WelcometotheAssociateofAppliedScienceDegreeinNursingProgramatWayneCountyCommunityCollegeDistrict(WCCCD).WearepleasedyouhavechosenWCCCDtopursueyournursingeducation.Wearecommittedtoassistyouinaccomplishingyourcareergoals.Thenursingprogramisveryrigorous,academicallydense,andyouwillbechallenged.However,youarecapableofsuccess.Essentialtoyoursuccessisongoingcommunicationbetweenstudentsandfaculty.Facultywillprovidedidactic,lab,andclinicalcourseinstructionandintegratereal-worldexamplestoexpandyourexperiences.Asadultlearners,youmustactivelyparticipatebyarrivingtoeachscheduledclasssessionpreparedandassumeresponsibilityforyourlearningfromtheinitialdayofclasstocompletionoftheprogram.Weexpectyouwillhavequestionsduringthenexttwoyears.Itisimportanttoseekanswersfromacrediblesourcetoavoidunnecessaryanxietycausedbysecond-handinformation,misinterpretation,offactsandrumors.Ifyouhaveaquestion,seekclarificationbyspeakingtoyourinstructor,assignednursingmentor,ornursingadministration. Student/GraduateLearningOutcomesAsdefinedbyNLN,thefourbroadoutcomespicturedatthetopofthemodelrepresenttheexpectedculminationofalllearningexperiencesprovidedduringeachtypeofnursingprogram,includingthemasteryofessentialcorenursingpracticecompetencies,builtuponthesevencorevaluesandsixintegratingconcepts.Theoutcomesincreaseincomplexityinbothcontentandpracticeapplicabletodidacticandclinicalcourses.Allessentialcoursecompetenciesareassumedwithinthesefourgeneraloutcomes(NLN,2010,page9):

Thecurriculumpreparesstudentstoachievetheoutcomesofthenursingprogram,includingsafepracticeincontemporaryhealthcareenvironments.

CLINICALPRACTICESETTINGS
ClinicalPracticeLearningEnvironmentTheclinicalexperienceisasignificantlearningcomponentwithinthenursingcurriculum.Itprovidesnursingstudentswithrichopportunitiestousethetheoryandskillslearnedintheclassroomandlabsettings.Itisalsotheplaceinwhichnursingstudentsseetheartandscienceofnursingappliedandbegintodeveloptheiruniquestyle.Theclinicalplacementexperienceisthesynthesizerfornursingeducation,affordingstudentstheopportunitytodevelopclinicalreasoningskills,nursingskills,timemanagementskillsandbecomesocializedintotheroleoftheprofessionalnurse.Asaresultofcompletingthenursingprogram,studentswillworkwithchildren,adults,andolderadultswithvariousdiagnosesandconditions,inacutecareinpatientsettings,long-termcarefacilities,andcommunitymentalhealth.Inallsettingsthegoalremainsthesame,thestudentprovidingsafe,competentnursingcare,basedonevidenceandbestpractice.Eachsettinghasagency-specificrulesandguidelinesandstudentsareexpectedtofollow.Nursingstudentsareguestsattheclinicalsites.SafetyisoftheupmostimportanceandnostudentshallengageinconductdetrimentaltotheCollegecommunityorclinicalagency.TheconductofeverystudentshouldreflectwellonWCCCDandinnocaseshouldthatconductincludebehaviorprohibitedbypolicy,regulationorlaw.Conductshallbedeemeddetrimentalif:

ClinicalDressCodeNursingstudentsrepresenttheWayneCountyCommunityCollegeDistrictNursingProgramatclinicalsitesandatprofessionaleventsthatareincorporatedintospecificcourses.Studentswillbegivenguidanceaboutappropriateattirepriortoprofessionalevents.Thedresscodeatclinicalsitesmustcomplywithanyspecificagencyrequirements.Thefollowinggeneralguidelinesareofferedtopromoteaprofessionalappearance,safety,andmedicalasepsis.FollowtheguidelinesindicatedforNursingSkillsLabplusthefollowing:

AllianceforClinicalExperience(ACE)andProgramRequirementsACEplacementisaconfidential,collaborative,web-basedsystemthatallowsmemberhealthcareandeducationalinstitutionsadatabaseforstudentclinicalplacements.TheACEsystemmaintainsthenecessarymedical/healthinformationthatisrequiredforastudenttoworkinahealthcarefacility.ACE-MAPPisanonlinecourseandassessmentareaforthosetraininginthehealthcareprofessions.Asanursingstudent,youarerequiredtopayayearlyprogramfeeandmaintaingoodstandingwithintheACEnetworkforthedurationofyourenrollmentinthenursingprogram.TheACEprogramfeeincludesthreecomprehensiveonlinecoursesandassessmentsinOSHAstandards,HIPAArequirementsandsafetyprecautionswithregardtoBloodBornePathogens.Knowledgeofthesethreesubjectsisarequirementtobeginallclinicalrotations,anduseoftheACEsystemwillfulfillthisrequirementforaoneyearperiod.Youwillhavetheabilitytotakethecoursesandassessmentsatyourconvenienceandviewthestatusofyourcourseworkandclinicalrequirementsatanytime.

Evaluationofstudentperformanceisrecordedbytheinstructorintheory,clinicalandlaboratorysettings.Writtentestresults,clinicalperformancenotes,andlaboratorypracticeareutilizedbytheinstructortodocumentevidenceofastudent’sprogressandlearningneeds.Weeklyclinicalperformanceformsaremaintainedforeachclinicalstudenttodocumenttheextentofachievementofexpectedbehaviors(clinicalcompetencies).Thedate,timeandplacearenotedwithadescriptionofthebehaviorobserved.Studentsshouldexpecttheclinicalfacultytoprovideongoingevaluationthroughthecoursewithafocusonamidterm(formative)andfinalevaluation(summative).GradingScaleThefollowinggradingscaleappliestotheNursingProgram.Studentsmustachieveaminimumof75%intheorycourses:

Uponreceiptofthecompletedpackageor,uponfailuretoreceivetheInstructor’sStatementwithin14calendardaysofthemailingdate,theInstructionalAdministratorshalleithersustaintheinstructor’sgradeorrecommendagradechangetobecarriedoutbytheinstructor.Thisdecisionshallbemailedtoboththestudentandtheinstructor(SeeGradeAppealStatement–InstructionalAdministrator).Failuretoreceivearesponsewithin14daysfromtheinstructordoesnotconstituteorimplyagradewillbechangedwithoutproperdocumentationfromthestudent.
8. ArecommendationtochangeagraderequiresthattheinstructorcompleteandsubmitaChangeofGradeformtotheInstructionalAdministratorwithin14calendardaysafterreceivingthewrittennoticeofthestudentgradeappeal.Anadministrativechangeofgradeismadewhentheinstructorfailstocomplyorisunabletocompletetherequest.
9. EithertheinstructororthestudentmayappealthedecisioninwritingwithintenworkingdaystotheGRADEAPPEALCOMMITTEE,c/oViceChancellorofEducationalAffairs.
10. Ifthegradeisappealed,theappealshallbeheardbyagradeappealcommitteegenerallycomprisedof:a. Onefacultymemberinthediscipline(ifpossible)butnottheinstructorwhosegradeisin dispute.Facultyareappointedbythefacultycollectivebargainingunit.b. OnerepresentativeappointedbytheappropriateStudentServicesAdministrator.c. ThePresidentoftheStudentGovernmentordesignee(ifpossible).d. ThecommitteeshallbechairedbytheViceChancellorofEducationalAffairsordesignee.

AcademicProgressionAllstudentsmustachievea“C”orbetterinallnursingcoursesinordertoprogressinthenursingprogram.Receivingafinalcoursegradeofa“D”or“E”willnotallowastudenttoprogress.Incourseswithboththeoryandclinicalcomponents,failuretoachieveapassinggradeineithertheoryorclinicalcomponentresultsinfailureofthecourse.Clinicalevaluationsaregradedas“Satisfactory”or“Unsatisfactory”.Studentsmustsuccessfullymeetalloftheclinicalobjectives/learningoutcomestoreceivea“Satisfactory”clinicalevaluation.
TheNursingProgramisdesignedtobecompletedintwoyears.Currentsemestercoursesmustbecompletedbeforeprogressiontothecourseornextsemester.

CHAPTERTEN:ETHICS,CIVILITY,ANDBEHAVIORSTANDARDSEthicalbehaviormeansthatanindividualislivingandworkinginanethicalway-byasetofstandardsthataregenerallyconsideredtoberightorgood.AsaNursingProgramstudent,itisexpectedyouwilldisplayethical,respectful,professionalbehaviorinALLlearningenvironments.FailuretodosoresultsindismissalfromtheNursingProgram.ConfidentialityTherighttoprivacyofstudents,faculty,staff,clients,familiesandotherhealthprofessionalsshouldbejudiciouslyprotectedbythoseassociatedwiththenursingprogram.Awarenessandrespectforrightsandprivilegesofothersisanexpectationofallwithinthehelpingprofessions.Studentshonor,respect,andmaintainconfidencesandprivacyofclients.Asstudentsinteractwithandencounterclients-inanyform–written,oral,orother–theymustpracticeconfidentialityunderallcircumstances.Aclient’sinitialsonlyareusedasidentifiers.Thismayvaryperclinicalsite.Talkwithyourclinicalfacultyabouthowaclient’sidentifyingdata(name,forexample),shouldbepresented/recordedasyoucompleteassignmentsanddiscussclientsduringpre/post-conferences.Whenknowledgegainedinconfidenceisrelevantoressentialtoothers,professionaljudgmentshouldbeusedbyallwhensharinginformation.Itistheresponsibilityofallthosewhohaveaccesstoinformationtoseethatsuchinformationisaccessibleonlytothosedirectlyconcernedwiththeindividual’shealthcaredelivery.Noreproductionoftheclient’shospitalrecordisallowed.Documentscontainedinaclient’shospitalrecordcannotberemoved.Onlineinformationaboutaclientcannotbedownloaded,printed,savedonanexternaldrive(flashdrive,forexample),forwarded,removedortransferredfromtheclinicalpracticesiteinanyway.Clientinformationshouldnotbediscussedoutsideoftheclinicallearningenvironment,andonlywiththoseinvolvedwiththeclient’scare.Failuretotakethisintoaccountisconsideredaninvasionofthepatient’srighttoprivacyandmayleadtothestudent’sdismissalfromtheNursingProgram.TheHealthInsuranceandAccountabilityActof1996(HIPAA)wasenactedAugust21,1996to:
• Protecthealthinsurancecoverageforworkersandtheirfamilieswhentheychangeorlosetheirjobs• Establishnationalstandardsforelectronichealthcaretransactionsandnationalidentifiersforproviders,
healthinsuranceplans,andemployers,• Givetherighttoprivacytoindividualsfromage12through18.Theprovidermusthaveasigned
disclosurefromtheaffectedbeforegivingoutanyinformationonprovidedhealthcaretoanyone,includingparents.
ReviewguidelinesforclinicalbehaviorsdescribedearlierintheHandbook.ScholasticEthicsCodeThepurposeofthiscodeistoencourageandpromotepositivelearningandethicalstudentbehavior,definebehaviorviolatingscholasticethics,specifyproceduresforthedeterminationofthefactsoftheallegedviolation,andtodefinepenalties.ItistheresponsibilityofthestudenttomaintainthehighestethicalstandardsinacademicachievementwithinthepositivelearningenvironmentprovidedbytheCollege.

GuidelinesforScholasticCodeofEthicsTheexpectationatWayneCountyCommunityCollegeDistrictisthattheprinciplesoftruthandhonestywillbepracticedinallacademicmatters.Therefore,theCollegeregardsactsofacademicdishonesty,includingsuchactivitiesasplagiarismorcheating,asveryseriousoffenses.Intheeventthatcheating,plagiarismorotherformsofacademicdishonestyonthepartofstudentsarevalidated,thestudent(s)willbedismissedfromtheNursingProgram.Thefollowingisaguidetoassiststudentsinobservingpositivebehaviorinscholasticethics:
• Studentsmustdotheirownworkandsubmitonlytheirownworkonexaminations,reportsandprojects,unlessotherwisepermittedbytheinstructor.
• Studentscanbenefitfromworkingingroups.Theymaycollaborateorcooperatewithotherstudentsduringtake-homeexaminationsonlyifspecificallyauthorizedbytheinstructorintheclasssyllabusoratthetimeoftheexamination;
• Studentsmustfollowallwrittenand/orverbalinstructionsgivenbytheinstructorordesignatedCollegerepresentativepriortotakinganexamination,placementassessments,test,quizzesandevaluations;
• Studentsareresponsibleforadheringtocourserequirementsasspecifiedbytheinstructorinthecoursesyllabus.
ScholasticCodeofEthicsViolationsStudentsenrolledincollegeassumetheobligationofconductingthemselvesinaccordancewiththehighestethicalstandards.Actionsconstitutingviolationsofscholasticethicsinclude,butarenotlimitedtothefollowing:
CheatingIntentionaldeceitduringthepursuitofacademiccoursework,tests,classassignmentsoractivitiesinanytestingarea,learningcenter,clinicalsettingortutorialsession,orinthegatheringofresearchmaterialsisconsideredcheating.Cheatingincludesbutisnotlimitedto:
• Copyingfromanotherstudent’stestpaperorknowinglyallowingyourtesttobecopied;• Usingmaterialsduringatestthatarenotclearlyauthorizedbythepersongivingthetest;• Collaboratingwithanotherstudentduringthetestwithoutpermission;• Knowinglyusing,buying,selling,offering,transportingorsolicitinganyofthecontentsofatest;• Takingatestforanotherperson,orpermittinganotherstudenttotakeatestforyou;• Bribingorattemptingtobribeanotherpersontoobtainapassinggradeorabettergradeonatestor
foracourse;• Intentionalmisconstruingfactsorincidentsrelatingtoanevaluatedexerciseorassignmentthat
wouldchangetheearnedgrade;• Electronic,internettransmissionsorwirelesstransferofdata.
Atnotimewillstudentphotographexam/quizorScantron,writecontentfromexam/quizontootherpaper,orremoveexam/quizorScantronfromclassroom.Ifsuchoccurs,studentwillreceivea“0”for
theexam/quiz,the“0”scoreiscalculatedwithfinalcoursegrade,andstudentisreferredtotheDeanofNursingforfurtheraction.

