Nutrient Dense Hugelkulture: An Experiment in Land Management at Woody End Farm
Goal:Takeallofthesurplusorganicmaterialsonthefarm,addessentialmissingpiecesandusethemtocreateusefulandproductiveland.Aimforhighproductivityofnutrientdenseandhealthyplantsandanimalswiththeleastamountofmaintenancepossible.Atallorder! TheChallenge:• Mid1700’sfamilyfarmwithverypoorqualityoldpastures–greypodsolclaywithverylow
pH(5.2),andnotmuchofanythingneededtogrowdecentcropsofanykindexceptlowbushblueberries.N,P,K,Ca,Mgbarelyregisteronasoiltest.
• Partsofthelandareverydryandpartsareverywet.Thereareseveraldugwellsanddrainageditchescrossingthroughtheopenfieldsnearthehouseandbarn.

NUTRIENTDENSEHUGELKULTUREBEDS!
Hugelkulture(HK)bedsareversionsofthemidEuropeanconceptofmoundculture–pilingupwoodyplantmaterial,coveringitwithcompost,manureorotherorganicmaterialandplantinginthemiddleofit.Itcouldalsobelookedatasatakeoffontheconceptofnurselogs–buryinglogsnearstressedtreesinordertoprovidebothasourceofnutrientsforbeneficialfungiassociatedwithtreesandwaterforboththefungiandthetreerootsasthelogsdecay.
NutrientDenseFarmingiswayoflookingatfoodproductionthatmaximizesthehealthofthefoodproducedandtherebyincreasesthehealthofwhoevereatsthatfood.Itusesthetenetsoforganic,ecological,biological,bio-dynamic,re-mineralizationandotherkindsoffarming&gardeningtoproducethebestqualityfoodanditdocumentsthatvitalitythroughindependenttestslikebrixreadings–othertestinstrumentscomingsoon.TheHKbedsatWoodyEndFarmstartwiththebasicmoundapproachandaddtheconceptsofnutrientdensitycropgrowingtocreate(wehope!)biologicallyactive,watermanaging,minerallydense,lowmaintenancebeds.We’llusesomedirectinvestmentinmaterials(loam,mineralsetc)aminimuminvestmentinequipment(hireduseofatractorwithafrontendloader)andwiththeendresultofmaximumproductionlevelperdeveloped

outwithlimespread).Layer2: Compost–prettyfresh–workeddeepintotheopenareasbetweenthelogs–
providesthenitrogenforthewood’sdecompositionandalsoaddsthephosphorusandpotassiumfoundinmanure.We’vebeenaddingcalcitelimetothemanureasit’scleanedoutofthebarnorwewouldbeaddingitatthispoint.
Layer3: Morelogs–smallernowandworkedintothegroovesiftheystillexist–alsoworkingtobalancetheheightofthefinalbed
Layer4: Moremanure–mostlycompostedthistime–andwe’lladdthecalcitelimebecauseit’sfromanolderpilethatdidn’tgetthelimeaddedduringremovalfromthebarn.
Layer5: Smallbranchestocompletetheintegrationofwoodthroughthebed.Layer6: Topsoil–fromSterlingpeat–theirpeat/loamblend–atleastsixinchesifwehave enough–4”otherwise.Layer7: Stonedust–fromPandolphPerkins–between1/8”–¼”–tohelpbreakupthe“new loamcrust”thatalwayshappensandtoaddthatrawmineralcomponent.Layer8: Mineralsandmicrobeboosts–alfalfameal,rockphosphate,greensand,azomite blendedtogetheronatarp(wearadustmaskifnecessary)andworkedintotheloam layerwithacultivator.Layer9: Shreddedleavesandgrassclippingsprovidedbyalocallandscaper.Wewon’tdothis today.They’llbedeliveredashecleansdownhissites–addedastheyarrive.

Fallsoildevelopmentmix–usedinopengardensthatarecomingintoproduction,edgesofexistinggardensthatneedrefreshingorothersoilsthatneedtoopenup(compactionetc.)It’sspreadonthesurfaceattherateofabout10-25lbs/100sqftandeitherrototilledinifthebedisopenorhandcultivatedifthebedisalreadyplanted–amountisdeterminedbyseverityofthespecificproblem.Promotesastrongbacterialreactionandfeedsthewormswell–theydevelopheavymuscles(almostblueincolor)thatallowthemtoreallyturnsoil.I’vealsousedthisattherateof50lbs/100sqftwhenthereweresevereissuesinvolved.Thisonlyworksifthebedsareemptyandit’sdoneinthefallsothatthesurgeofheatthat’sgeneratedcandissipatebeforenewmaterialsareadded–excellentforbreakingdown4”ofpaintedwoodchipmulchJ!50lbsLayerMash–non-medicated(chickenfood)50lbsGreensand20lbsAzomite40lbsGypsumLastyearstonedustfromalocalquarrywasaddedtothemixforacoupleofbedswheretoomuchorganicmaterialhadaccumulated–resultsthisyeararespectacular.
Caveat
Neverforgetthatyourbestassetsareyoureyesandothersenses–tweaktheseformulassothattheyworkforyou.ThesewereworkedoutforthecentraluplandareaofMassachusetts–essentiallyWorcesterCounty–andwouldneedconsiderableadjustmentforotherdistinctlydifferentgeographiesandsoiltypes.Usesoiltests,compactiontests,visualandtexturaltestsandanyothersourceofinformationyoucanfindtohelpyouunwindthehistoryandtherealityofanygivensoilsituation.IdowanttomakeclearthatIamnotasoilscientist–orscientistofanykind.Iprovidecomplex,integratedandcolorfulgardensofallkindsforpeoplewholovetobeoutintheirgardensandappreciatethediversitythatisfoundthere.Overthelast20yearsIhavetighteneddowntheformulasthatIuseasthebaselineforallofthegardensImanage.Itisanintensiveprogramanddefinitelynotforeveryone–orevenformostpeople.IhaveheardfrompeoplethatI’vetaughtovertheyearsthatthisprogramworksforthemaswell.Theydon’tapplyitasintensivelyasIdobuttheresultsstillworkbetterthananythingelsethattheyhavetried.Here’stoeveryonegrowinggreat,healthy,beautifulgardens!
