Some additional comments from your editor regarding the log entries. See

this merely as a wish-list to simplify the job of editing as all of you use diffe-

rent formats.

- Use a space after . or , (point or comma)

- No need to enter 4920,0 or 4920,00 if a station is spot on nominal frequency, use the

simple 4920. Decimals are only needed if the station is out of nominal frequency.

- You don't need to specify langauge for stations who always use their native language,

like Portuguese for Brazilians or Spanish for most other Latin Americans.

THE GOOD OLD DAYS OF MW DXING Occasionally we talk of the "good old days" of mediumwave DXing, usually referring to

back in the 1960s and earlier. Was it better? By how much? I tabulated the difference

between what was on the band in 1941 and 2018. Too much info to paste into a post

Stopdate for next

SWB is Aug 12.

An almost sensational

entry on the tropical

band is Radio la Voz

de Pueblo on 4920,8.

Our friend Pedro F.

Arrunátegui was the

first to hear the station

and it was at first not

possible identify the

station but he could

get the location in

Peru. But after a few

days listening Pedro

managed to also get

There is more infor-

mation in the section

To the right you can

find some comments

from Carlos Gon-

calves where he asks

you to be careful with

the languages.

I also have some

additional comments

regarding the way

some of you write

I assume the same

comments are valid

also for the logs in

At 1301, the VOI news (interesting item about Argentine Ambassador to Indonesia ex-

people of Argentina in obtaining information. He said "Radio was an important tool in the

past, but radio may still be the strongest communication tool in my country. Radio pro-

grams spread in Argentina. Everyone listens to radio, in the car, while working, you hear

the unID/new Peruvian reported by Daniel Wyllyans as ``4920``, in HCDX:

``4920 kHz UNID (Banda Tropical) Passando música andina e salsa. No inicio do vídeo a

Houve no passado a Radio Quito (Equador), Radio Caracas

Zimbabwe border, S-P is the sixth largest city in Botswana, somewhat SSE of Francistown

(still named that?) which was once known as a radio site. Moeping Hill is *much* harder

to locate, as it may just be a real hill rather than a populated place. All the few Google

search hits on ``"moeping hill" botswana`` lead to DX reports about it! including my own,

and Bill Whitacre`s 909 kHz logs from Maine (at IBB, he surely knows exactly where it

is). I assume the Botswana relay was not originally set up to serve the Mideast, but why

not, if there is a convenient antenna, and an hour to spare on some transmitter? HFCC

shows it`s 100 kW at 10 degrees. That angle misses Kurdistanish Iraq and Iran, rather thru

Israel, Lebanon, Syria into Kurdistanish Turkey. E.g. distance to Diyarbakir is 6.8 mega-

meters or over 4.2 kilomiles, overland (Glenn Hauser, OK)

permiso previo a MTC..

Reportagem UNID 4920 kHz Suspeito (Peru)

emissoras Brasileiras e Peruanas sinal fraco.

Radio Interacional Ecos del Alba (alba betyder gryning, min anm.( OAZ9A 4920.

A musica é peruana.

I norra Chile hör man den hos peruanska invandrare.

Brasilianernas grannar i söder (=argentinarna!) delar cha-

mamé (musikrytmen) med oss.

Comments from Glenn Hauser, DXLD:

It`s on FB, with a number of logo grafix dating back to May - June 2017, mentioning 4910 kHz --- of course, no one

ever heard them on that frequency, or 4920+ until recently.

I retype the florid content of the grafix:

Now the question is, whether they are +0.761 kHz off-frequency, or really believe they are on announced 4910, and

thus +10.761 kHz off??

Besides the rare discovery of a brand-new SW station, we`re glad to learn that this has led Pedro to end his almost 2-

year ``sabbatical`` away from DXing! (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

AUSTRALIA. 5055 4KZ.

Hi Glenn,

Sent off an inquiry to Al Kirton (general manager of Radio 4KZ). Appreciate his response received on June 30, at

0212 UT: "5055 has been on the air every day. Due to seasonal conditions, we are only running 5055 between 6 am

[2000 UT] and 8 pm [1000 UT] local time. Our target area is 1000 km around Innisfail [Queensland - Ron]. The signal

dies sharply in this region before 7pm [0900 UT].

Our times will vary with the seasons."

Innisfail sunrise now at 6:47 AM AEST (2047 UT) and sunset at 5:52 PM AEST (0752 UT).

Back on June 4 & 6, I reported former sign off time for 4KZ, at 1353* UT (11:53 PM AEST).

AUSTRALIA. [WOR] China's growing radio presence in the Pacific?

Pacific: Recently, the DX Listening Digest documented some articles concerning "China Radio International grabbing

up Radio Australia frequencies". As short wave listeners, we know "the rest of the story". Kai Ludwig already made

the necessary comments, but wondered about the situation on FM.

If you leave out New Zealand and the islands under Australian, British, French, New Zealand and US control, you get

13 island states. Looking at the World Radio TV Handbook 2018, you find many program relays (BBC, R. Australia,

RNZ Pacific), which might be only partially documented in the WRTH 2018. So one can only compare the specially

designated 24-h-FM-relays of the competitors. The result looks like this:

Cook Islands: R. Australia

Fiji: BBC World Service, R. Australia, R. France Internationale

Kiribati: BBC, R. Australia

Papua New Guinea: BBC, R. Australia

Samoa: China Radio International, R. Australia Solomon Islands: R. Australia

Tonga: CRI, R. Australia

Vanuatu: BBC, CRI, R. Australia, R. France Internationale It is difficult to research the TV situation and other media,

but at least regarding the FM presence, Radio Australia is still a clear leader (Dr Hansjoerg Biener, 2 July 2018, DX

LISTENING DIGEST)

BRAZIL. July 13 at 0543-0554 UT, I survey the mostly JBA carriers from overnight stations, some with a bit of au-

dio, to measure them precisely, as to be a Brazilian SW station, you *must* be off-frequency:

11934.938, R. Evangelizar

11855.825, R. Aparecida

9818.834, R. Nove de Julho

9725.359, R. Evangelizar

9664.408, R. Voz Missionária

9630.552, R. Aparecida

9564.960, Super R. Deus é Amor [vs over-run Cuban jamming]

(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

KOREA. Echo of Hope - Voice of Hope (VOH)

June 22 - Interesting happenings with Echo of Hope - Voice of Hope (VOH). At 1105 UT, noted 4885 was off the air;

very unusual for them to be off; while all the other VOH frequencies were jammed by N. Korea (3985, 5995, 6250,

6350, and also 9100). Hiroyuki Komatsubara (Japan), at 0918, also found 4885 silent. Rechecking at 1148, I heard

4885 back on the air with their usual good signal and as is normally the case with no jamming at all.

4885 (not jammed) // 9100 (jammed), had singing station jingle at 1157, along with chimes and full ID in Korean;

1200 with "Onule Soshi" (Today's News), but then very surprised to hear the jamming on 9100 ended at 1200, be-

coming as good as 4885.

My 4885 kHz. audio, 1157+ UT (singing station jingle, chimes & ID) at http://goo.gl/an4gjA

My 9100 kHz. audio at 1159+ UT (jammed and clear ending of it with the news), at http://goo.gl/jSJ16M

BOLIVIA, 6134.8, Radio Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz de la Sierra is on air again, but with distorted signal. Heard here in

Reinante, 2329-2340, 22-06, . Spanish, comments, very weak, distorted and with interference from Aparecida. 12321.

June 20 and 21 I heard it via SDR Kiwi Paraguay and Pardihno, Sao Pauo, 6134.88 kHz, at 1015 UTC with Bolivian

songs, comments in Spanish and identifications "Radio Santa Cruz", but very distorted signal. Aparecida out of air at

that moment.

I contacted again with the station to inform them about the distorted signal and here the reply:

"Estimado Manuel:

They say they continue with some problems on short wave, and the the technicians are working to improving the

conditions of the transmitter.
