Number Talks 101 Beginner's guide to implementing Number Talks in the K-5 classroom

Signals

“I have an answer.”

Student places thumb at chest for ONE idea; they will add a finger for each new idea.

“I have the same answer as … .”

Student will put their thumb and pinky up and move their hand back and forth pointing their thumb at themselves and their pinky at the person with the same answer.

Teacher’s Role

• Facilitator of problems

• Write answers and strategies on board

• Plan for day's number talks

• Be sure Number Talks only lasts 5-10 minutes

Suggestion: Set a

timer at first.

Where do I start?

• Using your Number Talks book, start at least one year below your grade level.

• Be prepared with all manipulatives.

• Be patient!

• Get ready to be AMAZED!

Why?

• Promotes early number sense

• Fosters mental math

• Develops strategies to understand and solve harder math problems

• Increases math vocabulary

• Gets students EXCITED about math

Number Talks prep

1. Find a location that allows for close proximity to your students for informal observations and interactions.

2. Provide appropriate WAIT TIME for majority of students to solve the problem.

3. ACCEPT, RESPECT, and CONSIDER all answers.

4. Encourage student communication.

Grades 2-5: Design and Organization

• These Number Talks are designed to elicit and foster specific computation strategies.

• As you implement Number Talks, start with small numbers that are age and grade-level appropriate.

o Focuses on the strategy instead of the magnitude of the numbers

o Allows students to build confidence in their mathematical ability

2nd Grade: Week 1

Procedure

Mon. Introduce signs. Show and demonstrate rekenreks. Play “Show Me” (choose a number and allow students to show how they see that number on their rekenrek).

Tues. Review signs. Play “Show Me.”

Wed. Simple addition equations: Show me an equation for ____ (give a number).

Thurs. Simple addition equations for 10: Show me an equation that equals 10.

Fri. Simple addition equations for 10: Show me an equation that equals 10.

2nd Grade: Week 2

Procedure

Mon.

Show and demonstrate rekenreks. Work with counting on, using one of the blocks on page 102. This will allow students to begin to verbalize how they saw the answer.

Tues. Doubles and near doubles: Use a block on page 108.

Wed. Making 10: Use a block on page 113.

Thurs. Making 10: Use a block on page 117.

Fri. Landmark or friendly numbers: Use a block from page 118.