PlagiarismTherepresentationoftheworkofothersasone’sown,includingtheuseoftermpaperswrittenbyothersisplagiarism.Theuseofanother’swords,ideasorinformationwithoutacknowledgementisalsoplagiarism.Thestudentshouldseekguidancefromtheinstructoraboutacceptablemethodstobeusedtoacknowledgetheworkandideasofothers.CollusionObtainingfromorgivingtoanotherstudentunauthorizedassistanceormaterialinanycourseworkiscollusion.CompromisingInstructionalandTestMaterials/Misrepresentation/FraudUnauthorizedacquisition,tamperingwith,oralterationofinstructionaland/ortestingmaterialsfromdesks,cabinets,workrooms,classrooms,laboratories,instructor’soffices,tutoringlabs,testingareas,assessmentareas,secretarialoffices,Collegeofficesand/orotherareasiscompromisingtestmaterials.
StudentCodeofConductViolationsInappropriateand/orillegalstudentconductthatrepresentsgroundsfordisciplinaryactionincludes,butisnotlimitedtothefollowing:
• Dishonesty,suchasknowinglyfurnishingfalseinformationtotheCollege;• Forgery,alterationormisuseofCollegedocuments,records,identification,e-mailorotherelectronic
information;• Obstructionordisruptionofteaching,administrationoftheCollege,disciplinaryproceduresorother
CollegeDistrictactivities,communityservicefunctionsorotherauthorizedCollegeDistrict-sponsoredactivitiesonoroffCollegepremises;
• PhysicalactionsagainstanypersononDistrict-ownedorcontrolledpropertyorataCollege/Districtsponsoredorsupervisedfunction,oranyconductthatthreatensorendangersthehealthorsafetyofanyperson.Aphysicalactionisanactionthatresultsincontactwithanotherorwhichplacesapersoninreasonableapprehensionofharmfulcontact;
• Harassmentordiscriminationofanyonebasedonrace,religion,color,sex,age,height,weight,maritalstatus,nationalorigin,disability,sexualorientationorstatusasaveteran;
• PsychologicalactionsagainstanypersononCollegeDistrict-ownedpropertyorcontrolledpropertyoratCollegeDistrict-sponsoredorsupervisedactivity.Apsychologicalactionisanyactionthatterrifies,intimidates,threatensorharassesanother,orwhichplacesapersoninreasonableapprehensionofsuchaction.Psychologicalactionsinclude,butarenotlimitedto:threats,stalking,harassmentanddiscrimination,includingtheuseofe-mailortelephonesystemstocarryoutsuchaction;
• TheftordamagetopropertyoftheCollege/DistrictorofamemberoftheCollegecommunityorofavisitortotheCollege;
• Possessionoruseoffirearms,explosives,dangerouschemicals,substances,instrumentsorotherweaponsthatcanbeusedtoinflictbodilyharmtoanyindividualordamagetoabuildingorgroundsofCollege/District-ownedorcontrolledproperty;
• FailuretocomplywithdirectionsofCollege/Districtofficialsorlawenforcementofficersactinginperformanceoftheirduties,and/orfailuretoidentifyoneselftothesepersonswhenrequestedtodoso;
• Useoftobaccoandtobaccoproducts(smoking)inunauthorizedareas;• Verbalabuseand/orabusivebehavior,includesexcessiveprofanity,threats,intimidation,
harassment,coercion,and/orotherconductwhichthreatensorendangersthehealthorsafetyofanypersonorwhichplacestheminfearofbeingphysicallyabused;

