is probably why social media like Facebook are so popular.

It's true that Facebook has lots of different functionalities, but it will never be able to offer all

the advantages of face-to-face interaction. On Facebook you cannot shake hands when you

meet someone, smell the perfume they are wearing, or hug them when you want to.

With Facebook I was able to create a group in which I would be able to invite friends that I

couldn't see in a long time, like my old classmates, for example. And as we talked to each other,

I was getting more and more excited about the reunion day that was coming soon. Facebook

was excellent to make contact online, but online conversations can't compare to the ones we

used to have in real life.

Oh my God! Look at this house. What have you been doing?

You dont have toask my permission. You are old enough and you know what you do.

How can people stop Global warming?

Global warming is the phenomenon that happens when the temperature of the planet is higher than

usual. It happens most commonly because of greenhouse gases - carbon dioxide, water vapor, nitrous

    oxide, and methane.

'Friends of nature' in many countries are trying to stop global warming by doing things such as driving

cars with more than one person in it, for example. The objective would be to minimize the quantity of

  • 8/10/2019 NumberOne DO123and4

    4/73

gases produced by cars and liberated in the air.

In addition to that, some people are wasting less energy by turning off their TV sets, computers, lights

and all electronic equipment that are not being used. Taking the bus, walking to school, and riding

bicycles are also helpful ways to lower the quantity of greenhouse gases in the air. Planting trees and

recycling is important too. Maybe we can say that people are finally starting to pay proper attention

    to Mother Nature.

I don't like to get up early. Me neither.

Monday will be a beautiful day.

We'll have clear skies and sunshine all day.

It's a great day to be outside, sunny, hot and not a cloud in the sky all day.

We will have a high temperature of 21 degrees Celsius and a low of 11 degrees.

What would you do if you won the lottery?

If I won the lottery, I would buy a big farm.

You haven't finished your food. Neither have you.

5 Sandra: Thanks, but I still need to lose about 5 kilos.

6 Olivia: Only 5 kilos? That's easy. Just eat less and exercise a little every day.

7 Sandra: The problem is that I hate exercising. What kind of exercise do you recommend?

8 Olivia: If I were you I'd try exercising in the water. It is effective and very relaxing.

9 Sandra: All right, Olivia. I'll follow your advice. Take care.

Calvin: I dont have anything to do.

    What did Calvin say?

He said he didn't have anything to do.

Shop assistant: May I help you?

Customer: No, thanks. I'm just looking. The customer wants to buy something now.

    The customer is not polite.

The customer is not particularly interested in anything.

The customer is very rude and aggressive.

The customer is always the customer

It is a common slogan that "the customer is always right". That's just not true. The customer is

often wrong. Don't make yourself believe differently. Customers don't read instructions, they

don't read Web site service or product descriptions, they follow instructions incorrectly, theybreak things. They're often confused. In essence, the customer is not always right.

But the customer is still always the customer. Wrong customers buy things. Wrong customers

spend money. As business owners and business leaders, we want our companies to succeed.

Business success involves selling goods (products) and services to all customers, the right ones

and the wrong ones. Because all customers spend money, we want them to keep coming back,

    right or wrong.

A: Hey, Carlos. Do you like Ice Hockey?

B: Not really, it seems so aggressive.

The idea that you spend less when paying with cash has been around forever. There is just

something about actually seeing the cash leave your hand that has the ability to keep

spending in check. In fact, studies have confirmed that we tend to spend more when we pay

with credit than we do when we pay with cash.

While these studies suggest we should pay with cash, there is one big 'but' to keep in mind.

There are some things that we buy where cash versus credit won't make a bit of difference.

For example, I use a credit card to pay my cell phone bill each month, but I don't spend more

because I choose to use a credit card. I also use a credit card for gas, but I don't drive more

because of it. But for things like going out to eat, entertainment and shopping, many people

tend to spend less with cash.

    The Olympic Games

In 776 B.C. the early Olympic Games began in Greece. The winners were mentioned in poems

    and they were considered heroes.

To be present at the Games was of great importance. People from Italy, Sicily, Asia, Africa,

and Spain all made the long journey to Olympia. All the famous people of the time attended

the Games. Olympia was chosen as the place of the Games because it was considered as a

neutral area. It used to be the most sacred place for the adoration of Zeus, the supreme.

