As part of the PAI Food for Progress in Mozambique

50 Community Soy Restaurants have been established to:

Promote Soy to improve the nutritional status of pregnant

women and orphans

Establish an income generating business for women

Encourage local soy production and processing

Achievements

250 Passionates trained by American Soybean Associations WISHH program to operate Restaurants and cook tasty soy meals and produce a variety of soy products

396 orphans receiving free soy meals daily

257 PLWA receiving free soy meals daily

102 pregnant women receiving free soy meals daily

1.2 million meals served since the beginning of the project

50 gardens with 34 rope pumps operated to provide vegetables to ensure a balanced diet

Outcomes measured

WISHH conducted baseline survey and follow-up evaluation of 244 children aged 5-10 years who had attending Soy Restaurant meal program. (one soy meal per day for 5-6 days per week)

Impact over six months:

Weight increased in average + 1.8 kg.

Growth in Height increased with 1.3 cm

Strength measures improved with +2.2 to 3 kg

Decrease in malnutrition-related symptoms:

Diarrhea dropped from 32.3% to 3.3%

Skin sores dropped from 15.2% to 0.4%

Respiratory symptoms dropped from 2.9% to 1.6%

The soy cow production centre located in Nhamatanda

serves as a training ground for soy processing

The soy cow produces a total of 120 liters of soy milk

per day.

Provides service to 480 customers.

Zambia:

2 Vita Goats at the Children’s Town producing peanut butter

and soy milk and soy flour from the ground nuts and soy

nuts purchased from the neighboring farmers

Malawi:

4 Vita Goats processing centers established with the aim to

increase income for small scale farmers

An average of 200 lt. Soy milk produced per day

Serving 200 children daily with ¼ liter of soy milk on their way to school and ¼ liter on their way home

Residues from milk production is used for bread baking and/or production of snacks

The Center promotes soy locally, regionally and internationally