sponsoredorsupervisedfunctionswithoutmakingprovisionsforthemtobecaredfororsupervised.• Useofcomputersforunauthorizedpurposesandengaginginanyactivityaimedatcompromising
computersystemsornetworksecurity.• Inappropriateuseofelectronicdevicessuchasbeepers,cellulartelephonesoranyotherinstrument • thatmightbedisruptiveinanacademicsetting.• FailuretoobtainapprovalfromtheCampusPresidentordesignee,orappropriateadministratorfor
solicitationofanytypewhichinvolvestheCollegestudentbody,Collegeemployeesorvisitors;postingordistributinginformationofanykindwithinthepremisesoftheCollege;sellingofmerchandiseonCollegepropertybyastudentorastudentorganization.
• Anyformofsexualmisconduct.
Theaboveviolationsareillustrativeofthetypeofconductthatwillnotbepermitted,butarenotintendedtobeall-inclusiveandwillresultindisciplineuptoandincludingexpulsion.

CHAPTERELEVEN:GRADUATIONPROCEDURESANDREQUIREMENTSThePinningCeremonyalongwithCommencementsignalsyouraccomplishmentoftheNursingProgram.Thefollowinginformationwillidentifythestepsyouneedtofollowtoensurealldocumentsareinorder.NursingPinningCeremonyThePinningCeremonyfornursingstudentsisheldtwiceeachyear(MayandDecember)alongwiththeRecognitionCeremonyforAlliedHealthPrograms.NursingstudentsarealsoencouragedtoattendtheFormalCommencementCeremonyforWayneCountyCommunityCollegeDistrictthatisheldannuallyinJune.ThePinningCeremonyisanimportantoccasionfornursingstudents.Thedistinctivepintheyreceivefromtheirschoolsymbolizesprofessionalachievementandtherighttopracticenursing.Itisalsoalinktoa1,000yearoldtradition.ManyyearsagoinmedievalEurope,organizationscalledguildsappeared;theseguildswereresponsibleformuchofthenationaltrainingofthetime.Theemblemswornbytheguildmembersindicatedtowhichguildaworkerwasamember.Theguildemblemsalsoindicatedservicetothecommunity.Ahospitalbadgewasgiventotheeducatednurse.Inthelate19thcenturymanyhospitalsadoptedFlorenceNightingales’ideasandstartedschoolsfortheeducationandtrainingofnurses.Outstandingstudentnurseswhoexcelledwereawardedgoldorsilvermedals.Gradually,allofthenursingschoolsstartedgivingamedalorbadgetoallgraduatesoftheirprogram.TheFlorenceNightingalelampthatiscommonlyincludedinthepinningceremonyisasymbolofthelightgivenbyknowledge.Today’snursingpinhasbecomeadistinctivemarkofnursingexcellenceandservicetoothers.Besidesidentifyingthesourceofthenurse’seducation,italsoindicatestothepatient,andothers,thatthenursehassuccessfullycompletedaparticularnursingprogramandhastheabilitytofunctionasanurse.ItistheintentoftheNursingProgramatWayneCountyCommunityCollegeDistricttoeducateandtrainhighlyqualifiednurseswithasoundknowledgeofthenursingprofession.ApplicationforDegreeFourthsemesterstudentsintheNursingProgrammustfollowWCCCDproceduresandtimelinestoapplyfordegree.Eligibilitytoparticipateincommencementexerciseshingesuponmeetingdegreecompletionrequirements.Priortothesemesterthestudentintendstograduate,heorshemust:

CHAPTERTWELVE:REGISTEREDNURSELICENSURESuccessfulcompletionoftheNationalCouncilofLicensingExamination-RegisteredNurse(NCLEX-RN)forStatelicensureallowsWCCCDNursingProgramgraduatestopracticeasaRegisteredNurse(RN).Thefollowinginformationwillassistyou.ApplicationforRegisteredNurseLicensureStudentsreceiveinformationaboutapplicationforlicensureduringthefourthsemesteroftheNursingProgram.TheDeanoftheNursingcertifieseachapplicantashavingmet:
