The Carbon Cycle• photosynthesisphotosynthesis -- CO2 is taken up during in the production of

organic matter by green plants, • respirationrespiration –CO2 given off when food is burned and when organic

matter is decomposed.  • As climate warms, green plants mightmight consume more CO2 because

the growing season becomes longer and the plants have more time for photosynthesis;

• or, warmer temperatures might induce bacterial activity and the rates of decay of organic matter, causing an increaseincrease in the CO2 emissions. 

• Chemical, physical or biological origin that emit CO2 to the atmosphere are referred to as carbon sourcessources,

• Those that take up CO2 from the atmosphere are referred to as carbon sinkssinks or losses.
