I have been here for two weeks and I have learnt so much about the wonderful Edge Hill State School and learning community. I admire greatly the work the teachers are doing with students and I am in awe of the welcoming and respectful behaviours that the students embrace in their interactions every day. We all agree that COVID Normal is great and everyone was relieved to rid ourselves face masks. The return to more normal operations across Queensland has meant some of the planned Term 3 activities are now able to go ahead – just more localised. Our school choir will complete in Choral Fanfare but will be performing at the St Monica’s Cathedral next Thursday 2nd of September. A State Adjudicator will be present to judge the students and the performance will be recorded. Finalist from years 4, 5, and 6 will be competing at the Rotary speaking competition next week, and netballers will compete in the Fowler Cup.
I attended my first P&C meeting on Wednesday evening. This was a good meeting and the committee are very focussed on how they can improve the school facilities and provide services that support the community to engage in education. Keep an eye out for activities and events that you can be involved in to support the school community and continue to make Edge Hill SS the great place it is for learning.
I also raised with the P&C a concern about some
negative and repeated interactions by a very small
number of parents who are not showing respect to
teachers and other staff when they are arriving to collect
children from school. We understand that sometimes
people are busy, or that they may be upset about
something that has occurred between students during
the school day. The staff here are dedicated to the safety
and wellbeing of everyone who attends and works at the
school. We make every effort to investigate and resolve
issues as they occur, and of course contact parents as
necessary. We ask that everyone remain calm and work
together for the best outcome when issues do occur.
This is a great model for students so they learn how to
manage their own problems. However, negative
behaviour from parents will not be tolerated. Posters
and messages about parent conduct will be put up in
classroom and around Admin to remind everyone what
we expect from you.

We have a School Council meeting coming up in Week 9. We currently have a vacancy for an appointed member on the school council.
The Edge Hill State School Council meets four times annually to support the broad strategic vision and direction of the school. The School Council monitors the school strategic plan, approves and monitors the implementation of strategic plans and policies of the school and provides advice to the Principal about the strategic direction of the school. The School Council membership is made up of the Principal and P&C President who are both official Members, an elected Staff Member, an elected Parent Member and two appointed members.
To be eligible for appointment as an appointed member, a person must:
a) not already be a member of the school council;
b) not have been convicted of an indictable offence, unless the Minister gives approval under the Act;
c) have knowledge and experience that would assist the school council to perform its functions; and
d) reflect the local community context.
The official and elected members present at a meeting of the school council may decide:
a) who is to be asked to become an appointed member; or
b) to seek nominations from persons wishing to become an appointed member, before deciding who is to be asked to become an appointed member.
A person becomes an appointed member of the school council if:
a) the school council asks the person to become an appointed member;
b) the person agrees to become an appointed member; and
c) the school council makes a decision to appoint the person at a school council meeting.
Each appointed member holds office for a term, not longer than two years, determined by the school council prior to deciding to appoint a person as an appointed member.
If you are interested in joining the school council please email an Expression of Interest to the Principal:
Next week (week 8) will be a short week with a Student Free Day on Friday 3rd of September. The last day of term will be September 17 - only 3 weeks away.
PREP, YEAR 1 & YEAR 2 NEWSPREP, YEAR 1 & YEAR 2 NEWS Book Week – Teachers made the week so much fun and engaging, dressing up as their favourite characters and
students sharing their favourite books. Students in 1B designed new covers for their favourite book.
Prep E & F Science: They made the best and most creative hats for either a rainy or a sunny day! They explained
what materials they used, the properties of the materials and why they were suitable for the hat they made.
Year 1 Fire Education:
On Wednesday we had a visit from the Cairns Fire Fighters to help us learn about fire safety. It was great to meet
our local fire officers and see what they look like when they are all dressed up in their protective gear.
Year 1 are learning to remember the fire safety rules and learning their address and what to say when they call 000. Fire safety is important. Do you have a fire evacuation plan at your home? The fire fighters will return in a few weeks so the children can see all their equipment, use the fire-hose and climb up into the fire truck. This visit was very timely, as the whole school practised a ‘lockdown’ and a ‘fire evacuation’ this week. Ask your child the difference between the two alarms.

The Prep cohort recently received a heap of new resources for their outdoor gross motor
program and lunchtime activities. Prep D tested out some of the new items on Fun
Friday at our weekly obstacle course. There was a new basketball hoop, scooter boards
and swing and trapeze sets and they were a real hit!
Our gross motor program has many benefits for developing
bodies such as:
• assisting confidence and self esteem
• boosting their ability to risk assess
• encourage physical literacy
• promote brain development
We are all very excited waiting for work to start on our new Prep playground. Watch this space!
Year 2 will conclude their Science Unit ‘All mixed up’ this term. They have investigated different mixtures and whether or not these mixtures can be separated. They have had lots of hands on experimenting with different liquids and ingredients. They will finish their unit with making ‘Rocky Road’. Students will use the following ingredients; milk chocolate, lolly snakes, smarties, marshmallows, coconut, icing sugar and rice bubbles. Once the ingredients have been combined in the mixture students will investigate whether they can be separated. After we have completed our investigation students will have the option to ‘eat’ their small portion.

Year 2 - BeeBots, Cubetto, and Algorithms made for some really exciting activities in the Innovation Centre. What a really fun time we all had learning about creating an algorithm for the Cubetto to move. Students used commands such as; forward, turn right, turn left, backward.

YEAR 3 & 4 NEWSYEAR 3 & 4 NEWS
Over the last couple of weeks, I have been presenting many Reading Challenge Certificates to Year 3
and 4 students. Congratulations to all of those students on a fantastic effort. This year’s Reading
Challenge theme has been “Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds”. The Reading Challenge is about
promoting and encouraging family reading and improving links between home and school. I trust that
you have been encouraging your child to read daily. The benefits of children reading every day are that it:
boosts vocabulary and literacy skills, improves writing skills, builds confidence and independence, broadens
minds and develops empathy, sparks imagination and stimulates curiosity. Readers are leaders!
Pokémon cards are quite popular at the moment. The messages we are giving students in relation to the
cards are:
• Students can go to the library during both breaks to ‘battle’ and/or look at
each other’s cards.
• If you bring Pokémon cards to school it is at your own risk
• NO trading / buying / giving away cards
• Cards must be kept in your bag during class time
• Teachers will not be dealing with lost or stolen cards or unfair “trades”
I had the pleasure of being invited to Year 3 classes to attend their
“Multiplication Fair”. It was wonderful to see how excited and proud the
students were to challenge their classmates and solve multiplication word
problems they had created themselves. Students had to use a number of
strategies to solve the problems. I encourage you to ask your child about
arrays, mad triangles, number lines and using manipulatives to represent
groups. Check out our Facebook page for more photos from the fairs.
Year 4s are really enjoying being back in the pool on Wednesdays and Fridays. The focus this term is Water
Safety and survival skills for deep water. Swimming is part of the Physical Education Curriculum and all students
are expected to participate. Please provide a note to the teacher if your child is unable to swim.

This semester Year 4 is doing a Health unit on strategies to keep healthy. We are predominantly looking at what is a balanced diet and why we need to have a balanced diet. This includes the five food groups in the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating and learning what each group gives our bodies. Students may at some stage bring home a record sheet of what they are eating in one week. Later in the unit we will also look at food labels and how to read the information contained on food packaging. You may want to discuss these and related concepts with your child. This unit is done sometime in semester 2 and classes will be at different stages at any particular time.
In English this term students are writing an imaginative text based around a cultural story. They are getting exceptionally good at using, ‘Show don’t tell,’ with compound sentences. This shows how a character is feeling and sets the mood of the story. For example, ‘I feel scared,’ is changed to, ‘My legs were shaking like a leaf and my heart was beating like a train.’ These types of sentences make their writing so much more exciting and it makes them excited to write too. Next the students are creating a multimodal text for their story. Images, illustrations they have created and from
a bank of images, are uploaded to Powerpoint. They then manipulate their images, considering the visual
elements to that match the mood of their text. If they want they can then add sound too! Using ICT’s in this way
makes for imaginative and interesting ways to meet the General Capability in our curriculum and students are so
proud of their polished published work.

YEAR 5 NEWS YEAR 5 NEWS
As the weather begins to warm, please make sure your child has applied sunscreen, has a hat and drink bottle to
stay hydrated throughout the day.
The Year 5 students are currently preparing and writing their poetry analysis where they identify language features and text structures within a poem and how this affects the audience. In Maths we have been learning about measurement including capacity, area, perimeter and volume. HASS has been busy with the Gold Rush and getting prepared for our end of term celebration for Gold Rush Day. Students are encouraged to dress up (not compulsory). In Bike Education, students have had the opportunity to go outside the school and ride their bikes safely using their new knowledge. In Science and Technology students have learnt about the International Space Station and how science inventions help us in our everyday life. Students have also been designing and creating their Mars Rover using pasta!
Today (31st of August), the year 5 teachers will be offering their Parent Teacher Interviews in the PAC.
As the term is quickly winding down, the year 5s should be working on their Awards of Excellence applications.
Some students will be earning their Bronze this term.
On 16th September, 2019 (Thursday week 10), we will be holding a Year 5 Gold Rush Day. This is part of our
semester 2 HASS program. The aims of the activities are to provide opportunities for students to experience life
as miners in the 1850s (around the time of the Eureka Stockade). Students are invited to dress up in a 1850s
style mining costume (European or Chinese) or like a governor, governor’s wife or an olden day trooper. Best
dressed awards for each class will be handed out on the day.

