Nutrient Flows and water
What the city does The business of wastewater
• Sewage treatment insufficient and not all households are connected
• Untreated sewage is killing rivers, though providing nutrients to farmers
Vijaypura- falling groundwater tables
Waste-water from the city
Used productively
Growing vegetables too
Jakkur Wastewater Treatment Plant
Bangalore
Jakkur – 18.9 sq km Catchment. 50 Ha water spread
STP’s need to be linked to reuse
Salient Features
Design Capacity – 10 MLD
Present Average Inflow – 9.5 MLD
Wastewater generation – Yelahanka, Jakkur
Process Adopted – UASB followed by Extended Aeration
Wastewater discharged in to – Wetland of Jakkur Lake
Design Parameters
The plant is designed for the following influent characteristics of wastewater.pH 7.06 – 8.1Total Solids 782-1352 mg/lTotal Suspended solids (TSS) 320-672 mg/lBOD5, 20°C 290-369 mg/lCOD 465-973 mg/lChlorides (as Cl) 74-151 mg/lSulphates (as SO4) 11-41 mg/l
Design Parameters
The plant is designed for the following characteristics of treated water.BOD5 ≤ 20 mg/lSuspended solids ≤ 30 mg/lpH 5.5 – 9Oil & Grease ≤ 10 mg/lResidual Chlorine ≤ 1 mg/lColour & Odour See NoteIron(as Fe) 3 mg/LNitrate Nitrogen 10 mg/LNote: all efforts are to be made to remove colour and odour as far as practicable
