NORTHERN PACIFIC BECOMES FIRST RAILROADTO AUTOMATICALLY RECORD DEFECTIVE WHEELS

Westward freight trains entering Spokane yard allpass through a detector device in the track, which makessure that the wheel anges have not been chipped orbroken. Tested and thoroughly proven since 1960, thedevice also detects wheels which have become loosenedand shifted on the axle toward the center of the car, aswell as defective brake shoes which may be draggingalong the top of the rail. Although the method of detec-tion is not new,Northern Pacific takes pride in becomingthe first railroad to automatically record the results foreach train by a unique recording system conceived anddesigned by engineers in the Signal Department'splanning section at St. Paul.

Known as a ‘wheel checker,’ the device in the fieldconsists of a series of steel fingers with vertical spikesextending upward near the inside edge of the top of therail. Freight car wheels roll over these fingers in pass-ing through the detector and the ange of the wheel rollson an insulated part of the finger, depressing each one in

wheel tread sets off a warning in the detector. Thus, ifa piece is broken from the flange of a wheel, one of thefingers will not be properly depressed and its verticalspike will come in contact with the tread of the wheel.When a defect is discovered, the new recording systemrecords a special entry and sounds an alarm in the yard-master's office.

The new system is substantially self-monitoringalthough it does provide a visual indication to the traincrew on the incoming train. Lunar white indicators on a22-foot signal mast become continuously illuminatedwhen the train enters the detector, one unit facing ineach direction along the track so they may be observedby either the engine crew or the train crew in the ca-boose. If a defect is detected, these indicators com-mence to ash.

DINING CAR DEPARTMENT EARNS SANITATION AWARD

For the second consecutive year, a special citationhas been awarded to the Northern Pacific Railway by theUnited States Public Health Service. The award, inrecognition of excellent sanitation in the preparation,handling and serving of food, was presented recently toPresident Robert S. Macfarlane (center). james E.Woodruff, Sanitation Specialist of the Public HealthService's regional Kansas City, Missouri, office (left)made the presentation, while Superintendent of DiningCars W. F. Paar looks on. '7

Mr. Woodruff, representing Luther L. Terry, SurgeonGeneral of the United States,said that the NorthernPacific had received a rating in excess of the 95%needed to qualify. The rating was based on inspection ofall dining cars in use in 1961- inspections were con-ducted by Public Health Service personnel.
