But there will be no gloom for those who were in

anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt

the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in

the latter time he will make glorious the way of the

sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the

nations.

The people who walked in darkness

have seen a great light;

those who lived in a land of deep darkness—

on them light has shined.You have multiplied the nation,

you have increased its joy;

they rejoice before you

as with joy at the harvest,

as people exult when dividing plunder.

For the yoke of their burden,

and the bar across their shoulders,the rod of their oppressor,

you have broken as on the day of Midian.

For all the boots of the tramping warriors

and all the garments rolled in blood

shall be burned as fuel for the fire.

For a child has been born for us,

a son given to us;authority rests upon his shoulders;

and he is named

Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

(Isaiah 9:1-6, NRSV )

Praise the Judge of the World

A Psalm.

O sing to the Lord a new song,

for he has done marvellous things.His right hand and his holy arm

have gained him victory.

The Lord has made known his victory;

he has revealed his vindication in the sight of the

nations.

He has remembered his steadfast love and

faithfulness

to the house of Israel.

All the ends of the earth have seen

the victory of our God.

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth;

break forth into joyous song and sing praises.

Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre,with the lyre and the sound of melody.

With trumpets and the sound of the horn

make a joyful noise before the King,

the Lord. ( Psalm 98:1-6, NRSV )

Spiritual Blessings in Christ

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus

Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every

spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, just as he

chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world

to be holy and blameless before him in love. Hedestined us for adoption as his children through Jesus

Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, to

the praise of his glorious grace that he freely

 bestowed on us in the Beloved. ( Ephesians 1:3-6,

 NRSV )

Paul’s PrayerI have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and

your love towards all the saints, and for this reason I

do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember

you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord

Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a

spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know

him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened,you may know what is the hope to which he has

called you, what are the riches of his glorious

inheritance among the saints. ( Ephesians 1:15-18,

 NRSV )

The Boy Jesus in the Temple

Now every year his parents went to Jerusalem for

the festival of the Passover. And when he was twelve

years old, they went up as usual for the

festival. When the festival was ended and they started

to return, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem,

 but his parents did not know it. Assuming that he was

in the group of travellers, they went a day’s journey.

Then they started to look for him among their

relatives and friends. When they did not find him,

they returned to Jerusalem to search for him. After

three days they found him in the temple, sitting

among the teachers, listening to them and askingthem questions. And all who heard him were amazed

at his understanding and his answers. When his

 parents saw him they were astonished; and his

mother said to him, ‘Child, why have you treated us

like this? Look, your father and I have been searching

for you in great anxiety.’ He said to them, ‘Why were

you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?’ But they did not

understand what he said to them. Then he went down

with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to

them. His mother treasured all these things in her

heart.

And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in

divine and human favor. ( Luke 2:41-52, NRSV )
