NRG in California
Our Home in the WestCarlsbad is the home of the Solar and West divisions of NRG Energy, Inc., a Fortune 500 company that is investing in California and working hard to support the state’s leadership in reducing its reliance on traditional fossil fuels. NRG is the nation’s largest developer of solar power and is upgrading its natural gas facilities with modern, efficient generation with quick-start capability to back up intermittent renewable energy sources like solar and wind.
NRG has acquired or built over 2,000 megawatts (MW) of generating capacity in California (enough electricity to power nearly two million homes). NRG’s natural gas-fueled power plants are located in Carlsbad, El Segundo and Long Beach and combined they provide reliable generation that serves up to 1.5 million California homes. NRG owns and operates two of the largest solar facilities in the state; the 21 MW Blythe Solar
Generating Facility and the 45 MW Avenal Solar Generating Facility (co-owned with Eurus Energy). The Company also owns and operates thermal energy center facilities in San Diego and San Francisco that provide district heating and cooling services to almost 200 downtown buildings.
Investing in Cleaner EnergyNRG invested approximately $2 billion in renewables and repowering for California last year and the Company expects to invest another $2.8 billion in those areas in 2012.*
Repowering two existing natural gas facilities with more than 800 MWs of high efficiency natural gas-fueled power that can support renewables like wind and solar Took a lead investment role in the 392 MW Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System, the world’s largest solar thermal project, located in the California Mojave Desert
California Valley Solar Ranch

REV.04.2012
Started construction on the 250 MW photovoltaic California Valley Solar Ranch project in San Luis Obispo County, which is due online in 2012 and 2013 Began construction at the 66 MW Alpine Solar Project and the 26 MW Borrego Solar Project, which are both expected to be completed in 2012 Established partnerships with Psomas and Prologis to develop rooftop distributed solar projects at various locations in southern California
In addition, NRG acquired the 290 MW Agua Caliente Solar Project in Yuma County, Arizona, that will sell its power to Pacific Gas and Electric Company. When completed in 2014, Agua Caliente will supply more than 225,000 California homes with clean electricity, helping the state meet its renewable energy goals.
State LeadershipCalifornia is also a leader in the public adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) that will further America’s energy independence from imported oil and improve local air quality. NRG’s contributions with solar and modernized gas plants improve the overall impact of EVs by making them closer to true zero-emission vehicles. NRG also plans an ambitious rollout of a comprehensive public EV charging infrastructure in the next four years that will further accelerate the adoption of EVs.
In addition to pursuing solar, EV charging and repowering our existing gas facilities, NRG leads efforts on regulatory, market and environmental initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life across the region. For example, NRG participates in regional energy and sustainability planning through the University of San Diego’s Energy Policy Initiative Center (EPIC). EPIC works with San Diego’s regional planning agency, the San Diego Association of Governments, to positively influence the sustainability and energy planning process in San Diego County.
Community InvolvementNRG proudly funds numerous charitable organizations that serve local communities. Last year, the Company contributed nearly $600,000 to worthy non-profit organizations in California such as the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund, school districts and environmental groups.
Recent charitable partners include the California-based Semper Fi Fund that helps soldiers recover from the physical and emotional scars following life-altering injuries, and the El Segundo Education Foundation to fund sustainability initiatives for public schools (K-12).
Some other state organizations that received $25,000 or more funding in 2011 include:
Borrego Springs Unified School District
Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation
Partners in Education – Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce
National Society of Black Engineers
San Diego Food Bank
