ISO 9001 VISION 2000 FOR IMET
On reaching its fourth year of activity, Imet,
Metra’s plant in Serravalle Scrivia, has also
achieved ISO 9001 VISION 2000 certifi cation.
Thanks to this certifi cation, it has become
possible to evaluate Imet’s performance
empirically.
The world-wide value of ISO 9001 VISION 2000
certifi cation, also enables the company
to qualify not only on an international level
but even globally, making it easier to open up
new outlets on all markets.
Established in 2000, Imet has specialised in the
production of small and medium-sized sections,
developing the furnishing sector in particular.
With the installation of its 1.850-ton
Innocenti press, the factory has now reached
a production capacity of 7.000 tonnes/year.
Having set up its production line from the very
start with equipment and systems capable of
meeting any construction need, and having
followed the Metra corporate philosophy, based
for years now on co-operation with architects
and designers, Imet has been able to seize the
opportunities offered by this market. It has
thus earned a position as a specialist in the
extrusion of sections for the furniture market
for both household and professional use.
SEPTEMBER AT THE FAIR
Metra has two appointments in its books
for the month of September: from 21st to
26th September the company will be at the
InnoTrans fair in Berlin, for the fi rst time,
presenting its large sections for railway
structures made with the 6,050-tonne
maxi-press.
The new Serie Modulsystem 45, on the other
hand, will be presented at the traditional
“Aluminium 2004” event in Essen, where
Metra will be present from 21st to 24th
September at stand XXX.
Settembre in fi era
VIBRATION-DAMPING SUPPORT FOR CAR
ENGINES
An original study conducted by the Metra
Engineering Department on technological
aspects in defi ning manufacturing materials.
Following is the fi nal chapter of the feasibility
study concerning a billet for fastening a motor-
car engine, to be connected to the top of the
engine.
Experimental stage – Description and
comments of the test results
The purpose of experiments was to investigate
the ability of the semi-fi nished piece to sustain
cold plastic deformation with a torsion angle
of 90°, distributed over various different axial
lengths, complying with the following two
requisites :
• The absence of failure cracks along
the surface of the stretch affected by the
deformation.
• Maintenance of the same levels of tensile
strength/compression strength normally
reached in the non-deformed material.
The experimental phase was conducted on 30
test pieces obtained from an extruded square
15 x 15 mm bar made of EN AW 6060 alloy.
The elongation performance of the material
was found to be decisive for the choice of the
metallurgical state T1. The latter provides
the best guarantee of the absence of cracks
produced by the cold plastic deformation,
which would otherwise be responsible for
subsequent irreparable fatigue-related damage
during use.
The full programme followed during the course
of the experiments is summarised in Table III,
which gives, for the 30 test pieces, the list of
machining processes and of destructive and
non-destructive tests carried out.
In referring to the table mentioned above
for further details, the variables taken into
consideration should be highlighted here:
• 2 different lengths of the stretch subjected
to torsion: 45 and 70 mm
• 3 identical test pieces with a torsion angle:
_ = 130°
• 3 identical test pieces with a torsion angle:
_ = 110°
• 4 identical test pieces with a torsion angle:
_ = 90°
• 2 identical test pieces with a torsion angle:
_ = 90° followed by tensile tests
• 6 test pieces for extensometric tests,
tensile only
All the test pieces subjected to torsion – that
is to say nos. 1 to 24 – were inspected using
the dye penetrant method. None of them were
found to have failure cracks.
Furthermore, the aim of the 130° and 110°
torsion tests was to introduce a reasonable
criterion for evaluating the safety margin
provided by said dye penetrant method. This
was because it is clear that a positive result of
the dye penetrant test after a torsion of 130°
or even of 110° would indicate an undeniable
safety margin by comparison with a positive
result obtained on the test pieces deformed by
90°.
The 130° and 110° torsion tests were carried
out fi rst, in order to enable the angle of
elastic return to be measured – it was found
to be 3° - so as to apply a torsion of 93° in the
subsequent tests 7 to 12 and 19 to 24.
As far as concerns the tensile strength of
the material already deformed by torsion, it
was found that all the test pieces subjected
to tensile stress – nos. 7, 8, 19 and 20 – were
affected by failure outside the stretch affected
by torsion. This means that the torsional
deformation does not lower the axial tensile
strength of the part affected by torsion.
A qualifi ed outside laboratory accredited by
SINAL as Offi cial Certifying Body was used for
carrying out the processing and the tests on
test pieces 1 to 26.
Test pieces 27 to 30, on the other hand, refer to
extensometric tensile tests carried out care of
METRA’s Quality Assurance Service.
Upon completion of the experiments, the semi-
fi nished item in question was considered fully
suitable for the required functions.

Fase di sperimentazione -
descrizione e commenti dei
risultati delle prove
Scopo della sperimentazione è sta-
to quello di verifi care l’ attitudine
del semilavorato a sostenere una
deformazione plastica a freddo
con angolo di torsione di 90°,
distribuito su diverse lunghezze
assiali, nel rispetto dei seguenti
due requisiti :
• l’assenza di cricche di rottura
lungo la superfi cie del tratto
interessato alla deformazione.
• Il mantenimento degli stessi
livelli di resistenza a trazione/
compressione normalmente
raggiunti nel materiale non
deformato.
La fase di sperimentazione è stata
condotta su 30 provini ricavati da
barra quadra 15 x 15 mm estrusa
in lega EN AW 6060 .
La prestazione di allungamento
del materiale si è rivelata deter-
minante per la scelta dello stato
metallurgico T1. Esso offre infatti
le maggiori garanzie di assenza
di cricche di rottura, prodotte dal-
la deformazione plastica a freddo,
cricche altrimenti responsabili di
successivo irreparabile danneggia-
mento a fatica durante l’esercizio.
Il programma completo seguìto nel
corso della sperimentazione è sin-
tetizzato in tabella 1, che per i 30
campioni riassume l’ elenco delle
lavorazioni meccaniche e delle pro-
ve svolte, distruttive e non.
Nel rimandare alla tabella citata per
maggiori dettagli si vuole qui eviden-
ziare le variabili prese in esame:
• 2 diverse lunghezze del tratto
soggetto a torsione: 45 e 70 mm
• 3 campioni identici con angolo
di torsione: = 130°
• 3 campioni identici con angolo
di torsione: = 110°
• 4 campioni identici con angolo
di torsione: = 90°
• 2 campioni identici con angolo
di torsione: = 90° seguite da
prove di trazione
• 6 campioni per prove
estensimetriche di sola trazione
Tutti i provini assoggettati a tor-
sione – cioè dal n° 1 al n° 24 – sono
stati ispezionati con il metodo dei
liquidi penetranti, e nessuno di essi
ha evidenziato cricche di rottura.
Inoltre con le prove di torsione a
130° e 110° si è voluto introdurre
un ragionevole criterio per la valu-
tazione del margine di sicurezza
offerto dal suddetto metodo dei
liquidi penetranti: è chiaro infatti
che un eventuale risultato positivo
della prova con liquidi penetranti,
dopo torsione a 130° o anche 110°,
fornisce un innegabile margine di
sicurezza nei confronti del risulta-
to positivo ottenuto sui campioni
deformati a 90°.
Le prove di torsione a 130° e 110°
sono state condotte per prime, onde
consentire la misura dell’ angolo di
ritorno elastico – risultato di 3° -
in modo da applicare la torsione
93° nelle successive prove 7÷12 e
19÷24.
Per quanto riguarda la resistenza
a trazione del materiale già defor-
mato a torsione, si è riscontrato
che tutti i provini trazionati – n°
7, 8, 19, 20 - hanno subìto rottura
al difuori del tratto interessato
alla torsione. Questo signifi ca che
la deformazione di torsione non
riduce la resistenza a trazione
assiale del tratto torsionato.
Per l’ esecuzione delle lavorazioni
e delle prove sui campioni da 1 a
26 ci si è avvalsi di un Laboratorio
esterno qualifi cato e accredidato
dall’ Ente SINAL come Certifi catore
uffi ciale, mentre i provini da 27 a
30 si riferiscono a prove estensi-
metriche di trazione svolte presso
METRA-Servizio Assicurazione di
Qualità.
