Childhood  Trauma  –  a  prevalent    problem            in  the  US…  

! In  fact,  nearly  61%  of  males  and  51%  of  females  ages  12  to  24    report  more  than  one  trauma;c  event.        (Kessler et al., 1995)

! Up  to  93%  in  the  youth  jus;ce  system  experience  trauma.  

(Fairbank, Putnam, & Harris, 2007) (Finkelhor et al., 2005)

With  long-­‐term  affects  on  health  According  to  the  Adverse  Childhood  Experience  Study  (ACE),  children  who  experience  childhood  trauma  are  at  a  greater  risk  of  having  serious  adult  health  problems:  

4x to 12x more likely to abuse alcohol or drugs

2x to 4x more likely to smoke, have an STD or

poor health

1.4x more likely to be severely obese

They also are at greater risk of having serious heath problems including cancer, heart disease, depression and a higher risk for unintended pregnancy.

Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral

Therapy (TF-CBT)

•  Evidence based treatment.

•  Teaches stress management, cognitive processing, communication, problem solving, and safety.

Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)

•  Empirically-supported treatment.

•  Places emphasis on restoring the parent-child relationship.

Trauma-focused Integrated Play Therapy

(TF-IPT)

• Model well suited to young children ages 5 to 17.

•  Utilizes play and art therapies to enhance education and reparative work.

Trauma and Grief Component Therapy for Adolescents (TGCT-A)

•  Has been implemented and evaluated in the US and Internationally, with a broad variety groups including multi-racial and multi-ethnic adolescents

Child Adult Relationship Enhancement (CARE)
