The Broncos lost to the Seattle Seahawks in a blowout, 43-8, but Knowshon is still a Middletown hero. Knowshon was born July 16, 1987, in Belford N.J. He graduated from Middletown South High school in 2005. When he graduated from high school, he was first in New Jersey in career touchdowns with 128 touchdowns during his high school career. He was second in career rushing with 6,268 yards. His high school coach, Steve Antonucci, told ABC News, “He was the best athlete I’ve ever coached and probably no doubt the best competitor I’ve met.” Knowshon went to the University of Georgia. In his first year of college, he was named redshirt freshmen, which means he didn’t play in games but he practiced with the team. As a redshirt, he still got a scholarship, but got a full year of practice before playing in a Division 1 college game. Division 1 colleges are the most competitive in sports and generally the largest colleges. Once he began playing in college games, he was a great teammate for the Georgia Bulldogs averaging 105.2 rushing yards per game. In 2009,Knowshon was drafted into the NFL in the first round. He was selected twelfth overall when he was picked by the Denver Broncos. In his first year with the Broncos, he played all sixteen regular season games in which he rushed for seven touchdowns and caught two touchdowns. Knowshon continues to improve his game and many fans, including Coach Antonucci, believe playing with Peyton Manning, Denver’s great quarterback, has helped Knowshon’s game. The Broncos loss to the Seahawks was disappointing, but it was exciting to watch a Middletown kid play in football’s most competitive game, the Super Bowl. Do you plan on watching the 2014 Sochi Olympics? Do you think it is a good place to have it?

Yes.

Do you like the Winter or Summer Olympics better and why?

I like the Winter Olympics better because it has more variety. It has events that you don’t see any place else.

What are your favorite events at the Olympics?

My favorite events are downhill skiing, cross country skiing and the biathlon event. My favorite events at the Summer Olympics are gymnastics because of the grace and strength of those athletes and track and field. I like the pole vault, javelin and shot put events, as well.

Have you ever been to the Olympics?

No, I have never been to the Olympics in real life.

If you could participate in one Olympic event what would it be and why?

I would have to say baseball since it’s my favorite team sport and tennis.

I loved learning about the coolest inventions of 2013 in the last issue of TFK (Time for Kids) and TIME magazine. One invention that I thought was really cool was the invisible sky scraper. It will use a combination of LED technology and 18 weather- proof HD cameras to make it invisible. It isn’t really invisible. Technology makes it appear invisible because from certain views it will blend right into the skyline. The 450-m tower will have an entertainment complex. It will also have the world’s 3rd highest observation deck. It will be visible for planes and birds. The building’s design won first prize in a national competition. It will be located outside of Seoul, South Korea. The building will finished in 3-4 years, so be ready to “see” it, if you can.

While reading about the Groundhog's Day, I have learned a lot of things about these creatures that really surprised me and I would like to share them with you.  Until now I had never seen the groundhog that lives in my backyard as an amazing animal. By watching him, I know that when he is around it is breakfast timewhich is around 7.30am. He likes to eat our apples and green grass. So far, he has not eaten our flowers. And, he can run fast like me. I did not know that groundhogs wake up every day at the same time. And, they can run as fast as an average fourth-grader! That explains why I never got to catch him!. They can even climb trees like the squirrels or paddle in the water like a beaver!I also learned that groundhogs can move up to 700 pounds of dirt and rocks in a day. It is like filling a container similar to a donation drop-off box that you see in the parking lots! And, did you know that their burrows can be built as deep as 6 feet below ground (that is like my dad's height!) and t 30 feet long (that's almost the size of a medium school bus!)? Amazing, right?! The burrows also have different levels to keep the water out when it rains and different rooms to be used as a potty, a nest, and for food storage.I knew groundhogs hibernate when it is cold outside, but I just read that their heart beats once every 4-5 minutes and they breathe once every 6 minutes while they are in deep sleep. (Have you tried? This is too long of a time for me!).After hibernating for months, groundhogs wake up just to look for their sweethearts (as if they would celebrate Saint Valentine's Day, too!). Then they go back to sleep in their burrows until March, which is a perfect time to mate and have babies.I am curious to see what Punxsutawney Phil predicts this year. But, I am more curious to see once again the groundhog that lives under our shed. By watching him, I will discover new facts about these amazing creatures.

Kids Opinion:Less HomeworkSamantha S., grade 4I think we should have less homework because it takes too long to do. I usually get 3 or more sheets but each sheet by itself takes a long time. I never get to play with my sister before dinner.

I think we should only have 1 sheet per day. This year I think Nut Swamp School should give everyone a week with one sheet of homework. Less homework might be a good change for Nut Swamp School. I think that less homework would make Nut Swamp history. Less homework might be a great change in our community. I would be able to play with my sister more.

Arts & Leisure: Let’s Dance!Grace M., grade 2

Dance is a beautiful form of art! It is also a great way to exercise, which keeps your body healthy. Different types of dance are ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop and modern. I think everyone should dance because it is so much fun! I go to ADA in Red Bank. ADA

stands for The Academy of Dance Arts. Jennifer Church started the dance school in 1985. I love it at the Academy of Dance Arts because I get to express myself with all different types of movement. I love to learn all different steps. I take 2 ballet classes, a modern class and a pre-pointe class. All the classes are very fun! My favorite class is the pre-pointe class. You have to take two ballet classes to take this class. There are special shoes for pre-pointe. They look exactly like pointe shoes but you do not go up on pointe. The pre-pointe class does a lot of stretches they are all so much fun to do. I have the two best dance teachers in the world. Their names are Miss Sori and Miss Kathryn. Miss Sori does competition with the class. She splits the class into two groups and the winning team gets a gummy worm. It is super fun! Miss Kathryn does animal walks. They are really fun to do too. My little sister Lia takes a class too. She likes it a lot, and I am very proud of her.ADA works with a dance company called The Company of Dance Arts, which is known as CODA. The CODA Company pulls performances together. They have a winter show and a spring show at Count Basie Theater. Every year for the winter show they do The Nutcracker. I have been doing the winter show for the past two years. This is my first year doing the spring show. For the spring show they do different shows, like Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, and more. This year they are doing The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. You have to try out for the shows. When it was my first time auditioning for the Nutcracker, I was a good combination of nervous and excited. In the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, I played a snowflake. The snowflakes come out when Dorothy falls asleep in the big patch of flowers. The school performance for The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is on April 11th, and the public shows are on April 12th and 13th. It would be great if you could come and see the show! You really should come and see all the performances that CODA run. They are really great and inspiring.

Teacher Feature: Miss SarapochilloSamantha N., grade 4I am going to be telling you about the best teacher in the world, Miss Sarapochillo! I got to interview her before school one day and here is what I learned.!Miss Sarapochillo was born in Colts Neck, NJ. Growing up she lived in Colts Neck, with her mom, dad, and brothers, Michael and Mark. She now lives in Belmar. She played almost every sport growing up. She was a cheerleader and a gymnast all her life, from age 4 to 22. Miss Sarapochillo decided to be a teacher because she has always liked children and she really feels like she could help students by being a friend to them and not just their teacher. Her favorite subject to teach is math because she likes when all of a sudden students get that “light bulb” going off in their brains when they get it! She also likes to teach writing because she gets to read all of our stories, and she feels like she’s learning something new about her students. Miss Sarapochillo’s favorite part about being a teacher is that she gets 25 new best friends every year. Her favorite subject as a student was science because of all the experiments. Some things Miss Sarapochillo likes to do for fun now are: yoga, go the gym, visit the boardwalk and beach, babysit, bake cupcakes, relax, and stay active. I am so happy that I have Miss Sarapochillo as my fourth grade teacher!

Here are some of Miss Sarapochillo’s favorites:! Food and drink: Sushi and coffee! Color:! ! Turquoise! Season: !! Summer! Vacation: ! Italy! Electronic: ! Phone or Smart Board! Animal: !! Black Labs and Corgis

Do you plan on watching figure skating at the 2014 Sochi Olympics? I do. Figure skating is my favorite sport and I have been skating since I was 4 years old. I am a member of the Garden State Skating Club.Isn’t it just amazing how the skaters jump and spin through the air? They make it look so easy! But believe me, being a competitive figure skater is not as easy as it looks. Figure skating is a very hard sport and it takes a lot of hard work, practice, and one-hundred and ten percent effort every time you skate. You always have to stay positive, know that you can do it, and most of all believe in yourself. This year we are sending a great team to the Winter Olympics in Sochi: Ashley Wagner, finally making the team after just missing it last season; Gracie Gold, who truly deserves to go after winning US Nationals; and Polina Edmunds, 15 years old, just making the age cutoff. A 15 year- old girl going to the Olympics! Wow! Did you know that there is a new ice rink right here in Middletown? It’s called Middletown Sports Complex and it’s at the Middletown Swim Club. I sometimes skate there. If you want to go skating there you can sign up for group lessons or just go for fun when there is open skate time. Anyone can learn!!We wish the best of luck to all of the figure skaters on the US Olympic team.Go team USA!!!

Love Your Pet Day is celebrated every year on February 20th. It is a day to celebrate your pet. No one knows who created Love Your Pet Day, but it probably was a pet lover. Love Your Pet Day is not a day just for dogs and cats; it is for any animal. It can even be for a spider. Some ways to celebrate with your pet are: you could give your pet a special treat; you can also

clean up their sleeping area or you could even make your pet a special card. So on Thursday, February 20th remember to give your pet some extra love.

Fun Facts: Love Your Pet Day is February 20thTara M., grade 2

The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell by Chris Colfer is about twins, Alex and Conner, who one day accidentally travel into a book of fairytales. However, the fairytales do not end where the originals do. For example, Red Riding Hood is now a queen. But, as much fun as they’re having, Alex and Conner want to go back home. They hear about the wishing spell, which is a spell that grants them any one wish once they have collected a bunch of hard to find magical objects. What the twins don’t know is that the spell can only be used once more, and they’re not the only ones after it.

I liked this book because it was told with great detail; I could picture the characters and places in my head. Also, you can really connect with the characters and feel what they are feeling. I would recommend this book to any reader who likes magic and adventure. If you do like it, there is a sequel. The series is written by Chris Colfer who is not only a writer but an actor from Glee. This book is one of adventure and magic, and it’ll leave you wanting more.
