Training Programme on Remote Sensing & GIS Technology forWatershed Planning & Management

th thThe 3 days training programme organised by PSU from 27 to 29 November, 2015 with the help of Odisha Remote Sensing Application Centre(ORSAC) at Bhubaneswar on application of RS & GIS technology for OTELP Programmes. The day wise proceeding is as follows;

Day:-I The Inauguration ceremony started by Dr. Sandeep Tripathi, IFS, Chief Executive, ORSAC and Sri Srikant Prusty, IAS, Programme Director, OTELP at ORSAC Office, Bhubaneswar

As RS & GIS is concerned RS stands for Remote Sensing & GIS s tands for Geographic Information System. The basic objective of the training was how to implement and monitoring the watershed planning through RS & G I S t e c h n o l o g y . D u e t o advancement in satellite & sensing technology, it is possible to map finer details of the earth surface & provide scope for micro level planning & management. Water r e s o u r c e m a n a g e m e n t b y prioritization of micro watershed based on Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) analysis using Remote sensing data and GIS overlaying techniques. This concept is helpful for increasing the agricultural based livelihood, irrigation facilities and to find the solution of uncontrolled soil loss. A watershed is an ideal unit for management of water for land and water resources for mitigation of the impact of natural disasters for achieving sustainable development.

The significant factor for the planning and development of a watershed are its physiography, drainage, geomorphology, soil, land use/land cover and available water resources. Remote Sensing and GIS are the most proven tools for watershed development, management and also the studies on prioritization of micro-watersheds development and management. Soil loss is the most important factor for water resource management like irrigation and agricultural land erosion. The universal soil loss equation (USLE) has been the most widely accepted and utilized equation for analyzing soil loss caused by erosion from agricultural lands. The universal soil loss equation can be used to estimate the average rate of soil erosion for each feasible alternative combination and crop system and management practice in associated with a specified soil type, rainfall pattern and topography. The USLE equation is used in the to find out micro-watershed priority. This equation based on five factors R, K, LS, C and P. The soil loss is estimated from each micro-watershed by multiplying the maps of (R, K, LS, C and P factors) runoff map, soil erodibility map, slope map and agricultural map. These five numerical factors help to calculate the long time soil losses from micro-watersheds stream bank erosion and stream bed erosion

Odisha Tribal Empowerment and Livehoods Programme ( OTELP) 5

The equation of USLE is:-

A= R * K * LS * C * PWhere A= Avg. annual soil loss, R= Rainfall factor, K=Soil erodibility factor, LS= Slopelength & steepness factor, C= Cropping Factor, C= Conservative practice factor.

Day:-II This session contains purely practical. The main objective of the session was how to create SHP file using Arc map version 10. This is a good tool to use in watershed to find out all the details and upload it in the website. ArcGIS is a geographic information system (GIS) for working with maps and geographic information. It is used for: creating and using maps; compiling geographic data; analyzing mapped information; sharing and discovering geographic information; using maps and geographic information in a range of applications; and managing geographic information in a database.

ArcGIS is built around a geodatabase, which uses an object relational geodatabase approach for storing spatial data. A geodatabase is a "container" for holding datasets, tying together the spatial features with attributes. The geodatabase can a lso conta in topology information, and can model behavior of features, such as road intersections, with rules on how features relate to one another.

W h e n w o r k i n g w i t h

geodatabases, it is important to

understand about feature classes

w h i c h a r e a s e t o f f e a t u r e s ,

represented with points, lines, or

polygons. With shapefiles, each file

can only handle one type of feature. A

geodatabase can store multiple

feature classes or type of features

within one file. Geodatabases in

ArcGIS can be stored in three

geodatabase", or an "ArcSDE

geodatabase.

The file geodatabase stores information in a folder named with a .gdb extension.