Another factor was that Olympia possessed a beautiful green valley and was accessed by two

    rivers.

In the beginning there was only one race. As time passed, other races and other sports were

    added.

    Doing it yourself

Are you planning on moving anytime soon? Which option to choose - to hire a professional

mover or to do the moving yourself? If you hire professional movers, they will be the ones who

are responsible for doing the packing, transportation and unloading of your stuff.

If you have decided to do the move yourself, it is important to be ready. You have to planeverything: from the materials used to pack until the very end of unpacking.

Your first worry should be to find a truck that can carry all your stuff. If you already have a

definite moving date, then have the truck reserved ahead of time. You also have to be

prepared with the cost and if you are moving for work, always ask your boss if they will cover

    the expenses of moving.

After getting your things inside the boxes, seal them and always attach a tag with information

about what is in each box. If you have fragile items, make sure they are firm and secured. Do

not forget to make an inventory (a written list) of your stuff.

    Suggestions for travelers

The number-one rule in choosing what to take with you when you travel is to take only

what you really need. You will be moving your baggage into your car, out of your car, off

of the baggage carousel, to the train station, to the bus stop, onto the bus, off the bus,up the stairs, and into your hotel room.

If you are going on a longer trip, pick one color. If you are part of Generation X, be

happy, as black travels very well. If you are traveling on business, you can probably

take two suits and rotate between them. Try to take different colors of shirts mixing andmatching may make people think you brought more clothes than you did. Take enoughunderwear for one week, or for the period of the trip plus two days.

Oh, one last thing. Include bad weather in your plans. It will happen, and everybody

there will say, "Oh, it almost never rains like this! This is very unusual weather." Inparticular, be prepared for it being colder than you expect.

    Making a decision

We have all been at a point in our lives where we have to make a difficult decision, and we just don't

know how. The question is, how can you be sure that it is the right decision, and how can you possibly

understand the result of something that is as unpredictable as life itself?

There is no right or wrong way when making a decision. The only thing you can do is make the best

decision at the time you have to do it. So what can make this period of time easier?

I think that one of the most difficult things to have is patience. We want to believe that we are in

control, but when we are stressed out we can sometimes feel weak. You need time to fully

understand it, and to come to a point where you can feel confident that the choice you are making is

    the right one.

Take your time and have patience. Sometimes we need to take a moment to stop, pause, and reflect

on something before moving forward, and there is nothing wrong with that.

A tipping guide for tourists in the US.

In the United States, tipping people in the service industry is a normal thing. If in a

restaurant, taking a taxi, receiving a haircut, or having bags delivered to a hotel room, it

is required to show that you are happy with a job well done. This also means that if the

service is not good, a tip could be less generous, or no tip at all.

Usually a good tip for a waiter is around 15 to 20% of the bill. You don't

have to tip people at fast food restaurants or convenience stores. At gas stations, you

may give a dollar to the worker if he washes the windshield and check your oil. A two

The two sides of Social Networks.

Posts, status updates, comments, instant messages, video uploads, tweets, and texts

have become a regular part of our kids' lives. In today's 24/7 digital world, kids are

logging on from everywhere, including smartphones, gaming devices, tablets, and

laptops, and many parents simply don't know what their kids are up to, not to mention

the social media they're using. By age 13, millions of kids are sharing experiences on

social networking sites like Facebook or MySpace.

There are many positives aspects to social media. It's a fun way for kids to

interact with friends. It can also be a great way to learn new things, collaborate with

others, express creativity, and safely experiment with identity. But the problem comes

when kids share their private thoughts, photos, videos, and personal information. These

revealing posts can become very public and last a long time. It is important to pay

attention to what you say or share on the internet.

    The birth of electronic mail.

Once upon a time, there was noelectronic mail. Then Ray Tomlinson came along. In 1971,

Tomlinson was working for a firm that had a contract with the U.S. Department of Defense tohelp in the development of ARPANET, an early network that later became the Internet.

Tomlinson combined two programs that transferred files among ARPANET computers around

the country in order to send messages through a network.

In 1972, Ray Tomlinson sent the first electronic message, now known as

e-mail, using the @ symbol to indicate the location or institution of the e-mail recipient.

Tomlinson, using a Model 33 Teletype device, understood that he needed to use a symbol
