    History

The story starts in 1928. At that time MrPoelman was a chemical engineer andworked in a workshop for manufacturingcostume jewellery. He developed a pleatedpaper filter to protect workers from collo-dion (a mixture of ether, nitrocellulose, andethyl alcohol. During an exhibition, the

military became very interested in the po-tential uses of the filter. Mr Poelman thenstarted manufacturing filters for breathingmasks for the French army.

The company ULTRAFILTRES POELMAN was created in 1930.

During the 1930s and 1940s, the com-pany developed filter papers for militaryand civilian use. Thus, in 1935-1936,ULTRAFILTRES POELMAN equipped theMaginot line with filters and then civilianshelters. At the same time, Mr Poelmanbecame interested in air filtration for indus-trial customers. Thus, in 1953, the first fil-

ters for glove boxes appeared (derivativesof military cartridges) and the first filtersin the shape of V-packs. These filters usedmini-pleats pleated paper technology.

In the same year, the company becameSCHNEIDER-POELMAN.1954 marked the start of a co-opera-tion with CEA (Commisariat à l’EnergieAtomique).

At the same time, 1950 saw the creationof an “air filtration” department within theSOCIÉTÉ FRANÇAISE D’ACETYLÈNE(SFA), a branch of Soudure AutogèneFrançaise (Air Liquide Group).

In 1959 development began on a mediabased upon glass fiber. Prior to the use ofglass fibers; flammable cellulosic paperwas used for filtration media.

Saint Gobain was entrusted by the CEA todevelop this media as the result of a fire ata fuel reprocessing site.

The manufacture of the first cells started atthe SFA factory in 1963.

In 1967, SOFILTRA was created, from

a merger between the companies SAINTGOBAIN TECHNIQUES NOUVELLES andSFA.

In 1976, in order to counteract foreigncompetition, requested by the Frenchadministration and EDF, SOFILTRA andSCHNEIDER-POELMAN merged to createSOFILTRA-POELMAN. This new companythen brought together all the experiencealready acquired over several years interms of air filtration in a nuclear environ-ment with, on the one hand, the cage-ins-talled V-pack filter technology developedby Schneider-Poelman, and, on the other

hand, a system of tight lock casing cellsinherited from Sofiltra.

In 1990, the Saint Gobain group soldSofiltra-Poleman to Camfil in order to focuson its core glass business. This merger for-med SOFILTRA-CAMFIL.In 1994, the company was renamedCAMFIL. Finally, in 2001, following thebuyout of the American company FARR,Camfil became CAMFIL FARR, the worldleader in air filtration.

Since the 1970s, the development ofCAMFIL FARR has accompanied the de-velopment of researches and of the frenchnuclear industry with the manufacture ofproducts like Sofilair, CTHEN filters, prefil-ters, settling tank canisters, carbon filtersand casings.

    From Poelman to Camfil Farr

From Zoéto the present dayThe story of nuclear power in France beganon 15th December 1948, when a teamof researchers led by Frédéric Joliot, wereawarded the Nobel prize for chemistry. They created the first French fuel cell, Zoé,by the fission of uranium atoms.

Zoé allowed initial studies to be carriedout on reactors, to produce radioelementsvital for research and to make all the mea-surements and all the experiments neededfor the design of the future fleet of Frenchnuclear reactors.

Since then, nuclear power has become areal industry with its specific points and itsspecific actors. These are involved in the

extraction of uranium ore, in the transfor-mation of this ore into enriched uranium,in the recycling of uranium or even, forexample, in the construction of nuclearpower stations or waste processing.

The main application of nuclear poweris for the production of electricity: Eightypercent of the electricity produced inFrance today comes from nuclear power.

However, with the progress of knowledge, new applications have appeared. So, to-day, nuclear power allows us to date, inparticular, natural phenomena thanks to

isotopic dating and offers a diagnostic pos-sibility thanks to medical imagery.

    History

    Main references

CAMFIL France was given the “AREVA Supplier” label for two years running.