Al termine di queste esperienze si
considera il semilavorato in ogget-
to pienamente idoneo alle funzioni
richieste.

ALUMINIUM FOR SPORT:
A WINNING CHOICE
Used for the fi rst time at the 1948 Olympic
Games in London to manufacture the Olympic
torch, over the years aluminium has gained a
role of extreme importance among materials
used in sports.
Appearance, strength, light weight, ductility
and resistance to corrosion are only a few
of the features of this light alloy, features
that have made it the ideal material for
implementing many projects, also of
worldwide importance, as is happening for the
forthcoming Olympic Games in Athens.
Factors such as the aerodynamic qualities of
the supports used during the competitions,
the combination of maximum strength and
minimum weight and resistance to friction
are all elements that contribute towards
conditioning the performance of an athlete.
They are thus often the factors capable of
making the difference between success and
failure and between a win and a defeat.
Used in over 80% of all sports and in over 45
different applications, aluminium has indeed
not been used only in the equipment required
for training and preparing athletes but also in
the transport of the competitors through the
Olympic Village and in the packaging used for
the food and drinks to be consumed during the
event.
To further highlight the importance that this
material is acquiring, the EAA (European
Aluminium Association), jointly with the Greek
Aluminium Association and with the support
of AAFG (Aluminium for Future Generations),
has devised and created www.alugames.org,
a dedicated site on the presence of this light
alloy in the Olympic Games. It is yet another
tool for getting to know and appreciate
a material as eclectic as aluminium, used
increasingly and more and more widespread in
all sorts of different fi elds … a material worthy
of a gold medal!
THE OLYMPIC TORCH
Andreas Varotsos, designer of the torch,
stated that the choice of aluminium combined
with olivewood was dictated by its unique
properties of lightness and malleability,
thanks to the ease with which it can be
assembled with other materials and to its
perfect colour, reminiscent of the underside
of the olive leaf, the shape of which inspired
the design of the torch.

DESIGN
INTELLIGENT LIGHT
Aluminium places all its virtues at the service
of light, giving rise to creations the aesthetic
qualities and performance of which are
unlikely to be obtained using other materials.
One example of this consists of the products
by Alive, a fi rm specialised in the design and
production of lamps.
Specifi cally, the Mini Main model (photo n° 1)
consists of a small strip with one light, that can
be used to illuminate equally well a home or an
exhibition area. The more complex model, the
Light Kit Main (photo n° 2), on the other hand,
is a three-phase strip system with three lights,
for surface mounting (oval or square) or fl ush-
mounting.
TRANSPORT
LORRIES ARE BECOMING LIGHTER
ALL THE TIME
Established in 1922 in Turin, Acerbi Viberti
is one of the leading fi rms in the transport
vehicle sector. Specialised in the production
of trailers, semi-trailers, tank vehicles,
dumpers and isothermal and refrigerated van
structures, the company opted some time
ago to increase the number of aluminium
structural components, thanks to the well-
known advantages in terms of light weight
and savings that using this alloy entails. In
particular, the vehicles in the photographs have
both structural parts and sideboards and rear
parts made with Metra aluminium extrusions.
The creation published here refers to the fi rm’s
presence at Transpotec (Verona, 22nd-25th
April 2004), where Acerbi Viberti exhibited
a panel presenting the Metra communication
campaign in their stand. The co-operation
between the two companies had the goal of
spreading knowledge of the technological
and advisory value of Metra. Thanks to its
investment in the 6,050-tonne maxi press,
Metra has become a valuable reference point
for the whole market.
AUTOMATION
RATIOMOTORS FOR INDUSTRIAL DOORS
Benincà, a fi rm specialising in the design and
manufacturing of mechanisms for operating
and opening doors and gates, has been on
the market for many years now. Aluminium is
particularly suitable for these applications, and
thanks to this alloy’s ability to withstand the
weather it is used both in the structure of the
mechanism and in several components, such as
the casings containing the equipment.

Luce intelligente
