Our Recent ProjectsOur customers include utilities in 13 countries on four continents. Our versatile capabilities can be delivered across many reactor types.

Key projects

Darlington Retube & Refurbishment Project – CanadaThrough our partnership with Aecon, we are removing and replacing the 480 fuel channels in each of the site’s four CANDU reactors. The project includes detailed design and procurement services for reactor components and the design and construction of specialized tooling for the project. Once refurbished, the Ontario Power Generation (OPG) Darlington reactors will continue to provide approximately 20 percent of Ontario’s energy for an additional 30 years.

Cernavoda Safety Systems Upgrades – RomaniaFollowing the Fukushima accident in 2011, we installed and improved nuclear safety systems at the Cernavoda CANDU nuclear power plant as part of an industry-wide strategy to upgrade safety. Under two engineering procurement and construction contracts, we installed a reactor containment filtered venting system, passive autocatalytic recombiners and a hydrogen monitoring system. Nuclear power allows Romania to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by over 10 million tonnes each year.

Embalse Life Extension – ArgentinaIn 2011, we were awarded a contract by Nucleoelectrica Argentina Sociead Anonima (NA-SA) to extend the life of the Embalse CANDU reactor. We supplied the tools, procedures and engineering; and, beginning in 2015, NA-SA will carry out the fieldwork with technical support from our expert staff on-site and in Canada.

Pump Seal Replacement – USAExelon has chosen our precision-engineered, application-specific reactor recirculating pump seals to replace the aging seals at the two boiling water reactors (BWRs) at their LaSalle site. Exelon joins many other utilities around the world that have chosen to replace their original pump seals with our reliable and top-performing designs to increase operational safety, performance and reliability. Our seals typically provide continuous operation for two to three times longer than OEM seals, resulting in lower maintenance costs.

EC6: Generation III Technology

Built on the proven foundation of our successful CANDU nuclear technology, the Enhanced CANDU 6® (EC6®) has been updated to include the most recent safety and technical advances, including those that followed international analysis of the Fukushima accident. The 700-MWe class EC6 nuclear power plant passed its third and final phase of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) pre-licensing vendor design review in 2013 which confirmed no fundamental barriers to licensing the EC6 design in Canada.

With a design life of 60 years and an average lifetime capacity factor of more than 92 percent, the EC6 benefits from CANDU 6® proven design, construction and operation. It has a heavy water moderator and heavy water coolant/pressure-tube design and can be refueled on power.

Innovation to improve operations

From reducing plant downtime to improving plant operations and extending plant life, our product development team works with our customers to develop new strategies and products.

As an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) we rapidly develop solutions to operating issues as they emerge, simulating operating conditions and running diagnostics. We apply these solutions to our new reactor products, ensuring they are as safe, efficient, reliable and cost effective as possible.

CANDU technology: The natural choiceOwners of Canadian CANDU technology have supplied businesses and the public with safe, reliable, affordable and CO2-free energy for over 60 years. Fuelled with natural uranium, CANDU reactors are a key component of clean air energy programs. They represent over 20,000 MW of installed capacity and have some of the highest lifetime capacity factors around the world. CANDU reactors are well suited for countries with large, indigenous uranium reserves, seeking energy independence.

Unique fuel cycle capabilityOne of the unique features of CANDU technology is its ability to use alternate fuels such as recovered uranium (RU), mixed oxide and thorium. Its inherent high-neutron efficiency and on-power refuelling uniquely position it as the solution for customers exploring alternate fuels.

AFCR: Fuel Flexibility

The Advanced Fuel CANDU Reactor (AFCR™) has been uniquely designed with fuel flexibility at its heart. Working with our Chinese partners, we have optimized the proven CANDU core through very few design enhancements to operate using RU and thorium fuel. Both use our patented CANFLEX® fuel bundle for enhanced reactor performance and increased operating margin. In-reactor tests of natural uranium equivalent (NUE) fuel in China’s Qinshan reactors have proven the ability of CANDU reactor technology to adopt alternative fuels.

Alternative fuels including NUE, RU and thorium can significantly reduce a country’s reliance on natural uranium for nuclear power generation, as well as introduce new fuel resources in the cycle. RU from light water reactor (LWR) fleets can be used without re-enrichment in CANDU reactors. In this synergistic relationship, one AFCR can operate on the spent fuel of four LWRs.

In 2014, a Chinese Expert Panel reviewed the technology and recommended to “initiate the construction of AFCR to unlock and utilize its various advantages.”

CANMOX: Turning a liability into an asset

The MOX-ready EC6 incorporates incremental design changes that improve safety performance, fuel capability, economic competitiveness and operational flexibility. Coupled with CANMOX™ technology, the EC6 is a tailored, proven, MOX-capable solution for plutonium disposition that can be deployed without first-of-a-kind risk.

A safe, proven and economically competitive solution for plutonium lifecycle management, the MOX-ready EC6 has technically superior performance when compared to other thermal reactor technologies. The CANMOX solution uses secure and protected plutonium and depleted uranium, which is key to helping fulfill plutonium disposition objectives. It blends them into fuel pellets to be housed in CANFLEX fuel bundles which are then loaded into the reactor to create new power.
