out devastated homes, as well as lay the groundwork for future rehabilitation and reconstruction.

Drawing on 15 years of humanitarian responses in 39 countries, IsraAID was on the ground with longtime partner Team Rubicon, its US‐based disaster response partner. This cleaning stage was crucial to avoid major health and hygiene issues from contaminated water and open sewage, as well as to build a positive momentum of rehabilitation.

Team member Mayana Branigan is an Israeli who had just completed a year of “shlichut” on behalf of the Jewish Agency in the cities of Akron and Canton, Ohio. She remarks: “This has been such a privilege and learning experience for me. I learned about the strength of people to ‘overcome.’ We came into homes and, as a team, we did everything we could, so that the families were able to begin the process of rebuilding their homes. Whether it was removing debris, sorting through belongings or even listening, as we finished our work, we left with such gratitude and friendship.”

Following completion of one of the houses, the homeowner, Mary, wrote to the team, “We had been able to do some of the gutting and cleaning but had

just stalled out. Your crew arrived when we had hit the bottom on energy and the ability to continue. You infused fresh energy, skill and expertise into the cleanup operation and really helped to turn our flooded house back into what can eventually become our repaired and renovated home. And beyond the obvious cleanup, the caring attitude, good humor and kindness displayed by all members of the team made the work day go so quickly. The fact that team members volunteered (even taking vacation time from work) and travelled from so far away to help flood victims here in Baton Rouge is especially noteworthy. We are so appreciative for your help. We can now look forward with hope and optimism towards rebuilding a home for our family.”

IsraAID is an international humanitarian aid organization based in Israel. Since its inception in 2001, its emergency response teams have responded to almost every major humanitarian crisis of the last decade, reaching over 39 countries worldwide, with long-term efforts still ongoing in 19 countries today. IsraAID has been active in the United States since 2005 in the wake of Hurricane Katrina."

For more information on IsraAID and their work, email Talya Feldman at [email protected] or go to www.israaid.org.

Shay performed with dancers from Firestone High School at The Creative Works Project performance at Akron's Civic Theatre on Oct. 13.
