Numbers 15, A Summary Of Israel’s Condition

• J. Vernon McGee says in his notes, • “Marching has turned to murmuring, • walking has turned to wandering, • witnessing has turned to wailing, • warring his turn to wobbling, • singing has turned to sighing,• and working has turned to wishing."

Page 8: Numbers 15-16, Presumptuous unintentional ignorance sin, grumbling, owning not possessing the land, bread dough, gathering sticks, blue tassel, snails, Korah's rebellion

Numbers 15, A Summary Of Israel’s Condition

• We now begin “the silent years”, the wasted years. • The whole chapter of Numbers 33 has the itinerary from Egypt

to the Promised Land, camp by camp. • NAU Joshua 5:5 For all the people who came out were

circumcised, but all the people who were born in the wilderness along the way as they came out of Egypt had not been circumcised.

• NAU Amos 5:25 "Did you present Me with sacrifices and grain offerings in the wilderness for forty years, O house of Israel? 26 "You also carried along Sikkuth your king and Kiyyun, your images, the star of your gods which you made for yourselves. 27 "Therefore, I will make you go into exile …

Numbers 15, A Summary Of Israel’s Condition

• NAU Acts 7:42 "But God turned away and delivered them up to serve the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, 'IT WAS NOT TO ME THAT YOU OFFERED VICTIMS AND SACRIFICES FORTY YEARS IN THE WILDERNESS, WAS IT, O HOUSE OF ISRAEL?

• Israel’s condition was uncircumcised, committed to idolatry, murmuring, grumbling, and complaining for 40 years, yet God will keep His promises.

• God's promise was delayed but not destroyed.

Page 10: Numbers 15-16, Presumptuous unintentional ignorance sin, grumbling, owning not possessing the land, bread dough, gathering sticks, blue tassel, snails, Korah's rebellion

Numbers 15:1, Owning The Land Does Not Mean Possessing It

• NAU Numbers 15:1 Now the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2 "Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, 'When you enter the land where you are to live, which I am giving you, 3 then make an offering by fire to the LORD, a burnt offering or a sacrifice to fulfill a special vow, or as a freewill offering or in your appointed times, to make a soothing aroma to the LORD, from the herd or from the flock.

• “When you enter the land… I am giving you”?• NAU Numbers 14:33 “…forty years in the wilderness…until

your corpses lie in the wilderness.”• Owning the land does not mean possessing it.• God is faithful

Page 11: Numbers 15-16, Presumptuous unintentional ignorance sin, grumbling, owning not possessing the land, bread dough, gathering sticks, blue tassel, snails, Korah's rebellion

Last Time, Numbers 14:8, Peaceful Possession Is Conditional.

• NAU Numbers 14:8 "If the LORD is pleased with us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us-- a land which flows with milk and honey.

• They absolutely own it already, God had already given it to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. (Genesis 15:7, 35:12)

• NAU Genesis 12:7 The LORD appeared to Abram and said, "To your descendants I will give this land.”

• NAU Genesis 13:15 for all the land which you see, I will give it to you and to your descendants forever.

• But the peaceful possession of it is conditional.

Page 12: Numbers 15-16, Presumptuous unintentional ignorance sin, grumbling, owning not possessing the land, bread dough, gathering sticks, blue tassel, snails, Korah's rebellion

Numbers 15:1-31, Israel’s Instructions When In The Land

• God's unilateral, unconditional promises are not contingent upon anything but God’s faithfulness.

• He is able, faithful, and He is a covenant keeper.• Last chapter He judged their sin again with 40

years of wandering. But that won’t keep them out of the land.

• We will study these regulations more later.

Numbers 15:14, Aliens With You

• NAU Numbers 15:14 'If an alien sojourns with you, or one who may be among you throughout your generations, and he wishes to make an offering by fire, as a soothing aroma to the LORD, just as you do so he shall do. 15 'As for the assembly, there shall be one statute for you and for the alien who sojourns with you, a perpetual statute throughout your generations; as you are, so shall the alien be before the LORD. 16 'There is to be one law and one ordinance for you and for the alien who sojourns with you.'“

• Jew and gentile alike can worship the LORD.

Page 14: Numbers 15-16, Presumptuous unintentional ignorance sin, grumbling, owning not possessing the land, bread dough, gathering sticks, blue tassel, snails, Korah's rebellion

Numbers 15:21, Bread Dough

• NAU Numbers 15:21 'From the first of your dough you shall give to the LORD an offering throughout your generations.

• Jerusalem Inspiration, “…The dough was given to the Priests ("Kohanim") since they were not given a portion of land of their own through which to sustain themselves. The job of the Kohanim was to educate the people and work in the Temple, thereby providing the people with religious sustenance. They were, in turn, provided with physical sustenance from the Nation. Such is one's existence in the Land of Israel – the physical and spiritual are continuously intertwined.”

• Jerusalem Photo Trivia, “Hot and fresh from the oven, a delight from Jerusalem's Machane Yehuda market, captured by Rebecca Kowalsky. You can almost taste it!...”

Numbers 15:22, Unintentional Sin

• NAU Numbers 15:22 'But when you unwittingly fail and do not observe all these commandments, which the LORD has spoken to Moses, 23 even all that the LORD has commanded you through Moses, from the day when the LORD gave commandment and onward throughout your generations, 24 then it shall be, if it is done unintentionally, without the knowledge of the congregation…

Numbers 15:22, Unintentional Sin

• NAU Numbers 15:22 'But when you unwittingly fail …• All sin requires a sacrificial offering, then, now, always.

Even sin committed unintentionally. • Any, every, failure to reflect God’s infinite holiness by

the creatures made in His image is a blasphemy. God is infinite and eternal so the punishment is also.

• NAU Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

• NAU James 2:10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.

KJV Numbers 15:28, “Sins Of Ignorance”

• KJV Numbers 15:28 And the priest shall make an atonement for the soul that sinneth ignorantly, when he sinneth by ignorance before the LORD, to make an atonement for him; and it shall be forgiven him.

• “Sins of ignorance” is a phrase that comes from the KJV only, and mostly from this chapter and Leviticus 4 and 5.

• We have a saying, “Ignorance of the law is no excuse.” You can test this yourself with the IRS, or the CHP.

• NAU John 3: 36, 18 …he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

• There is no "innocent native." (Acts 17:26-30)

Page 19: Numbers 15-16, Presumptuous unintentional ignorance sin, grumbling, owning not possessing the land, bread dough, gathering sticks, blue tassel, snails, Korah's rebellion

Numbers 15:30, Defiant, Presumptuous Sin

• NAU Numbers 15:30 'But the person who does anything defiantly, whether he is native or an alien, that one is blaspheming the LORD; and that person shall be cut off from among his people. 31 'Because he has despised the word of the LORD and has broken His commandment, that person shall be completely cut off; his guilt will be on him.'“

• NAS NET ... defiantly...• NKJ ...presumptuously....• ESV YLT ... with a high hand [literal] ...• Defiant, presumptuous sin has no means of escape.

Let’s Read Numbers 15:32-36

• Wow! “gathering sticks” is a capital offense!• How’s this strike your sense of justice?• How would you answer a critic charging God with injustice,

cruelty, and anger problems?• How about NAU Genesis 3:11 “... I commanded you not to

eat?"...The serpent deceived me, and I ate."... "I will greatly multiply Your pain in childbirth... Cursed is the ground because of you [Adam] ; In toil you will eat of it All the days of your life…. [Rom 6:23, James 2:10, Rev 21:8]

• KJV Ezekiel 18:20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die…• Some think Numbers 15:32-36 is the first execution, others

that it’s the first violation of the fourth commandment.

Biblical Blue Tassels

• NAU Numbers 15:38 "Speak to the sons of Israel, and tell them that they shall make for themselves tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and that they shall put on the tassel of each corner a cord of blue.

• Blue is a heavenly color, "Sky blue"

Numbers 15:38, Biblical Blue, foxnews.com

• JERUSALEM – An Israeli researcher says she has identified a nearly 2,000-year old textile that may contain a mysterious blue dye described in the Bible, one of the few remnants of the ancient color ever found. Naama Sukenik of Israel's Antiquities Authority said Tuesday that recent examination of a small woolen textile discovered in the 1950s found that the textile was colored with a dye from the Murex trunculus, a snail researchers believe was the source of the Biblical blue. Researchers and rabbis have long searched for the enigmatic color, called tekhelet in Hebrew. The Bible commands Jews to wear a blue fringe on their garments, but the dye was lost in antiquity. Sukenik examined the textile for a doctorate at Bar-Ilan University and published the finding at a Jerusalem conference Monday.

Tassels for Today, eliyah.com

• “According to Yahweh's word, the purpose for the tassel (Hebrew #6734 "Tsitsit" or plural "Tsit tsiyot") is for us to look upon it and remember all of Yahweh's commandments and do them. This is the primary purpose of the tassels.”

• “In this tassel, there are four sections of wraps. From right to left (as Hebrew reads), there are 10 wraps in the first section which corresponds to the Hebrew letter Yod. The second section has 5 wraps which is Heh. The third section, 6 wraps is Waw. And the fourth section is Heh once again with 5 wraps. This gives us the Tetragrammaton, Yahweh's name. …an alternative method of tying it to indicate the "613 commandments" in the law. However, the list of 613 was compiled by Rambam, a Jewish scholar who lived in the 12th century CE. Rambam authored the Mishneh Torah, a well known and often used commentary on the Talmud...”

Numbers 15:39, Tassels, Jerusalem Inspiration

• NAU Numbers 15:39 "It shall be a tassel for you to look at and remember all the commandments of the LORD, so as to do them and not follow after your own heart and your own eyes, after which you played the harlot,

• “…[T]he Hebrew month of Elul during which thousands of Jews are expected to visit Hebron and the Cave of Machpela. …one of the 10 days a year when Isaac and Rebecca's Hall, the area where they are buried, is open to Jews. Our forefathers and mothers were paradigms of prayer and the masses flock to their graves, whenever given the opportunity, to pour out their hearts to God.

Let’s Read Numbers 16:1-15

Page 31: Numbers 15-16, Presumptuous unintentional ignorance sin, grumbling, owning not possessing the land, bread dough, gathering sticks, blue tassel, snails, Korah's rebellion

Numbers 16:3, All Israel Is Holy

• NAU Numbers 16:3 They assembled together against Moses and Aaron, and said to them, "You have gone far enough, for all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is in their midst; so why do you exalt yourselves above the assembly of the LORD?“

• 2 true statements and a good question• NAU Deuteronomy 7:6 "For you are a holy people to the LORD

your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.

• God was in their midst. But God had proven that He wanted Moses to lead. Moses hadn’t “exalted,” he was humble. The rebels were just jealous.

Page 32: Numbers 15-16, Presumptuous unintentional ignorance sin, grumbling, owning not possessing the land, bread dough, gathering sticks, blue tassel, snails, Korah's rebellion

Numbers 16:4, True Humility

• NAU Numbers 16:4 When Moses heard this, he fell on his face;

• This was true humility before God in the presence of this great sin.

• Then Moses proposes a test, much like in, 1 Kings 18:24 • He is humble not like the false teachers, NAU Jude 1:11

Woe to them! For they have gone the way of Cain, and for pay they have rushed headlong into the error of Balaam, and perished in the rebellion of Korah.

• Moses makes no defense of himself, “but God.”

Page 33: Numbers 15-16, Presumptuous unintentional ignorance sin, grumbling, owning not possessing the land, bread dough, gathering sticks, blue tassel, snails, Korah's rebellion

Numbers 16:11, We Grumble Against The LORD

• NAU Numbers 16:11 "Therefore you and all your company are gathered together against the LORD; but as for Aaron, who is he that you grumble against him?

• In spite of our grumbling (or because of it?), God is going to shape

• us, we must “shine like• stars in the universe.”

Page 34: Numbers 15-16, Presumptuous unintentional ignorance sin, grumbling, owning not possessing the land, bread dough, gathering sticks, blue tassel, snails, Korah's rebellion

Numbers 16:11, We Grumble Against The LORD

• Dr. Ken Boa says in “Faceting”, “God sees each of our lives like a treasure, like a gem. He desires to separate the gem from the material in which it was found, clean it from the debris that still surrounds it and then polish it. Still, an amorphous stone is not brilliant. Faceting is the process by which the jeweler cuts his stones. The more of these facets, the more beautiful a stone becomes. But imagine being that stone! If God makes us beautiful by a faceting process, we’re going to have to imagine there will be quite a bit of pain involved. After the faceting, though, we become brilliant; and like any good jeweler, God sets us in a black velvet background to show us off. We live in that black velvet background now, a “crooked and depraved generation,” in which we must “shine like stars in the universe.” We do this by refusing to grumble and complain, so that we may “become blameless and pure, children of God without fault” (Philippians 2:14-15)…”

Page 35: Numbers 15-16, Presumptuous unintentional ignorance sin, grumbling, owning not possessing the land, bread dough, gathering sticks, blue tassel, snails, Korah's rebellion

Numbers 16:12, Dathan and Abiram

• NAU Numbers 16:12 Then Moses sent a summons to Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab; but they said, "We will not come up.

• This is a slap in Moses’ face, and a complete rejection of his authority.

• Then they make the absurd claim that he (not God) took them out of “a land flowing with milk and honey.”

Page 36: Numbers 15-16, Presumptuous unintentional ignorance sin, grumbling, owning not possessing the land, bread dough, gathering sticks, blue tassel, snails, Korah's rebellion

Numbers 16:14, “put out the eyes”

• NAU Numbers 16:14 …Would you put out the eyes of these men?...

• Dr Ryrie pg. 180, says, “…throwing dust in their eyes (this is the meaning of put out the eyes, vs. 14)…

• Others say it’s closer to our English, “Will you blind them to the truth”?

Numbers 16:18, Strange Fire Again

• NAU Numbers 16:18 So they each took his own censer and put fire on it, and laid incense on it; and they stood at the doorway of the tent of meeting, with Moses and Aaron.

• This is sincere religious practice, by devout men. But their offerings and religion brought them judgment.

Page 39: Numbers 15-16, Presumptuous unintentional ignorance sin, grumbling, owning not possessing the land, bread dough, gathering sticks, blue tassel, snails, Korah's rebellion

Numbers 16:19, God Appeared To All The Congregation

• NAU Numbers 16:19 Thus Korah assembled all the congregation against them at the doorway of the tent of meeting. And the glory of the LORD appeared to all the congregation.

• That must have been dramatic.• NAU Numbers 12:5 Then the LORD came down

in a pillar of cloud and stood at the doorway of the tent, and He called Aaron and Miriam. When they had both come forward,

Page 40: Numbers 15-16, Presumptuous unintentional ignorance sin, grumbling, owning not possessing the land, bread dough, gathering sticks, blue tassel, snails, Korah's rebellion

Numbers 16:25, Moses Goes To Them

• NAU Numbers 16:25 Then Moses arose and went to Dathan and Abiram, with the elders of Israel following him,

• Ya’ won’t come, OK I’ll bring the judgment to you.

• Apparently Korah and the elders scurried to there own tents.

Page 41: Numbers 15-16, Presumptuous unintentional ignorance sin, grumbling, owning not possessing the land, bread dough, gathering sticks, blue tassel, snails, Korah's rebellion

Numbers 16:32, Swallowed Them Up, And Their Households

• NAU Numbers 16:32 and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men who belonged to Korah with their possessions.

• Apparently Korah family was not involved, or with him.• NAU Numbers 26:10 and the earth opened its mouth and

swallowed them up along with Korah, when that company died, when the fire devoured 250 men, so that they became a warning. 11 The sons of Korah, however, did not die.

• NAU Psalm 42-88, 42:1 For the choir director. A Maskil of the sons of Korah…

Numbers 16:37, Presented Before The LORD, They Are Holy

• NAU Numbers 16:37…take up the censers out of the midst of the blaze, for they are holy; and you scatter the burning coals abroad. 38 "As for the censers of these men who have sinned at the cost of their lives, let them be made into hammered sheets for a plating of the altar, since they did present them before the LORD and they are holy…

• Has Christ presented you before the LORD, then you are Holy• NAU Philippians 1:6 For I am confident of this very thing, that

He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.

• NAU Jude 1:24 Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy,

Page 44: Numbers 15-16, Presumptuous unintentional ignorance sin, grumbling, owning not possessing the land, bread dough, gathering sticks, blue tassel, snails, Korah's rebellion

Numbers 16:41, The Next Day?

• NAU Numbers 16:41 But on the next day all the congregation of the sons of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron, saying, "You are the ones who have caused the death of the LORD'S people."

• Unbelievable!• Could God have made Korah’s punishment any

more dramatic?

Numbers 15:38, Phylacteries Found

• Nine newfound penny-sized pieces of parchment belonging to the Dead Sea Scrolls laid unopened for nearly six decades before they were rediscovered in Israel. The scrolls went unnoticed for years until one scholar came across them while searching through the Israel Antiquities Authority's (IAA) storerooms, the Times of Israel reported. "Either they didn’t realize that these were also scrolls, or they didn’t know how to open them," the IAA's head of artefact treatment and conservation Pnina Shor explained.... The tiny scrolls were found inside three phylacteries, small leather boxes with Biblical versus written on them (called tefillin) that are worn by Jews during their morning prayers. Their discoverer, Yonatan Adler, had the boxes scanned by an MRI at a hospital in Israel in hopes there would be

At least two dozen phylactery scrolls were discovered in the 1940s and 50 along with the rest of the Dead Sea Scrolls... "[I] found a number of fragments of tefillin cases from Qumran Cave 4, together with seven rolled-up [phylactery] slips," Adler told the Times of Israel.... The IAA has been tasked with the difficult job of unrolling the scrolls without damaging them. “We’re going to do it slowly, but we’ll first consult with all of our experts about how to go about this,” said Schor, who would not reveal when the process would start. “We need to do a lot of research before we start doing this.”...

• The tiny scrolls were found inside three phylacteries, small leather boxes with Biblical versus written on them (calledtefillin) that are worn by Jews during their morning prayers. Their discoverer, Yonatan Adler, had the boxes scanned by an MRI at a hospital in Israel in hopes there would be parchment inside.

• He was right.• Once unopened, the scrolls are expected to shed new light on the religious practices of the Jewish people during the Second Temple

Period between the years of 530 BC and 70, an era named for a holy place of worship for the Jewish people that was constructed by the builder of ancient Jerusalem King Herod. The Dome of the Rock stands today where the Second Temple purportedly once stood.

• At least two dozen phylactery scrolls were discovered in the 1940s and 50 along with the rest of the Dead Sea Scrolls in a limestone cave in the West Bank's Qumran in Israel.

• "[I] found a number of fragments of tefillin cases from Qumran Cave 4, together with seven rolled-up [phylactery] slips," Adler told the Times of Israel.

• Until now, the scrolls remained bound inside the phylacteries for approximately 2,000 years.• The IAA has been tasked with the difficult job of unrolling the scrolls without damaging them.• “We’re going to do it slowly, but we’ll first consult with all of our experts about how to go about this,” said Schor, who would not reveal

when the process would start. “We need to do a lot of research before we start doing this.”• Remains of more than 900 religious manuscripts were found in 11 caves near the Dead Sea in the 1940s and 50s in Qumran.• http://www.foxnews.com/science/2014/03/12/nine-unopened-dead-sea-scrolls-found/?intcmp=features

• Today's verse describes the commandment to give a portion of one's dough to the Priests ("Kohanim") in the Temple. This commandment went into effect only once the Jews entered the Land of Israel. The dough was given to the Kohanim since they were not given a portion of land of their own through which to sustain themselves. The job of the Kohanim was to educate the people and work in the Temple, thereby providing the people with religious sustenance. They were, in turn, provided with physical sustenance from the Nation. Such is one's existence in the Land of Israel – the physical and spiritual are continuously intertwined.
