PRESIDENT’S MESSAGETONY SHAWPresident - Queensland Rugby Union
On behalf of Queensland Rugby it is my great pleasure to welcome you to the first Buildcorp National Rugby Championship game between Brisbane City and Sydney Stars.
I welcome the visiting Sydney Stars team, staff and supporters to the spiritual home of Rugby in Queensland - Ballymore Stadium.
Australian Rugby has designed the NRC - a new domestic Rugby competition involving nine teams - to give players another link in their development pathway towards Super Rugby and ultimately Wallabies selection. Tonight’s game will be broadcast on FOX SPORTS.
Queensland’s two NRC teams – Brisbane City and Bond University Queensland Country – are both managed by Queensland Rugby and the team’s two head coaches are assistant coaches to the St.George
Queensland Reds, which ensures appropriate player development pathway outcomes for Queensland.
Brisbane City has a rich history and first played Queensland Country in 1902.
Many of the household names of Australian Rugby such as Mark Loane, Andrew Slack, and Michael Lynagh have worn the Brisbane City jersey. I was also proud to wear the Brisbane City colours on my way to higher representative Rugby honours.
Best of luck to both teams.
Go City!

COACH’S MESSAGENICK STILESHead Coach - Brisbane City
Welcome to Ballymore Stadium for the inaugural match of the Buildcorp National Rugby Championship. Tonight’s match is a historic occasion and one the team and Queensland Rugby Union are very excited about.
The NRC provides countless opportunities for the development of our great game. The excitement within Queensland Rugby and our team in the lead up to this game has been noticeable and will continue throughout the season as we strive to do our best for the development of Rugby in Brisbane, Queensland and ultimately Australia.
Brisbane City is a representative team with tremendous heritage, having played its first game against Ipswich way back in 1878.
Tonight we write a new chapter in the team’s history, with the first match of the NRC.
The team is a good mix of experienced Super Rugby players, looking to further develop their skills, and Queensland Premier Grade players with the talent and drive to further their pathway opportunities in Rugby.
Congratulations to all the players selected for the first match of the tournament . I have no doubt they will represent Brisbane City with pride and passion.

The opportunities for Australian Rugby’s brightest hidden talents to impress at the next level begin this evening, as Brisbane City take on the Sydney Stars in the inau-gural match of the Buildcorp National Rug-by Championship.
Whilst it is the first clash between the two teams, Brisbane City head coach Nick Stiles expressed his delight that the opening match of the competition is between Australian Rug-by’s oldest foes.
“It’s definitely a great way to start the com-petition, with the two traditional Rugby states and what is essentially their City sides going head to head,” Stiles said.
The NRC provides the deep pool of hidden talent within the Australian club Rugby scene the chance to thrive in a professional setting.
This prospect is potentially the most exciting aspect of the NRC, as players and coaches alike will be forced to adapt to the unique and unpredictable situation of having played very little Rugby with or against any of the oppo-sition teams.
“This competition is all about bringing in as-sistant coaches from club land and players that have come from outside the profession-al programs and giving them opportunities,” Stiles said.
“But it’s also unique in that you don’t really know what you’re up against because you haven’t reviewed two or three trials like you
can usually, so you’re going to be pretty blind in terms of the combinations between the players for both your own team and the op-position.”
Brisbane City will start arguably the most dy-namic forward pack in the competition, with three of the eight players having pulled on a Reds jersey the season.
The presence of Liam Gill and Jake Schatz in the backrow will cause plenty of headaches at breakdown time for the Stars, as they at-tempt to combat the presence of duo in both attack and defence.
“One of the real advantages that we have is that the spine of our side have all been in-volved with the Reds,” Stiles said.
“While our front row haven’t played for the Reds, they’ve all been a part of the setup and as well as Dave McDuling you’ve got Gill and Schatz who are all really strong players.”
Both teams will face some growing pains this evening as players from both sides figure out the natural kinks that come with very limited playing time together, but with the Stars fea-turing several Sydney University players that have enjoyed an extra week off after their first exit from the Shute Shield semi-finals since 2004, some enterprising Rugby is sure to take centre stage.

Brisbane City centre Toby White is the above definition personified.
“Toby is a prime example of why this compe-tition is so crucial,” Brisbane City head coach Nick Stiles explained.
“He’s been a standout for Easts for a number of years and won a premiership with them but until now hasn’t been able to get a chance at the next level for various reasons.”
A vital cog in the Easts side that won the 2013 Hospital Cup, White’s consistent play in the Number 13 jersey for the Tigers has been marred by constant injury woes since making his Premier Grade debut five years ago.
“I think one of the reasons I’ve really strug-gled to get to that next level is injuries,” White said.
“I was a part of the Reds Wider Training Squad when I first started playing Premier Grade but missed the chance to play through injury and it’s really been the same story every year since then.”
White’s potentially irresistible combination with Samu Kerevi will be one to watch for the home side, as their styles of play complement each other like vegemite and toast.
“Toby and Samu together are going to be an exciting combination to watch,” Stiles said.
“We saw what Samu can do at Super Rug-by level and when you combine his ability to
offload with the finesse and smarts of White, I think they’re going to be a good blend and they’ll really complement each other in their style of play.”
White’s time in training with Brisbane City over the past month has introduced him to the standards of professional Rugby, an eye-opening experience for the 24-year-old.
“It’s a lot different to club level,” White said.
“Training has been a lot harder and the fitness has been the toughest part of it all.
“The standards and expectations are higher because you have the Reds guys around and it makes you lift your standards as well, which has been really enjoyable so far.”
Through bad luck and a plethora of unfor-tunate timing, White has missed out on the chance to showcase his talent at the next level.
After five long years in which he has struggled to keep his body on the park, he finally gets that chance tonight.
