About the programmeA holistic approach is fundamental to themanagement of projects and inherent in thecourse philosophy is the awareness of theinterface relationships of differing aspects ofthe process and how the process interactswith its environment.

The development of knowledge andunderstanding is derived from study of thekey areas of risk, value, finance, procurement,business strategies, law and informationtechnology.

The psychology of project teams, teamdevelopment leadership, motivation andconflict are important considerations of theprogramme.

Project Management at Northumbria hasstrong links with industry and company visits,live case studies and guest lecturers (who arespecialists in their fields) are an integral partof the programme.

AwardsMSc Project Management. Students register for the full MSc Award andmust complete the 12 taught modules andalso the dissertation which is equivalent to afurther 6 modules. The Masters degree can becompleted in a minimum of 3 academic yearspart-time and on-line, or 12 months studyfull-time.

A Postgraduate Diploma in ProjectManagement. Students must complete 12 taught modulesfor the diploma which can be completed in aminimum of 2 years part-time or 2 trimestersof full-time study.

The diploma award is made when the studentdecides not to continue to the full MScaward.

A Postgraduate Certificate in ProjectManagement is achieved upon completion ofsix core modules which can be gained in 1year of part-time study or one trimester offull-time study.

Both the postgraduate Diploma andPostgraduate Certificate are step-off awardsfrom the full MSc programme.

MSc Project ManagementProject management is ideally suited to a wide range of professions and is an effective management strategy which presents excitingchallenges to the ambitious professional.

The SchoolThe School of the Built Environment locatedon the City Campus, in the heart of Newcastleoffers a wide range of high quality full-time,sandwich and part-time programmes leadingto vocational qualifications.

Students have access to a large universitylibrary, a dedicated postgraduate resourcecentre and excellent computer facilities. All areopen into the evening and at weekends andare actively used throughout the summer.

All programmes draw on the School’s excellentteaching, research and consultancy experienceand on its strong links with industry. TheSchool’s active research programme also worksclosely with governmental departments,industrial partners and private practice.

The assessment of the learning outcomes ofindividual modules reflects the varying needs of those modules, and focuses upon therelationship between theory and practice.

There are a variety of assessment techniquesutilised in the programme that best contribute tothe development of appropriate professional,personal and academic skills. Assessmentincludes critical essays, case studies, reports,practice projects and presentations as well asmore traditional time constrained assessments.

In the final stage of the programme you will complete a 20,000-word dissertation willgive you the opportunity to focus on a projectmanagement which particularly interests youand which may also be relevant to youremployer organisation.

CPD Modules or part-modules may also be studied ona continuing professional development basis.

The School of the Built Environment has enteredinto a Partnership with the Royal Institution ofChartered Surveyors to promote excellence inteaching and the project managementprofession. On completion of the programmestudents will be eligible to begin the RICSAssessment of Professional Competence.

International communityThe programme is suitable for overseas studentswho wish to obtain a project managementqualification.

An ‘excellent’ schoolIn common with all other schools in theuniversity sector, Built Environment schools areassessed for quality by the Quality AssuranceAgency (QAA) on behalf of the Higher EducationFunding Council.

Our Division has undergone this rigorousexamination, and has been judged to be amongthe best in the country. Six ‘aspects of provision’

were examined, with four achieving the topscore of four, and two achieving a very creditablethree. Teaching was extensively observed with75% of sessions achieving top grade fours and25% threes. Although the QAA discouragessummation of the marks, the leadingnewspapers consider a total of 22 to be ‘excellent’ when compiling their league tables.

Entry requirements

Applicants should normally have an honoursdegree or an equivalent qualification withexperience in industry.

Mature students (over the age of 21) withother qualifications will be considered on merit.

Applicants whose first language is not Englishshould provide evidence of their ability inspoken and written English to a levelequivalent to IELTS 6.0.

There will be additional academic Englishclasses available to support overseas students.

All UK applicants will be interviewed andshould be able to demonstrate a high level ofcommitment and determination to completethis rigorous and demanding course.

For the scientists among you – The International Centre for Life explores all areas of life,science, biotechnology, education and research in an interesting and entertaining way. Ithas a great virtual reality ride too!

Getting aroundNewcastle has a modern Metro system which is the envy of the rest of the UK. Linkedwith the bus service – the Metro makes getting around cheap, fast and efficient. By road,the A1 links Newcastle with London to the south and Edinburgh to the north. The A69joins Newcastle to the M6 which serves the west of the country and Newcastle itself iscar-friendly with lots of parking available.

You can travel easily from most cities by train to Newcastle’s Central Station and there is ahigh speed service from London and Edinburgh. Newcastle has an International Airportwhich operates both domestic and international flights on a regular basis. There are alsoNational Express coach services.

Getting away from it allGolden beaches with huge sand dunes and blue sea, perfect for dipping, if you dare!

Beautiful countryside, the largest man-made lake in Europe, wild moorland and moodywoodland, more castles than any other county in England. For historical visits, walking,outdoor and water sports or just getting a breath of country air Northumberland has it all and all within an hour’s travel from the city!
