COLLEGE OFSCIENCES

Nursing Bachelor’s Degree

Impact LivesGraduates of SHSU’s Department of Nursing have a number of career options. Those wanting personal interaction with patients can pursue staff nursing, rural nursing, clinical nursing, or home health. Others may desire a career in management/administration or policy development. Teaching, health education, and research are additional career options. Job outlook for registered nurses is forecasted to be excellent over the next few years, with much faster growth than the average for all occupations.

SCHOL ARSHIPS

Nursing Program students may apply for applicable scholarships by following the specific instructions for each. Students may also apply for non-degree specific scholarships by filling out the ScholarX application. Transfer scholarships are available for students who would like to continue their academic career at Sam Houston.

ADMISSION

Admission to the Nursing Program at SHSU, an upper level program, requires:• Application to SHSU (if not enrolled)• Completion of prerequisites (see website for

details)• Application to the Nursing Program• All official transcripts• Overall GPA of 2.5 and a “C” or better in all

prerequisite coursework• Acceptable score on the TEAS V (Test of

Essential Academic Skills)• Two letters of recommendation• Writing sample

Additionally, nursing students will be required to comply with immunization standards, be AHA CPR certified, have liability and healthcare insurance, complete a background screening, and take drug tests.

Students may be considered pre-nursing until completion of their prerequisites.
