WESTERLY HIGH SCHOOL - CLASS OF ’64 ALUMNI BULLETIN W ’64 1 It seems to make no difference if we’re still working or we’ve already retired, for most of us our daily lives simply leave us with very little time to stay in touch; and except for those class reunions every five years or so, we often lose track of each other despite our best intentions. To rectify that we’ve created W ’64, a quarterly newsletter designed to let classmates stay connected and to keep everyone informed on our class project – the WHS Alumni Scholarship Fund, Inc. (read more about that on page 2). W ’64, which is created, written, published and distributed entirely by volunteers from our class, will be a Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter publication, with special editions as needed. To keep costs to a minimum, the full-color edition will be posted on the web electronically as a PDF file, as well as emailed to classmates. The web address for W ’64 is: http://whs64.posterous.com. Since it is only for classmates, a password will be required to view or post to the site. The password is: bulldog1964. A black-and-white version of the newsletter has been printed and mailed to those classmates who do not currently have email or who have not yet provided us with their email address. Since printing and mailing the newsletter is costly, our hope is that eventually W ‘64 can be published almost entirely on the web, but until then our goal is to make sure every classmate receives a copy. Please read the Q&A on page 8 to learn more about submitting your news, articles, pictures and suggestions, as well as the future plans for the newsletter. It has been a long standing tradition for the class celebrating its 50th graduation to present a gift during the high school’s graduation ceremonies, which in our case, will be in 2014. At our 45th reunion in September, Charlie Taylor presented the idea of establishing an ongoing scholarship fund as our class’s 50th reunion gift. Classmates who attended the Friday and Saturday reunion events endorsed the idea, and since then, much has been done on the project.

The intent is to establish the fund and then award a scholarship each year to a deserving graduating senior so that he or she could use it at a two- or four-year college, university, trade or specialized training institution. It would be need-based, and given to a student of average ability.

So far, here’s what’s been done on the scholarship project:

In October a group of classmates met to discuss the process of establishing the scholarship. Attorney Merrill K. Moone (acting pro bono) volunteered to set up a 501(c)(3) non-profit tax-exempt organization with the Rhode Island Secretary of State, as required by law. It

was also decided that going forward, the committee needed to: • establish a scholarship name, • elect Officers and a Board of Directors

(three minimum required), • set up bylaws (to be sent to the IRS),

and • establish scholarship criteria.

At the November meeting, Officers and a Board of Directors for the scholarship fund were elected. The officers are: President - Charles Taylor; Secretary - John Clemens; and Treasurer - John Gulino.

Board of Directors include: Charles Cofone; Susan (Sullivan) Brocato; Mary Lou Serra; and Jane (Nolan) Zurliene. In addition, John Gulino will also act as the “Agent” for filing the necessary yearly papers.

The committee voted to name the scholarship the WHS Alumni Scholarship Fund, Inc. In addition, preliminary discussions on how to fund the scholarship were begun.

Dick Koulbanis suggested establishing a quarterly classmate newsletter as a way to keep everyone up-to-date on the project; and Mary Bono has volunteered to assist with the newsletter’s artwork.

At the January meeting, Charlie Taylor reported that the paperwork had been filed with the State of Rhode Island to establish the scholarship group as a non-profit organization. Work was also begun on the bylaws.

At the February meeting, Charlene (Feraco) Miller was added to the Board of Directors. Discussion of the bylaws was continued.

W ’64 3

In March, the committee completed its work on the bylaws, with passage expected at the April meeting. Pat (Bello) Cimalore and Barbara (Jenkins) Bliven will head up a Budget Committee.

In addition, Charlie Taylor told the group that the scholarship fund’s tax-exempt status would be in place before the filing deadline for 2010 tax returns.

In April, Charlie Taylor made good on the pledge he made during the 45th reunion by giving the committee the scholarship’s first donation – a check for $1,000. The bylaws were passed; and at future meetings, the committee will be discussing the best approach to raise funds for the scholarship and welcomes any and all suggestions.

As the scholarship project progresses and as our 50th reunion approaches, we will keep everyone informed through the W ’64 newsletter. Please send your email address and your suggestions on the project to John Clemens at [email protected]. If electronic communication is not possible for you, please send your suggestions, along with your current mailing address and phone number to: John Clemens

A huge thank you goes to Ray Capalbo who helped with the bylaws, and made it possible for the committee to meet at the Bradford Citizens Club.

By Charles Taylor

At our reunion last year, the classmates who attended endorsed the idea of setting up a scholarship fund as our 50th anniversary class gift (see associated article on page 2). The goal is to raise $50,000 during the next five years, and to award the first scholarship to a 2014 graduating senior.

As president of the WHS Alumni

Scholarship Fund, Inc. (WASFI), I am pleased to report that so far the scholarship committee has accomplished the following:• WASFI has been registered with the state as a non-profit organization;• IRS has issued an Employer Identification Number (EIN) and the IRS application

to be considered a 501(c)(3) non-profit tax-exempt organization has been submitted;

• officers and a board of directors have been elected;• the committee has adopted bylaws, as required by the IRS;• a scholarship fund logo and stationary has been designed; and• checking and savings accounts have been established at the Westerly Credit Union.

