After months of research whichincluded interviewing breast-feedingmothers and watching the positionsthey adopted to feed their babies, theBreastfeeding Chair finally came intobeing. Its ergonomic shape offers:• a low seat to ensure feet are placed

squarely and firmly on the floor,keeping body weight evenlydistributed and the spine straight,preventing back strain

• a gently tilted seat which ensures themother’s back is flat against the chair back, keeping the spineperfectly supported and removingthe need for cushions or pillows

• an integral, inflatable lumbar‘cushion’ which provides perfectsupport for the lower back (inflatedby an integral hand pump)

Check the tog ratingRemember - the higher the tog, the greater thewarmth. For a good safe night’s sleep, babiesneed to be warm but not too hot, which is whywe apply a tog rating to all our sleeping bags,quilts and duvets. A steady nursery temperatureof 18°C is ideal.

The safe way to tuck up - ‘feet to foot’All our sheets and blankets are a good size for tucking in,allowing you to dress the cot ‘feet to foot’ – the recommendedsleeping position to prevent your baby from shuffling too farunder the covers. Their feet should be placed at the foot of the cot with covers firmly tucked in and coming no higher thanthe shoulders.

FSID’s top tips for sleep safetyThe Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths(FSID) is one of the UK’s leading charitiespromoting infant health awareness, and preventing infant deaths. For more information visit their website at www.sids.org.uk/fsid. They also run a 24-hour helpline on 020 7233 2090. Their top tips for sleep safety are:

•Always place your baby on their back to sleep.•Avoid smoking in pregnancy, that includes

you too, dad-to-be.•Don’t let anyone smoke in the same room

as your baby.•Don’t let your baby get too hot.•Quilts, duvets and pillows should not be

used for babies under 12 months old, as they may overheat.

•Keep your baby’s head uncovered.•If your baby is unwell in any way, seek

medical advice at once.•Don’t fall asleep with your baby on the sofa.•Keep your baby’s cot in your bedroom for

the first 6 months.•Do not share a bed with your baby if you or

your partner smoke, have been drinking alcohol,taking drugs or are on medication which makesyou drowsy or excessively tired.

New baby? Get a new mattressEvery new baby deserves a new mattress as theinterior of an already used mattress may have beenpermanently compressed by the previous baby'sweight, making it less comfortable and less effective.

Keep it cleanKeeping your baby’s mattress clean is essential, asuninvited dust mites may lead baby to develop allergicreactions. Our mattresses are made from a non-PVCmaking it easy to regularly wipe the surface. Mattresseswith non-removable covers should be vacuumed orsponge cleaned. Depending on mattress type, turnregularly to maintain shape and/or rotate it head tofoot so both ends are used equally.

Careful of overheatingFor babies under 12 months we recommend that quilts and duvets are NOT used, and advise against a pillow, sheepskin or a hot water bottle. The amount of bedding to use depends on the room temperature(18°C is ideal) and what your baby is wearing, but werecommend a mix of sheets, blankets and a coverlet

so that you can add or remove layers as necessary. Our recommendations in the chart are based on a baby wearing a nappy, vest and sleepsuit. For a cosy alternative to traditional top sheets, try a baby sleeping bag (see page 206-208). Available for some of our mattresses as a unique zip-off top panel, CoolmaxActive helps prevent your little one from overheating (see overleaf).

Think about LocationNever place the cot near a hot radiator, a sunny window,shelves, ledges or appliances that your baby can gethold of. Also avoid locating it beneath a wall-hangingframe (especially one with glass or a mirror).

Mind the gapLittle arms and legs can get caught in gaps, so it’scrucial to get the right mattress size and shape, with no gaps of more than 4cm. We have mattresses to fitall our current cots and cot beds perfectly, and specialsizes for any non-Mothercare items you might have.

SafetyBaby sleeping bags meet all safety regulations andrelevant British Standards.But babies must not beallowed to over-heat sodon’t use a duvet/quilt(unsuitable for babies under12 mths anyway) as well as a sleeping bag.