In June 2010, AREVA awarded the CAMFIL company the “AREVA Supplier” labelduring an official ceremony.

With this label, created by the AREVA group in 2009, AREVA emphasized its tieswith partner companies that make a substantial contribution to the company’s suc-cess.

AREVA has renewed its trust in Camfil that had already been given this award theprevious year.

This label is based on nearly twenty five quality requirements and respect of sus-tainable development and competitiveness values.Investment in innovation and research as well as the attention given to safety, securi-ty and the environment were thus decisive points for the awarding of this distinction.

Far beyond Quality …a Sustainable DevelopmentPolicyThe Camfil FARR group declares its deter-mination to contribute every day to thequality of the air that we breathe andhas followed, for nearly half a century, the path of Sustainable Development. This approach can be seen in the settingup of a Sustainable Development Policy,Camfilcaring.

In 2009, the Camfil Farr group publishedthe First Sustainable Development Reportin the world on air filtration. This reportputs into words our response to the chal-lenges of air pollution and global warmingas well as the key focuses of the companyfor our employees, our clients and the

stakeholders. Therefore, it was quite natural for usto go beyond the system of QualityManagement.

    Quality – Safety – Environment – Energy

Sustainable Development PolicyThe Saint-Martin-Longueau factory set upan Environment Management System andobtained ISO 14001 certification as soonas 2003.

The specific aspects of the ISO 14001standard are dealt with through identifica-tion procedures for environmental aspects, regulatory monitoring, waste processing, and prevention of risk situations whichcomplete the pre-existing provisions of thequality management, continuous improve-ment and process mastery systems.

In the same approach, concerned with thehealth and safety of our personnel and thecompanies working on our production site,we set up a Safety Management System inaccordance with standard OHSAS 18001and based on the permanent reviewing ofour Single Document.

Finally, in accordance with our environ-

mental policy, many actions have been im-plemented since 2006 in order to improvethe energy performance of our productionsite. This will can be illustrated by the set-ting up of an Energy Management System and being awarded EN 16001  certifica-tion in May 2011.

All these Management systems have beenintegrated (QSEE) in order to steer them asefficiently as possible.

Guaranteed efficiencyDuring the design and the sizing of any item, it is essential to consider all the data foreach other item included in the filtration barrier.

For example, clamping equipment (tray, shafts, cams, etc.) is designed depending onthe mechanical performances of the filter components (frame, gasket, sealant, etc.). Theconsideration of all this data determines the sizing and the design of the casing gasketseat.

CAMFIL FARR designs, manufactures and controls all these items (filter, casing, anddamper) depending on the different requirements.

This ensures guaranteed results during in situ tests and the efficiency of the installationwhen operating.

N.B.: Our responsibility is expressly limited to all the CAMIL FARR model filtering barriers. In par ticular, it cannot,in any case, be claimed in the case of assembly with equipment from different brands.

    The Camfil Farr ADVANTAGES

The unique specifications of our equipment

Temperature resistanceConsidering the importance of filtration barriers, the French authorities wanted to catego-rise filters equipping certain filtration levels as “Important Security Items” (decree dated10 August 1984).

For this purpose, the CTHEN (Centre Technique Homologations des Equipements Nu-cléaires – Technical Center for Nuclear Equipment Accreditation) had the authority overaccreditation of the equipment. CAMFIL FARR developed products able to meet theserequirements.

Moreover, CAMFIL FARR carried out a series of tests with IRSN on a filtration barrier(casing + filter), based on the CTHEN specifications. During this programme, other dyna-mic tests (combination of pressure – temperature) at values higher than those imposedby the CTHEN specifications were also carried out. That way, verifications of the overalltightness (internal/external) of casings are made.

Now, only these tests allow CAMFIL FARR to guarantee the temperature resistance ofa complete filtration barrier (filter + casing).

A filtration barrier is an operational device installed in a ventilation network. It is composed of afiltering item (filter), its casing, platform, casing, and dampers.

Seismic resistanceThe tests are made on a vibrating table, and the seismic resistance calculations for ourequipment allow CAMFIL FARR to define the different components of the filtration barrier

items. In case of seismic, the wave induced is transmitted to the floor or the walls of buildings. These are transmitted to the casing via different anchor points.

The shock waves that the filtering item (filter) is subject to are different to those of thefloor. Actually, they result from the intrinsic characteristics of the casing, i.e. its geometry, its mass, its materials, etc. The same goes for the shock waves that the damper is sub-ject to.

In fact, shock waves to the filter or the damper are the results of the concatenation ofseismic spectres and the intrinsic characteristics of the casing.

That is why validating the seismic resistance of a filtration barrier or a damper can onlybe made taking into account the filter + casing combination.

The technical data for each of the items making up this filtering barrier are vital for thecalculations allowing us to validate the seismic resistance.

For over 40 years, CAMFIL FARR has capitalised on all this technical data (real tests andcalculations) in order to meet your requirements.

    CONTENTS

    GENERAL POINTS

    page 22

PRINCIPLESThe applications of VHE filters can beclassified in twov ery different categoriesdepending on therequired aim. Theseare:• obtaining an atmosphere witha very

    low numericalconcentration in particlesorin micro-organisms forthe manufac-tureof very delicateproducts;

    • arresting contaminants that aredange-rous forpeople, this is thecase withthenuclearindustry.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONSRELATINGTO VHEFILTERSTheFrench specifications defined in “Theguidefor theventilation of nuclearinstalla-tions” mentions that thedecontaminationfactormeasured on thebenchtest forVHEfilters willbe, at nominalairflow, higher

than 5000 (efficiency over 99.98%)according to the sodium fluoresceinaerosol method fora median of Ø 0.15 µm (AFNOR standard NFX 44-011) andthat theadmissible finalpressuredrop willnot belowerthan 1000Pa.

This guidealso mentions, forinstallations, that thedecontamination factormeasuredon receipt and during operating has tobehigherthan the valueset by thetechnicalspecifications and in nocase lower than1000 withthe sodium fluorescein test(NFM 62-303standard).

Uranine test: fluorimetric method themeasuring of whichconsists in samplingth e u r an ine ae ro sol u p st r eam an ddownstream of thetest filter, using twosampling filters, to extract the uraninefrom these filters by washing and totitratethe washing solutions by measuringtheirfluorescence. The penetration of thefilter is theratio of thetiters of the twosolutions.

TheVHE filters must havesuccessfullyundergonequalification tests carried outin a laboratory of the Atomic EnergyCommission (CEA)or the Institute ofRadioprotection and Nuclear Safety(IRSN). They should tobe the subject of“PerformanceGuarantee” sheets based ontheresults of thesetests whichcovertheefficiency, thepressuredropand mechani-cal, thermalresistance, etc.

SOFILAIR CTHEN have been developedto meet specifica- tions ( including, inparticular, dynamic thermal resistancetests) established by theTechnicalCentreforthe Accreditation of NuclearEquipment(CTHEN). The Camfil FARR Air filtersSOFILAIR CTHEN were the firstonestobe accreditedat200°C/2h by CTHEN.AMERICAN SPECIFICATIONS listed inthe US Nuclear Regulatory Commission

Regulatory Guide1.52stipulatethat VHEfilters – HEPA Filters – should complywith American standards ASME AG-1(formerly military standard MIL-F 51.079forfilterpaper)and MIL -F-51.068forthefilter itself. Thelatter, whichis related tothe American design withdeep pleats, imposes minimum DOP efficiency of99.97% with 0.3 m icr on p a r t ic les .Moreover, it mentions thecriteria fornon-flammability, humidity and temperatureresistancethat the filters haveto meet.Fornuclearapplications, theRegulatoryGuide1.52 imposes metalframes.

    T h e C amfi l F ARR VHE e xce e ds th erequirements of theFrenchand Americanstandards.

IRRADIATION RESISTANCEThemedia of ourVHE filters comply withthe American standard ASME AG1(MILF51079) whichallows us toguaranteetheirintegrity afteri rradiation (mechanicalresistance, tempe- rature resistance, waterresistance).

INTERNAL REQUALIFICATIONOurVHE filters are subject to completerequalification in theCAMFIL laboratory. This requalification includes alltheCEA orIRSN tests, humidity resistanceand atestforthe radiation resistanceof thesealants, gaskets and media. This regularrequalifi-cation allows us toguaranteethe integrityof ourfilters in extremeconditions.

    PRINCIPLES

The applications of VHE filters can beclassified in two very different categoriesdepending on the required aim. These are:• obtaining an atmosphere with a very

    low numerical concentration in particlesor in micro-organisms for the manufac-ture of very delicate products;

    • arresting contaminants that are dange-rous for people, this is the case with thenuclear industry.

    TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONSRELATING TO VHE FILTERS

The French specifications defined in “Theguide for the ventilation of nuclear installa-tions” mentions that the decontaminationfactor measured on the benchtest for VHE

filters will be, at nominal airflow, higherthan 5000 (efficiency over 99.98%) ac-cording to the sodium fluorescein aero-sol method for a median of Ø 0.15 µm(AFNOR standard NFX 44-011) and thatthe admissible final pressure drop will notbe lower than 1000 Pa.

This guide also mentions, for installations, that the decontamination factor measuredon receipt and during operating has to behigher than the value set by the technicalspecifications and in no case lower than1000 with the sodium fluorescein test(NF M 62-303 standard).

Uranine test:  fluorimetric method themeasuring of which consists in sam-pling the uranine aerosol upstream anddownstream of the test filter, using twosampling filters, to extract the uraninefrom these filters by washing and to ti-trate the washing solutions by measuringtheir fluorescence. The penetration of thefilter is the ratio of the titers of the twosolutions.

The VHE filters must have successfullyundergone qualification tests carriedout in a laboratory of the Atomic EnergyCommission (CEA) or the Institute ofRadioprotection and Nuclear Safety(IRSN). They should to be the subject of“Performance Guarantee” sheets based onthe results of these tests which cover theefficiency, the pressure drop and mechani-cal, thermal resistance, etc.

SOFILAIR CTHEN have been developedto meet specifications (including, in par-ticular, dynamic thermal resistance tests)established by the Technical Centre forthe Accreditation of Nuclear Equipment(CTHEN). The Camfil FARR Air filters SO-FILAIR CTHEN were the first ones to beaccredited at 200°C/2h by CTHEN.

    AMERICAN SPECIFICATIONS listed in

the US Nuclear Regulatory CommissionRegulatory Guide 1.52 stipulate that VHEfilters – HEPA Filters – should comply withAmerican standards ASME AG-1 (formerlymilitary standard MIL-F-51.079 for filterpaper) and MIL-F-51.068 for the filteritself. The latter, which is related to theAmerican design with deep pleats, im-poses minimum DOP efficiency of 99.97%with 0.3 micron particles. Moreover, itmentions the criteria for non-flammabi-lity, humidity and temperature resistancethat the filters have to meet. For nuclearapplications, the Regulatory Guide 1.52imposes metal frames.

The Camfil FARR VHE exceeds the re-quirements of the French and Americanstandards.

    IRRADIATION RESISTANCE

The media of our VHE filters complywith the American standard ASME AG1(MIL-F-51.079) which allows us to gua-rantee their integrity after irradiation

(mechanical resistance, temperature resis-tance, water resistance).

    INTERNAL REQUALIFICATION

Our VHE filters are subject to completerequalification in the CAMFIL laboratory. This requalification includes all the CEA orIRSN tests, humidity resistance and a testfor the radiation resistance of the sealants, gaskets and media. This regular requalifi-cation allows us to guarantee the integrityof our filters in extreme conditions.