Our goal over the next 12 months is to raise $10,000 for the scholarship fund. This is the base amount required to engage the services of the Rhode Island Foundation (or other firms) to eventually manage the endowment (scholarship) fund.

As I pledged at the reunion, on April 19, I presented my check for $1,000 to officially kick off our scholarship fund. I am appealing to each of you to help raise the remaining $9,000. This has been, and will continue to be a very ambitious project.

We have 13 classmates who have done an outstanding job moving this project forward; however, we need more people involved. We have to promote this scholarship fund throughout the community by conducting fundraisers, soliciting corporate donations and other contributions to meet our goal by 2014.

In the next issue of W ‘64 the scholarship committee will report on various fund raising approaches for classmates. We would also like your input on the best ways to do this and we welcome your participation. We can do this, if we do it as a united class.

Thank you.

By Jane (Nolan) Zurliene

As members of the Class of ’64 packed into the meeting room at Dylan’s on September 18 for a ‘Classmates Only’ gathering, you repeatedly heard, “Oh my God, is that you?”, “Where are you now?” and “What are you doing these days?” The party was a great way to begin our 45th reunion; and the hit of the evening was a picture of our ninth grade class.

Dick Koulbanis had the original photo enlarged so that everyone could see where they were in the picture, and who they were sitting next to on the bleachers. Between that and all of the yearbooks that got cracked open, there was a lot of reminiscing about the “good ol’ days.” Later that night, a class meeting was held to discuss the possibility of establishing a scholarship fund as the class’s 50th reunion gift to the high school, and the idea was endorsed (see page 2 for related story).

On Saturday night the reunion festivities continued as classmates and their spouses or dates got together at the Calabrese Club for more socializing, along with dinner and dancing. The outstanding meal was catered by one of our own classmates, John Smith. Many, many thanks to John for his culinary expertise – dinner was over the top! Once the music kicked into high gear there were shades of the old YMCA dances out on the floor, and everyone got a treat as they watched Sharon (Morris) Ornberg and her husband John. The Ornbergs dance competitively, and just watching them was worth coming to the reunion.

Speaking of other talented classmates, Mary Bono brought samples of her work, Jillian Barber displayed some of her sculpting, and Roberta (Mudge) Humbles had some samples of the new Rhode Island trivia game she created.

Since not all of the classmates attended both reunion events, a class meeting was also held on Saturday night to talk about the scholarship fund, and again those in attendance endorsed the idea. The evening ended too quickly with most saying, “See you at the 50th!” And as we look forward to the next five years, let’s see if we can get every classmate to join us in 2014 .

We thought it would be fun to ask a ‘Common Ground Question’ in each newsletter. If the question applies to you, we hope you’ll email or send your answer to us, and we’ll report the results in the next issue. We think that finding out what things we have in common, and reading about what others have done, will be a great way to bridge all those years since high school. To that end, our first Common Ground Question is this:

Email your response to: [email protected], or mail to: Richard Koulbanis, 16 Cove Rd., Westerly, RI 02891.

“Did you or your spouse / significant other serve in the military?” I f ‘Yes , ’ please tel l us the branch of service , how long served, and where you were stat ioned.

If you can’t identify everyone after 45 years, send us the number

of the picture in question, and read the answer in the next W’64.

Can I submit an article or story to W ʼ64, and what can the topic be? Can it have pictures?

We encourage article submissions and suggestions from classmates. The article or story can be up to 2,000 words. It may include pictures, charts, tables, graphs and even drawings. It can be on almost any topic you want. Here are some examples:

• A trip• Retirement• Health• Immediate family information • Personal experience• How-to• A humorous story• The Flood of 2010• A Recipe• A charity or non-profit

organization• Your business• A restaurant review• A product review (cars,

computers, etc.)• A book review• Human interest• An opinion piece• High school• Family• Almost anything, within reason….• Send submissions, comments, etc.

to: [email protected]. If you do not have a computer, mail your information to:

Richard Koulbanis 16 Cove Rd.Westerly, RI 02891

Can I submit a “Letter to the Editor,” and can it be anonymous if I want?

We encourage you to submit them. You can sign your name or request that your name be withheld. Just remember the “Rule of Thumb.”

What do you hope to accomplish with the newsletter?

In addition to passing on news and information, we also hope this newsletter will help classmates reconnect. After all, it’s been 45-years-plus since we all sat and gabbed in the cafeteria or swapped stories on the bleachers, and knew just about everything going on in each others lives. Since leaving WHS, a lot of life has happened – to all of us, and there’s simply no way to cover all of that ground in a few hours at the reunion.

I have a suggestion for the newsletter, who should I send it to?

Send any suggestions, or even criticism of the newsletter directly to [email protected]. We would like to see the newsletter be useful, informative and entertaining, and to do that, we need input from classmates.

