Aris Shino placed first in the 120 lb. class with a 4-0 record, while Josh Baker was runner-up at 152 lbs. with a 3-1 mark. Placing third for Merino included Marcelino Baptista with a 4-1 mark at 120 lbs. and Leon Johnson with a 3-1 record at 132 lbs. Jaxson Hastings was fourth at 138 lbs., posting a 4-1 mark and Caylan Eagan was fourth in the 145 lb. class, also with a 4-1 record. Neither wrestler could place third because of a five match limit in the tournament. Also for the Rams, Ace Conger was 0-2 at 145 lbs., Nick Vollmer was 1-2 at 160 lbs. and Caleb Ramey was 0-2 at 170 lbs. “Shino and Baker both wrestled very well, and everyone else seems to be following their example,” said Merino Coach Nathan Schmidt. “It was another fun tournament. “We wrestled well and showed some improvement from the last week. The City of Sterling, Recreation Division will host the Denver Nuggets Basketball Skills Challenge on Sat., Dec. 22. The competition is free for all participants! This is a chance for young basketball enthusiasts to exhibit their skills. It has separate boys and girls divisions and is open to youth ages 7 through 14. (The participant’s age is determined as of April 30, 2013.) The Challenge will be held at the Sterling High School in Wally Post gym and will start at 10 a.m. sharp! Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. Participants must compete during the scheduled time of the competition. Late participants will not be allowed to compete! The Denver Nuggets Basketball Skills Challenge is a basketball competition that allows area youngsters to showcase their talents. Participant scores are based on timed shooting, passing accuracy, and their speed dribbling through an obstacle course. The top boy and girl from each age group will advance to the Sectional Competition. Sectional winners will advance to the Regional and National Competitions. Parents will need to sign a liability waiver and registration form for their youth to compete.
