We are excited for your arrival at Northwest University! Whether you are a commuter student or residential student, our four days of Orientation are all about welcoming you. Through Northwest University’s incredible legacy, you are joining a community of learners who are following the call of God in their lives. At Orientation, you will join the larger story of NU. Each day will focus on a different aspect of our mission of academic excellence, empowered engagement, and spiritual vitality!

As you prepare, this guide will help ensure that you receive the most critical information so that your experiences provide an enjoyable and successful transition into the NU community.

ORIENTATION: THE STORY OF NU AUGUST 21-24, 2014Just as each member of the NU community has a story to tell—and you do, too—your first days on campus will welcome you into the story of Northwest University. We believe this community is brought together for a purpose, and so we emphasize the uniqueness of our NU community and our distinct mission with each day of Orientation.

THURSDAY: The Welcoming Community Embracing the NU MissionThe first day of Orientation will help you get your bearings. Check in! Move In! Join in! You will find genuine hospitality at every turn. During one of our most meaningful traditions, the President’s Community Welcome, we worship together and introduce the people who will guide your way from here. Bring the whole family to the NU Community Picnic where you can enjoy good food and fellowship while meeting other students, peer leaders, faculty and staff.

FRIDAY: The Community of Academic Excellence Learning at NUThe second day of Orientation emphasizes NU’s purpose as a place of study, learning, and growth. Join with others for morning worship. Hear a message from our Provost about what it means to be a faith-informed community of learners. Our Friday activities focus on preparation for success in the academic environment—the very reason for which we are drawn together. In the afternoon, it’s time to say farewell to loved ones after taking the NU Community Photo. Fun events are planned into the evening!

SATURDAY: The Community of Empowered EngagementPlugging In at NUOur third day together focuses on finding your place. Opportunities exist at every corner to explore new interests, learn how you can impact others and discover NU students’ favorite spots in Kirkland. Whether you are looking for a place to lead, ministry to join, activity to pursue, or job to hold, you will find many ways to begin hearing where God is calling you now and in the future. Then in the evening, gather with your Orientation Group to explore the streets of downtown Kirkland while deciphering clues in NU’s well-loved Scavenger Challenge!

SUNDAY: The Community of Spiritual Vitality Worshipping Together at NUBefore diving into studies, the last day of Orientation focuses on setting our hearts on Christ for the year ahead. Connect with new friends and check out one of the many churches in the greater Seattle area. Join new and returning students in one of the most beloved traditions of community worship in our outdoor candlelight service of worship and prayer to commit ourselves and the year ahead to the Lord.

WELCOMING YOU TO NUORIENTATION LEADERSAwaiting your arrival is a team of over 60 current NU students who serve as volunteer Orientation Leaders. These leaders, or OL’s as we call them, are here to guide your transition to life at Northwest University. At any time, ask any of these friendly student leaders for assistance—they are eager to move you in, introduce new friends, and answer any questions you might have.

CAMPUS LIFEAt NU we believe faith and learning should be seamless and holistic. We seek to assist students in the integration of faith and learning through a broad range of programs, services, and experiences. Considering the effect of the total campus environment on a student’s personal, academic, and spiritual growth, we focus on how a student’s faith affects the decision-making and value-sorting in the circumstances of everyday life: roommates, study, leisure time, recreation, athletic competition, relationships, physical health, leadership, social activities, and self-discipline. Take advantage of this great community—immerse yourself in the Eagle experience!

RESIDENCE LIFEResidence Life exists for the purpose of building a community committed to the rewarding, challenging, and energizing work of living life well, together. We seek to serve, love, and care for each other in such a way that everyone would experience a deep sense of belonging. The Resident Assistants, Apartment Representatives, and other student leaders all provide leadership within our various student living areas. Know that you are being prayed for and have someone waiting to assist you, even in your residence hall! Get ready for a great year!

FOR FAMILYOrientation is a special time of celebration and a hallmark of transition in a student’s and family’s life. We look forward to having parents and family members join us for the first two days.

MEAL INFOOn the first day of Orientation, one of our great traditions is the NU Community Picnic dinner. Provided free of charge to your family, this meal marks a great community celebration! Other meals throughout Orientation are available for $5 (cash or credit/debit). For new students, all meals during Orientation are provided free of charge.

SIBLINGSWhile we do not plan specific activities for younger children, NU does have many fun opportunities for recreation including outdoor basketball and tennis courts, a sand volleyball court, open areas, and a 9-hole disc golf course.

FAREWELL TO FAMILYOn the afternoon of the second day, Friday, August 22, we facilitate a longstanding tradition, the annual NU Community Photo. This photo marks our farewell to family. From here, students continue with us through Orientation until classes begin on Monday.

1Arrive on CampusAll students begin with Check-In at the Health and Sciences Center (HSC). You will be greeted by welcoming Orientation Leaders who will guide your way to parking for the Check-In process.

Check-InAfter parking and arriving at the HSC, you will begin with Check-In during your assigned time. Walk through the building and follow the signs to each station. This convenient process will provide you with:
