EMC Celerra NS-120

Comprehensive unified storage solutions withhigh-end features across the product family: NX4,NS-120, NS-480

Meeting the information-sharingchallengeThe Celerra unified product NS-120 is a dedicatednetwork server optimized for file and block access, delivering high-end features in a scalable, easy-to-use package.

Celerra unified storage systems deliver a single-boxblock and file solution offering a centralized pointof management for distributed environments. Thisenables you to dynamically grow, share, and cost-effectively manage multi-protocol file systems as wellas providing multi-protocol block access. Takeadvantage of simultaneous support for NFS and CIFSprotocols by letting Windows and Linux/UNIX clientsshare files using the DART (Data Access in RealTime) operating system’s sophisticated file-lockingmechanisms. Leverage iSCSI for Tier 2 blockapplications and even native Fibre Channel for high-bandwidth or latency-sensitive applications.

Celerra’s unified product offerings are ideal for thegrowing server virtualization space. Whether customerslook to VMware®, Microsoft Hyper-V™, or Xen-basedserver solutions, Celerra is fully certified for allsupported protocols to ensure successful deploymentsof virtualized infrastructures through all phases ofimplementation.

The advanced functionality features included with theCelerra unified storage platforms enable consolidationof file servers, direct-attached application storage, and even mission-critical block storage requirements, resulting in lower total cost of ownership (TCO) ofyour server and storage assets.

Flexible solutions to meet a widerange of requirementsCelerra unified storage platforms combine an IPstorage enclosure with integrated storage providingNAS, iSCSI, and Fibre Channel in a single packagedsolution. This approach offers the lowest acquisitioncost along with simple implementation and managementwithout sacrificing configurability options.

• Multi-protocol—NAS, (CIFS and NFS including NFSv4.1with pNFS support) connectivity

• Native Block Option for EMC CLARiiON® Fibre Channeland iSCSI connectivity

• One to two X-Blade configurations• Fibre Channel and ATA drive support• Block and file I/O, or combine the two with Celerra

MPFS for high-performance data-sharing applications• Performance/availability mode

Celerra unified storage platformsystem elementsThe Celerra unified storage platform is comprised ofone or more autonomous servers called X-Blades and astorage processor enclosure (SPE). The X-Bladescontrol data movement from the disks to the network. Each X-Blade houses two Intel processors and runsEMC’s DART operating system, designed and optimizedfor high-performance, multi-protocol network file andblock access.

The SPE manages the physical storage of the diskarrays. The SPE takes advantage of the industry-leading EMC UltraFlex™ technology and has twoindependent storage processors (SPs) that deliverdedicated, array-based processing power. Thecombination of the X-Blades with the SPE delivers theonly truly integrated, highly available, unified

offering based on industry-leading technologies.

Your choice of the most flexibleavailability optionsNS-120 can be deployed in several operating modesincluding primary/standby or primary/primary with N+1failover.

Primary/standby is designed for environments thatcannot tolerate any system downtime due to a hardwarefailure. In this mode, one of the X-Blades operates instandby mode while the primary one manages all of thedata movement between the network and storage. Insystems with greater than two X-Blades, one or moreblades can be configured as standby for the activeblades, providing a pool of blades for the highestlevels of availability. The standby blade(s)seamlessly take over the operation of any failingblade, delivering equal performance to the primarysystem after a failover, thus allowing the system tofully scale without concern for managing potentialresource constraints in the event of a failure.

Other environments that value performance overcontinuous availability can choose to operate theirdual X-Blade Celerra systems in primary/primary mode.Through a simple menu selection, both X-Blades can bemade available to handle unusually large loads anduser populations that can bring standard file serversto a virtual standstill.

Unequaled availability featuresWith the Celerra unified storage platform, no-compromise availability means non-stop file accessachieved through transparent, dynamic failover to ahot standby X-Blade. For information protection,Celerra unified systems offer EMC Celerra SnapSure™software for creating read-only/read-write copies offile systems and iSCSI LUNs. The snapshot can be usedfor online backups as well as quick recovery ofdeleted files. With the addition of Microsoft VolumeShadow Copy Services (VSS) integration, thiscapability is taken a step further, enabling the enduser to leverage the functionality in Windows XPclients to recover deleted files directly from theWindows Explorer user interface.

For an even higher degree of information protection,EMC Celerra Replicator™ creates an asynchronous point-in-time, read-only/read-write copy of a productionfile system on a local or geographically remoteCelerra system.

Native LUN replication, in the form of MirrorView™/Synchronous (MirrorView/S), is also supported foryour most critical data that requires zero-data-lossavailability in case of a disaster.
