• Israel’s condition was uncircumcised, committed to idolatry, murmuring, grumbling, and complaining for 40 years, yet God will keep His promises.

• God's promise was delayed but not destroyed.

Numbers 15:1, Owning The Land Does Not Mean Possessing It

• NAU Numbers 15:1 Now the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2 "Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, 'When you enter the land where you are to live, which I am giving you, 3 then make an offering by fire to the LORD, a burnt offering or a sacrifice to fulfill a special vow, or as a freewill offering or in your appointed times, to make a soothing aroma to the LORD, from the herd or from the flock.

• God's unilateral, unconditional promises are not contingent upon anything but God’s faithfulness.

• He is able, faithful, and He is a covenant keeper.• Last chapter He judged their sin again with 40

years of wandering. But that won’t keep them out of the land.

Numbers 15:14, Aliens With You

• NAU Numbers 15:14 'If an alien sojourns with you, or one who may be among you throughout your generations, and he wishes to make an offering by fire, as a soothing aroma to the LORD, just as you do so he shall do. 15 'As for the assembly, there shall be one statute for you and for the alien who sojourns with you, a perpetual statute throughout your generations; as you are, so shall the alien be before the LORD. 16 'There is to be one law and one ordinance for you and for the alien who sojourns with you.'“

Numbers 15:22, Unintentional Sin

• NAU Numbers 15:22 'But when you unwittingly fail and do not observe all these commandments, which the LORD has spoken to Moses, 23 even all that the LORD has commanded you through Moses, from the day when the LORD gave commandment and onward throughout your generations, 24 then it shall be, if it is done unintentionally, without the knowledge of the congregation…

Numbers 15:22, Unintentional Sin

• NAU Numbers 15:22 'But when you unwittingly fail …• All sin requires a sacrificial offering, then, now, always.

Even sin committed unintentionally. • Any, every, failure to reflect God’s infinite holiness by

the creatures made in His image is a blasphemy. God is infinite and eternal so the punishment is also.

• NAU Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

• NAU James 2:10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.

KJV Numbers 15:28, “Sins Of Ignorance”

• KJV Numbers 15:28 And the priest shall make an atonement for the soul that sinneth ignorantly, when he sinneth by ignorance before the LORD, to make an atonement for him; and it shall be forgiven him.

• “Sins of ignorance” is a phrase that comes from the KJV only, and mostly from this chapter and Leviticus 4 and 5.

• We have a saying, “Ignorance of the law is no excuse.” You can test this yourself with the IRS, or the CHP.

Numbers 15:30, Defiant, Presumptuous Sin

• KJV Ezekiel 18:20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die…• Some think Numbers 15:32-36 is the first execution, others

that it’s the first violation of the fourth commandment.

Let’s Read Numbers 16:1-15

Numbers 16:3, All Israel Is Holy

• NAU Numbers 16:3 They assembled together against Moses and Aaron, and said to them, "You have gone far enough, for all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is in their midst; so why do you exalt yourselves above the assembly of the LORD?“

• 2 true statements and a good question• NAU Deuteronomy 7:6 "For you are a holy people to the LORD

your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.

• God was in their midst. But God had proven that He wanted Moses to lead. Moses hadn’t “exalted,” he was humble. The rebels were just jealous.

Numbers 16:4, True Humility

• NAU Numbers 16:4 When Moses heard this, he fell on his face;

• This was true humility before God in the presence of this great sin.

• Then Moses proposes a test, much like in, 1 Kings 18:24 • He is humble not like the false teachers, NAU Jude 1:11

Woe to them! For they have gone the way of Cain, and for pay they have rushed headlong into the error of Balaam, and perished in the rebellion of Korah.

Numbers 16:11, We Grumble Against The LORD

• NAU Numbers 16:11 "Therefore you and all your company are gathered together against the LORD; but as for Aaron, who is he that you grumble against him?

• In spite of our grumbling (or because of it?), God is going to shape

• us, we must “shine like• stars in the universe.”

• Dr. Ken Boa says in “Faceting”, “God sees each of our lives like a treasure, like a gem. He desires to separate the gem from the material in which it was found, clean it from the debris that still surrounds it and then polish it. Still, an amorphous stone is not brilliant. Faceting is the process by which the jeweler cuts his stones. The more of these facets, the more beautiful a stone becomes. But imagine being that stone! If God makes us beautiful by a faceting process, we’re going to have to imagine there will be quite a bit of pain involved. After the faceting, though, we become brilliant; and like any good jeweler, God sets us in a black velvet background to show us off. We live in that black velvet background now, a “crooked and depraved generation,” in which we must “shine like stars in the universe.” We do this by refusing to grumble and complain, so that we may “become blameless and pure, children of God without fault” (Philippians 2:14-15)…”

Numbers 16:12, Dathan and Abiram

• NAU Numbers 16:12 Then Moses sent a summons to Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab; but they said, "We will not come up.

• This is a slap in Moses’ face, and a complete rejection of his authority.

• Then they make the absurd claim that he (not God) took them out of “a land flowing with milk and honey.”

Numbers 16:18, Strange Fire Again

• NAU Numbers 16:18 So they each took his own censer and put fire on it, and laid incense on it; and they stood at the doorway of the tent of meeting, with Moses and Aaron.

• This is sincere religious practice, by devout men. But their offerings and religion brought them judgment.

Numbers 16:19, God Appeared To All The Congregation

• NAU Numbers 16:19 Thus Korah assembled all the congregation against them at the doorway of the tent of meeting. And the glory of the LORD appeared to all the congregation.

cloth of blue and put on it the dishes and the pans and the sacrificial bowls and the jars for the drink offering, and the continual bread shall be on it.

• Today's verse describes the commandment to give a portion of one's dough to the Priests ("Kohanim") in the Temple. This commandment went into effect only once the Jews entered the Land of Israel. The dough was given to the Kohanim since they were not given a portion of land of their own through which to sustain themselves. The job of the Kohanim was to educate the people and work in the Temple, thereby providing the people with religious sustenance. They were, in turn, provided with physical sustenance from the Nation. Such is one's existence in the Land of Israel – the physical and spiritual are continuously intertwined.