Remind me, how do I get this newsletter?

There are two ways we will send you W ’64. First, and our preferred way, is by email as an attached Adobe PDF file. You can save, read or even

print it. Plus, all editions of the W ’64 will also be on the web at: http://whs64.posterous.com. Since the website is for classmates only, you will need to use the password: buldog1964.

If you do not have email, we will send it to you by U.S. Mail. However, the printed edition of W ’64 is only in BxW and costs money to print, while the electronic version has no associated costs. In addition, the website will include information that will not be available in print.

I like the Bulldog logo. Who created it?

The Bulldog logo for W ’64 is original clay artwork created for the newsletter by Mary Bono. We use a smaller version without the diamond at the end of articles and stories.

How can I contact classmates?

See the directory on pages 9-12: names, address, emails and phone (when provided).

Can I submit a question to Q & A about the newsletter, the website, or the WHS Alumni Scholarship Fund (WASFI)?

Yes. If it is a question about “The Class Gift,” WASFI or donations, I will ask one of the WASFI officers to respond. If it’s about the this newsletter, I will respond. And if I don’t know the answer, I’ll make it up. :-)

Where the Class of 1964 lives

There are 165 members of the Class of ‘64 still living. While most of the class members reside in New England, with many right here in Westerly, others have migrated as far as California, Florida and even Canada. Figure 1 on page 9 shows a map view of the dispersion.

A breakdown of where classmates reside shows: • 85 (51.5%) live in RI• 26 (15.8%) in CT• 11 (6.7%) in FL• 5 (3.0%) in MA• 4 (2.4%) in NH• 34 (20.6%) in all other locations

Of those residing in RI and CT, 62 (37.6%) live in the Westerly area (Westerly, Ashaway, Charlestown, Bradford, Stonington and Pawcatuck).

We have only 72 (43.6%) of classmates’ emails.

This list will be published annually in W ’64. It was lasted updated 4/2010.

In Memoriam 1964-2010

Do you know other

classmates who have

passed on?

While our class may be small, no one knows everyone. Some have moved away and some have lost touch, but we would like to acknowledge those who have passed on.

If you know of someone who has died, please email that information to John Clemens at: [email protected]

Our classmates 'In Memoriam' will be updated and published once a year.

Where are they now? Some classmates just seem to disappear. Are they in witness protection, abducted by aliens, or did they just drop out of sight?

Do you know where these classmates

are?

When people leave the area, it’s often hard to keep track of them. They get married, change their names, take new jobs, join the service, and are gone. Sometimes their families are no longer in the area either. Some classmates were only in the class a short time, and may not have made lasting friendships, others may have just lost touch. Some may have even passed away. The reality is that "things change," and the more time passes, the harder it may be to find someone..

If you know anything about the people listed on this page, please email that information to John Clemens at: [email protected]

By Mary Bono

I haven’t lived there since leaving for college, but it took decades before I stopped calling Westerly “home.” My brother and sister-in-law live in the house I grew up in; although they’ve made it very much their own, crossing the river and winding through town toward North Drive still feels like coming home. From Manhattan to Cape Cod, Brooklyn to New Jersey, I never left the time zone. The reunion committee lost track of me for a while, but found me in time for our 45th.

My career path has taken its own turns—with some dead ends and back-tracking. Graphic design, “fine” art, illustration, writing and handcrafts have each had their day; most of the time, they overlap. Crafting was prized, taught and practiced in my family. Except for my

computer, I still use the tools and skills I learned as a child.

Remember the kids’ summer reading contests at the library? The diorama set up in the big round bay? The paper token with your name on it—a tree, a bird, a sailboat—depending on the theme? Remember checking out armloads of books so you could move your boat from dock to lake, river, bridge and back, then around again—sporting a red dot, then a blue…an orange…a green? I’ve written a children’s book of my own now, and illustrated several more. With assignments dwindling (and after a flurry of holiday gift-making) I started making hats to sell. A Reading Rainbow program about recycling prompted me to cut up a few grocery bags and try crocheting strips; they made a strong, colorful fabric. A variety of “bag-bag” styles resulted. I sorted generations

of old buttons, sewing dozens to crocheted elastic cuffs. I began attending fairs and put some work online (snoozecrafts.etsy.com).

This January, I applied to the VIRTU Festival in Wilcox Park, played the “hometown girl” card, and won a spot. The festival runs May 29th-30th. I’ll be at booth 150, near the pond. I’m hoping for three things: good weather, huge crowds, and finding classmates’ faces among them—those newly familiar and those I’ll have to update on the spot. WHS’64 discounts? You bet!

Jack of all trades, master of some!

A wet day, a silly costume and a scaled-down display, with Tootsie Pops for the kids in the Trick-or-Treat cauldron.

Book illustrated in 3D for Dutton.

Button bracelets: metal, glass & wood.

A Bag-Bag, in recycled plastic.

My logo, reusing a crocheted illustration.