Last Tuesday, students began their dance collaboration with Cairns High School. By all accounts, all students
enjoyed their first session with the Year 10 students choreographing & teaching our classes. What amazing
progress was seen in just one lesson! We look forward to seeing more budding ‘dance stars’ this week!
Volcanoes have certainly been ‘on show’ within our cohort! Students have begun presenting their research on
their chosen volcano. We have observed some fantastic presentations so far! Some students have also created a
3D model, complete with an impending eruption! Some Year 6 classes are also creating a seismograph.
This term, students have been studying Author’s Style in English and are currently writing their assessment piece.
Students have been entertained with two stories by the same author, Elizabeth Honey. They will present their
findings within a panel discussion format and will be challenged with clarifying questions from other panellists.
.Jamie Gosling FNQ Schools Football Competition
We have so many keen football stars here at Edge Hill State School that we have been able to register three
teams into the Jamie Gosling Football Competition this year!
Teams will be travelling to the Holloways Beach Sporting Complex on Wednesday 1st September to compete
against other schools from across our region. Our school won the competition in its inaugural year in 2019 and
finished 3rd last year, so we are very excited to compete again and try to regain the title! Good luck to all
players, it will be a fantastic day for everyone involved.
Marlin Coast Netball Competition
We would like to wish our netball girls all the best in the upcoming Marlin Coast Netball
Competition on Thursday 2nd September. This competition is played by a huge number
of teams from across the region, from Tully to Weipa. Our school has had amazing success
in the past, winning it for 4 years in a row! Good luck to our teams for this year and your
quest to achieve 5 straight wins. We are sure you will have a great day whatever the result,
and represent your school with pride.
“Mini Roos” Football Program
Continuing with our soccer news, our grade 3 and 4 students have started training with the ‘Mini Roos’
Football Program on Thursday mornings. This program is running until the end of term and students are
learning the game of football in a modified game-based program delivered by qualified coaches. It is wonderful
to see so many students out on the oval before school participating in this program and enjoying being active.
Keep up the good work.

It has been fantastic to have all the choirs, ensembles and orchestras rehearsing again after 2 weeks off due to lockdown and restrictions.
Year 1 and 2 choir now rehearses every Monday morning in X block 8.10am-8.40am and the combined Year 3-6 (Gold and Maroon) choir rehearse every Wednesday morning 7.45am-8.45am in the Innovation centre from next week - Week 9.
This week will be the final week for the Gold and Maroon choir to rehearse separately.
as the Maroon choir will complete their Choral Fanfare journey on Thursday morning when they perform for adjudicators and videographers at St Monicas Cathedral. The adjudication and filming of each choir will not be in a ‘concert’ environment. Unfortunately, there will be no audience with each school asked to arrive at their set time, warm up, perform, be adjudicated, and leave the venue ensuring that we are abiding by all the relevant COVID guidelines. However, it is the finals and this choir have worked extremely hard to get there.
Thank you to the students and families involved in the Maroon choir for their patience and support throughout this competition.
Students are reminded that they arrive at school by 8.30am on Thursday dressed in their Maroon choir finals performance uniform. Plain black trousers, plain black shoes, plain black socks. If t-shirts are not available to pick up until Wednesday, we ask that students arrive in their usual school uniform shirts and they will be able to change at school. Students, please need to have packed their usual school uniform in their school bag a water bottle and a packed lunch with nothing in it that needs refrigeration.
Junior Concert Band rehearses every Monday morning 7.45-8.45am in the PAC. This band provides a performance platform for all beginner woodwind, brass and percussion students. Thank you to the music captains and Year 6 percussionists that have attended to assist these students with set up and routines.
Year 2 and 3 students will be given the opportunity in classroom music this week to bring home an expression of interest letter regarding joining our instrumental programs next year.
Year 2 students can choose a string instrument and Year 3 students a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument. If letters do not make it home please contact Miss Curtis on [email protected] and one will be sent electronically. Families are reminded that these are only an expression of interest and do not guarantee a place.
At the beginning of this term a mid-year recruitment took place for our woodwind and brass program. Unfortunately, due to teacher illness and restrictions this recruitment has still to be finalised. Successful students will be notified soon and will begin lessons next term.
Miss Curtis has been pleasantly surprised during musical rehearsals and is glad that students remembered most of the choreography and lyrics after 2 weeks off.
All rehearsals are on as normal and students are reminded to check the timetable on the music room window every Monday morning to ensure rehearsals are not missed.
Any questions or queries please contact Miss Curtis on [email protected].
Thank you The Music Department
