CPR Certification

As I am qualified in CPR I am able to responsibly and safely perform first aid in the case

of an emergency. Being certified gives me a sense of confidence on a daily basis because if the

need for anyone to be resuscitated were to come about I know that I am able to help. My CPR

certification is relevant to nursing because it was a non-academic requirement I needed to earn

upon entering the nursing program at Trent University to be able to partake in the clinical

courses. My CPR certification determined whether or not I was able to complete required

courses for my diploma of Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Medquest Certification

The certification is proof that I was involved in a week long program exploring health

care careers and basic practices. At this camp we were visited by several professionals in the

health care field. We were also taught basic health care techniques such as stitching and casting.

This is relevant to nursing because the College of Nurses of Ontario’s competencies states that

one should “proactively seek new information, knowledge and best practices” (College of Nurses

of Ontario, 2014, p. 7). During the time we spent at the camp we were taught health care

techniques in an ethical way.

Track Participant

I was a member of my high school’s track and field team for four years. Track is not only

an individual sport but a team sport as well. To be successful you need to be committed to the

attending the practices as the workouts determines your success in competitions. You also

needed interpersonal and intrapersonal skills because the events you participated in depended

upon your teammate’s performance and your own self-regulation. This is relevant to nursing

because the College of Nurses of Ontario’s competencies states that one must “demonstrate

accountability and acceptance of responsibility for one’s own actions and decisions” (College of

Nurses of Ontario, 2014, p. 5). While competing, if you did not finish an event as well as you

expected you had to accept that it might have been because you had skipped practices or ate

unhealthy when there was better options. You had to accept that you were the only one

responsible for your own failures.

Soccer Coach

I was a coach for the girls U-14 team for two years. As a coach you need to be able to

exhibit leadership skills such as confidence, organization and initiative. To be a successful coach

you also need good interpersonal relationship skills in order to maintain a healthy relationship

between the other coaches, athletes and the athlete’s parents. The skills needed to be a coach go

hand in hand with the College of Nurses of Ontario’s competencies. One of the competencies

states that one must display “initiative, confidence and encourage collaborative interactions”

(College of Nurses of Ontario, 2014, p. 5). As a coach I was displaying all of those

characteristics.

Academic Integrity Module

The accomplishment of the academic integrity module is proof that I will demonstrate

integrity throughout my academic year. I am promising that I will be honest and moral while

completing assignments and tests. The module is relevant to nursing because in the College of

Nurses of Ontario’s competencies it states that one must demonstrate integrity throughout all

professional interactions (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2014).

My Day Assignment

The completion of my ‘My Day’ assignment is related to nursing practice through

therapeutic communication skills. I was able to complete this poster after having multiple

conversations with Lorraine. As she is an older adult I had to use techniques such as close and

open-ended questions, eye contact, using a lower tone of voice as well as ensuring I was always

in the line of vision during these conversations.

safeTALK Certification

The completion of the safeTalk suicide awareness course is related to nursing care as

suicide can be a serious subject. Quite often older adults will commit suicide to put themselves

out of their misery. Through this course I am now educated on how to talk to people who are

considering suicide. I am better prepared on how to react and what to do if someone were to tell

me or give hints that they were thinking about suicide.

NVCI Certificate

The completion of the two day Nonviolent Crisis Interventions is related to the nursing

practice as it is a useful skill that can be used to avoid violent situations. This course taught me

how to avoid getting injured and avoid injuring others when dealing with agitated individuals.

Pan Am Games Volunteer Certification

These certificates are proof

of my experience while

volunteering at the 2015 Pan

American Games in Toronto,

Ontario. This experience relates to

nursing as I had to portray skills

that are necessary for nursing such

as problem solving, flexibility and

verbal communication.

Influenza Vaccinations

This certificate is relevant to nursing practice as influenza vaccinations are necessary for

working in the health care field.

Friends of Honduran Children Trip

In October of 2015 I went on a trip with Friends of Honduran Children and Trent

University which counted towards my NURS 2020 credit. This experience is relevant to nursing

practice as it gave me a variety of skills that improved my ‘in-practice’ skills such as

communication skills and thinking on your feet.
