Goals

Set up an affordable, secure and reliable Mail and Web access for all students and staff of the National University of Laos

Educate selected System Administrators on the maintenance of Mail/Web servers and the supporting services

In project plan, stated the installation of a Web, Mail and FTP server.Since services were already installed the

team has changed the objective to upgrade them by setting Quota on the user accounts

Earlier an update of the Database Layout was mentioned as an objectiveOn arrival New Database at the

administration was discovered which needed no update

User quota is set on Web, FTP and Mail user accountsSaves valuable disk spaceSpace on hard drives is shared among

students and staff at NUOL.

Shell Script to generate Web, FTP and Mail accounts for users has been made In order to create an account students must

fill in a form which is created by the team

Why a form to create Mail accounts?Obtain user details and their consent for

future reference

DNS and DHCP Servers are installed Proxy Server has been installed

Caching of websites is functional Frequently visited websites load fast Efficient use of available bandwidth

Blocking of websites is functional Web addresses are checked every time with a

collection of illegal websites and in-ethical words.

Students and staff can access their files from anywhere on the network

Firewall has been installed initially not an objectiveUpon arrival the need for a firewall became

clear to the team

Blocks attacks from outside the network Prevents the students to bypass the

proxy server and access blocked websites

can access the internet from a remote location

2 groups of system administrators (SA)SA at the IT CenterSA from the Faculties

The SA from different faculties were trained on the installation of Basic Services (Web and E-mail)

Proper documentation was provided before the training

The System administrators were trained on setting up Web and Mail ServersTools Used In the training

Due to cultural differences as well as language barriers information was hard to access

Challenges – Hardware delay

Hardware for the servers arrived after 4 weeks in the implementation period

Solution Install services on normal workstation and

then copy the configuration files to the actual server when they arrived

Challenges – Hardware delay

Concerning the File Server High End Server ordered

Delivery time Last day in the afternoon

No time to configure the service on the newly arrived server

Solution Lao Team members have the proper knowledge and

documentation to copy the configurations to the new Server.

Challenges – Incorrect Hardware

Dail-up Vendor supplied a router with a digital dial-up

solution when an analog was needed and asked for!

Solution After long discussions the team ordered the analog

module which arrived 3 days before departure After working till 23:00 on the last workday, the Dial-

up Service finally was launched and properly tested

Cisco Router with VoIP expandability is already installed at NUOL

Send Voice and Video over the Local Area Network to one or more remote locationsVideo Conferencing provides NUOL with the

option to deliver lectures to students from a remote location without the teacher or the students having to travel long distances