Arc GIS for Desktop consists of several integrated applications, including Arc Map, Arc Catalog, ArcToolbox, and Arc Globe.

a. ArcCatalog is the data management application, used to browse datasets and files on one's computer, database, or other sources. In addition to showing what data is available, ArcCatalog also allows users to preview the data on a map. ArcCatalog also provides the ability to view and manage metadata for spatial datasets. b. Arc Map is the application used to view, edit and query geospatial data, and create Maps. The ArcMap interface has two main sections, including a table of contents on the left and the data frame(s) which display the map. Items in the table of contents correspond with layers on the map. c. ArcToolbox contains geoprocessing, data conversion, and analysis tools, along with much of the functionality in ArcInfo. It is also possible to use batch processing with ArcToolbox, for frequently repeated tasks.

Day:-III This is the last day of the training programme. There is a discussion on QGIS. QGIS stands for Quantum Geographic Information System.

The following Plug-in of QGIS:-

a) Buffersb) Projectionsc) Clipsd) Unions

Conclusions:-

Remote sensing and GIS are integral to each other. The development of Remote Sensing is of no use without the development of GIS and vice versa. Remote Sensing has the capability of providing large amount of data of the whole earth and also very frequently. GIS has the capabilities of analyzing a large amount of data within no time. These voluminous data would have become useless without the development of GIS. Manual handling of one time remote sensing data would take years together, by the time a number of multi date data would have piled for analysis. Likewise capability of GIS would have no use without the development of Remote Sensing technology, which provides voluminous data.

The RS & GIS technology is a new tool for us. So in these 3 days we have cleared some basic concept on this matter. The RS & GIS is a vast concept, so it will take some time to implement it in the programme.

It was informed that 93 MCU in OTELP villages and equivalent number in non OTELP villages totaling to 186 Mother Chick Units, 398 Broiler Units , 3998 goatery units & 3601 Night shelters have been established by tribal households in 7 OTELP,ITDAs. All the Micro Finace Officers also informed their achievement made under livestock activities in their respective ITDAs. The guest speaker Dr. S.C. Giri, Sr. Scientist & Dr. R.K.S. Bais Pr. Scientist of CARI, Bhubaneswar gave their introductions to the participants.

Dr. S.C. Giri, Sr. Scientist, CARI explained about duckery production in rural area under scavenging condition & hatchery management for sustainable livelihoods of the tribals. He explained about low cost housing under rural condition& integrated duckery farming in paddy field etc.

Dr. R. K Bais, Pr. Scientist, CARI explained different indigenous and exotic breeds of duck, brooding, health, feed and feeding management for ducks. He stressed that under Indian conditions khaki Campbell is the ideal breed for egg production, which gives 300 to 340 per year. AYLESBURI & Muscovy can be reared for meat purpose. The duck should attain 2.5 KG at 6 weeks of age. MUSCOVY duck is having lean meat and less fat. The breeds like CRESTED white duck and white call drake are the ornamental varieties. The requirement of floor space is 1 sqft. per duckling during brooding. 1% Malathian can be spray per killing external parasite. The litter should be kept dry as wet litter will create ammonia. As the ducklings are very prone to aflatoxin, the maize and groundnut cake should be avoided in the duck feed. The feed to be given to ducks need to be consumed within 1 to 1.5 hours. The ducks are relatively more resistance to common diseases. The duck cholera and plague are the dreadful diseases in ducks. Therefore, the vaccination of ducks should be done against these diseases.

Training Programme on Time & Stress Management

th thThe training cum sensitization programme organized on 25 & 26 March,2015 by the

PSU, was attended by all staff of PSU, OTELP . At the outset, the PO (CB) of the PSU welcomed all the participants to the training cum sensitization programme . Revenue & Administrative Officer explained the need of this training cum sensitization programme on time & stress management.

Trainers Sri Satya Prasanna Mishra and Smt. Shriya Mishra gave their introduction to the participants. To start with , Sri Satya Prasanna Mishra explained that Time management is the act or process of planning and exercising conscious control over the amount of time spent on specific activities, especially to increase effectiveness, efficiency or productivity. It is a meta - activity with the goal to maximize the overall benefit of a set of other activities within the boundary condition of a limited amount of time.

Ÿ Time management may be aided by a range of skills, tools, and techniques used to

manage time when accomplishing specific tasks, projects, and goals complying with a

due date. Initially, time management referred to just business or work activities, but

eventually the term broadened to include personal activities as well. A time

management system is a designed combination of processes, tools, techniques, and

methods. Time management is usually a necessity in any project development as it

determines the project completion time and scope

Ÿ The major themes arising from the literature on time management include the

following :

Ÿ Creating an environment conducive to effectiveness

Ÿ Setting of priorities

Ÿ Carrying out activity around those priorities

Ÿ The related process of reduction of time spent on non-priorities

Ÿ Incentives to modify behavior to ensure compliance with time-related deadlines.

Ÿ Time management has been considered to be a subset of different concepts such as:

Ÿ Project Management : Time Management can be considered to be a project management

subset and is more commonly known as project planning and project scheduling. Time

Management has also been identified as one of the core functions identified in project

management.

Ÿ Attention Management : Attention Management relates to the management of cognitive

resources, and in particular the time that humans allocate their mind (and organize the minds

of their employees) to conduct some activities.

“If there is a competitor for God in the world today, I would say that it is stress. Stress has become almost synonymous to God-it is omnipresent.

Smt. Shriya Mishra to define with stress briefed as stress is too much to do, too little time, and no energy. She asked the participants whether they agree with her or not. As seen in normal practice, in short time, we have to do a lot, but there is no energy, and this causes stress. She explained about how to get rid of stress.

Ÿ By reducing the workload – This does not appear to be a possibility these days.

Ÿ By increasing the time – This is which we cannot do. It is fixed, unless we go to another planet.

Ÿ By increasing the energy level within us – And this the only option we are left with.

She continued as when we have enough energy and enthusiasm, we are able to handle any challenge. This is what H.H. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar said in the European

thParliament, Brussels, Belgium on 4 April,2015.She narrated about how Yoga can help.

Yoga provides us tools and techniques to lead a stress-free and a tension free l i fe . And i t is a misconception that Yoga takes time rather yoga gives us time. The benefits of Yoga are many manifolds. It has health benefits too. It changes the behavior of a person because behavior depends on the stress levels in a person. It creates a friendly disposition and a pleasant atmosphere in people.

In Bhagavat Gita Lord Krishna has said,'Yoga karmasu kaushalam'. That is 'Yoga is skill in action'. It is not just an exercise. And every one wants skill. Every one wants to be innovative, increase their intuitive ability, communicative skills. And all these are effects of Yoga.

Some of the researches done at AIIMS, New Delhi on Sudarshan Kriya and other Breathing techniques are:-

i)Sudarshan Kriya induces relaxation. Glucose spared from the muscles and RBCs are available to the brain leading to state of body relaxation and mental alertness.

Odisha Tribal Empowerment and Livehoods Programme ( OTELP)16

Page 20: Nurturing Capacity

Nurturing Capacity

ii) Stress Hormone Serum Cortisol and stress enzyme serum lactose which are indicators

of stress level in the mind and body of the Sudarshan Kriya practitioner are significantly low. It

indicates that SK and other Pranayam techniques reduce the stress level. So regular practice of

breathing techniques can help significantly reduce the stress level and with that most of the

modern diseases also go away. Yoga provides greater energy and enthusiasm for life.

Well begun is more than half done – Start the day off with some yoga and meditation. Basic yoga stretches and warm ups help loosens up and the meditation refreshes making one fully charged and ready to tackle the rest of the day with energy and enthusiasm.

Basic yoga stretches and warm ups refreshes a person and make him charged and ready to tackle the rest of the day. Yoga gives deeper than deepest rest possible. And a well rested healthy person can be very dynamic unlike a person who is stressed and tired. So Yoga keeps one healthy, it energizes one. This way one saves a lot of time which might get wasted in waiting to meet the doctor in the hospital or a clinic. So yoga should be made a part of life.
