Luke elected to Athletes’ CommissionAt the national championships, Luke Mansfield was elected to the AFF Athletes’ Commission, scoring the most votes (77) of the three athletes elected. The others are Claire Daniel from Queensland and Lucas Webber from Victoria.

Are fencing schools smarter?Maybe. Five leading fencing schools have made the top 10 in this year’s list of the top 100 NSW schools in HSC performance.

Sydney Girls High School, Sydney Boys High School, Abbotsleigh, Sydney Grammar and Reddam House all made the top 10 pub-lished in the Sydney Morning Herald. Pymble Ladies College and St Aloysius made the top 20.

We’d like to think it’s because fencers are smarter. Congratulations to all NSW fencers who sat their HSC this year and best wishes for achieving your dreams.

Andre blitzes ‘em in AmericaAndrey Tyshchenko went to Dallas, Texas, this month to compete in the North American Cup, a prestige event on the US fencing calendar. In veteran foil, he was unranked at the bottom of the start list of 53 fencers. In pools, he won four and lost two bouts to be ranked 16 going into the direct elimination rounds. He worked his way through the DE rounds to make the finals, winning his semi-final 10-9 and then the final 10-9 to win the gold medal.

Andre tells us: “It was a fantastic event. 41 pistes, nine with video reffing.”

His US gold medal crowned a successful year for Andre who is a regular NSW squads fencer. He won gold in veteran men’s foil at the Australian national championships in Canberra earlier this month and silver at the Japanese National Veterans Championships in November.

Sally’s Fighting Fit

With the holidays coming up (and already here for the lucky ones!) I thought it might be useful to know how you can stay healthy while travelling by air. Do you know you are allowed to take your own food onto planes? Eating healthily on your flight will see you arrive fresher and ready to enjoy your holiday. For a short flight, pack some:

fruit (apples, kiwi, berries)

veggies like carrots, celery, cucumber and capsicum

gluten free wholegrain brown rice crackers

gluten free muesli bars

little containers of hummous and/or tahini

(though dips aren’t always allowed through security)

a bag of activated nuts

a bag of salty Cobbs Organic popcorn

a little bit of dark chocolate

herbal tea (ask the flight attendant for hot water)

For a longer flight, take a little meal with you, like tinned wild Atlantic salmon with veggies and quinoa.

A good snack is South African biltong (dried meat). In Sydney, try the biltong the boys have at Simply the Best on Bourke Street in Surry Hills.

Just a reminder, drink an extra glass or two of water with dried foods, because dehydrated foods lack moisture, which we so badly need on already-dehydrating flights.

And don’t forget, you may have to bin left-over food items when you arrive at an inter-state airport.

NSWFA wishes all members a happy festive season and looks forward to welcoming fencers back to competition and training in 2014.

You don’t have to eat airline food!

To celebrate another successful year for NSW fencing, fencers and parents attended the NSWFA Gala Dinner again held in the pleasant surrounds of the Concord Golf Club.

FIE Rule ChangesThe FIE Congress in late November agreed on a number of changes to the FIE Rules which have been announced on the FIE website - www.fie/ch/download/letters/2013/urgent/19/fr/releve%20decisions%20cong%2013%20ang.pdf

Rule changes of immediate interest are:

be cut to two 3-minute periods. In team events, bouts will be reduced to 2 minutes. The idea behind the proposal is to cut down on the time it takes to complete the pools round and to encourage more action in bouts.

The AFF is convening a meeting with the Tournament Management Commission and the National Officiating Director early next year to consider the rule changes. In the meantime, fencers anticipating going to the Junior World Championships and their coaches should prepare for shorter bouts.

2014 CalendarNext year’s calendar is now available on the website.

2014 MembershipNSWFA membership renewal for 2014 will be available online at www.nswfencing.org.au from early January. Fencers are encouraged to renew their membership in January before the fencing season starts. The fee schedule for 2014 will be posted to the website shortly.

Centenary Celebrations A Year in Review

2013 has been a watershed year for The Swords Club, with the celebration of its Centenary and the bittersweet announcement of Vivienne’s retirement from coaching fencing.

The Centenary celebrations included The En Garde Exhibition, the fruition of two years collaboration between The Swords Club and Stanton Library to mark the centenary of the Club. This heritage exhibition, which formed part of the National Trust Heritage Festival, was opened by Jilly Gibson, the Mayor of North Sydney, in April. During its six-month display, more than 9500 people visited the Heritage Centre.

In July, 166 people joined in the celebrations at our Centenary Dinner at Olympic Park. It was a joyous event, with formal proceedings including a Centenary speech given by Craig Phillips, Secretary General, Australian Olympic Committee and a well executed Grand Salute performed by twelve (mostly junior) TSC members. Few could recall the last time when the Grand Salute had been performed, and TSC is proud that a new generation of fencers has been instilled with this fencing tradition.

The Nils Saksen Mixed Handicap Foil always marks the last fencing competition of the year for our members. As part of the Centenary celebrations, TSC hosted a morning tea for past members and associates during the 62nd anniversary of the competition. A viewing platform set up on the stage, enabled our guests to view the scope and talent of fencing within our Club whilst enjoying a scrumptious morning tea.

During 2013, The Swords Club featured in The Sydney Morning Herald, Sunday Telegraph, Mosman Daily, the FIE’s Newsletter, Escrime and NSW Art Gallery’s catalogue accompanying the art exhibition The Sydney Moderns.

Whilst these events and activities marked a significant milestone in the history of The Swords Club and Australian fencing, throughout the year we continued what we do best…fence. TSC fencers competed in NSW regional, State, National foil competitions and several members competed internationally. We presented public fencing workshops as part of school holiday programs and to school students studying PASS. Our nine coaches continued to coach individuals and groups throughout the week to the young and young at heart.

In the November issue of NSWFA Newsletter and La Riposte we paid tribute to the Vivienne Tucker, the Head Coach of The Swords Club since 1975. Vivienne’s contribution to The Swords Club and Australian fencing has been immeasurable. The culture within the Club is one of its key strengths and secret to longevity. A culture built around simply developing fencers to be their best and promote the sport at all levels. A formal event for Vivienne is scheduled for 2014.

The Swords Club has a rich and proud heritage, and we look forward to building on that legacy as we head into our next century. Thank you to all the people who supported, participated in, or simply extended their good wishes for our Centenary, your words and actions have been deeply encouraging.
