NP Residency Programs Give Nurse Practitioners Clinical
Training In Their Field
A nurse practitioner can fill the role of a physician in many clinical and hospital positions.
This means that they can evaluate, diagnose and treat patients in the same manner as any doctor, and, just like doctors, are required to complete NP residency programs in their chosen field prior to graduating, and beginning their own practices.
By the time they have reached this point in their education, they are just as well trained as the doctors they will have mentoring their residency, and just as eager to give quality health care to the patients they will encounter.
How NP Residency Programs Work
By the time a nurse practitioner student will reach the NP residency programs level, they will have completed all clinical seminars and coursework to gain their Master’s or Doctorate degree in health care.
They also carry with them years of experience gained in the nursing field, so they will have more of an idea of what to expect during residency than most medical students will ever have.
They will be paired up with experienced physicians in their field of specialization, and will work side by side with them in all phases of the position they will be filling upon graduation.
Because most states would not otherwise allow anyone but a doctor to prescribe medicine to patients, nurse practitioners that complete NP residency programs are grandfathered in, proving their competency in handling prescription drugs and their knowledge about their use and effect on a patient’s health.
As part of their residency with a supervising physician, they will participate in every phase of treating patients, from evaluation through implementation of treatment plans, and will gain licensing to dispense drugs in the process.
A Look At California Nurse Residency Programs
Recent developments in the health situation for the population of California have led to the creation of the first ever NP residency programs to be utilized between major hospitals, health service organizations and insurance providers.
The growing number of unemployed residents, as well as an underserved immigrant population were major factors in deciding to allow students to participate in California nurse residency programs, under the supervision of physicians based in both urban and rural population centers.
This new program for nurse practitioners began this past January, and is experiencing unprecedented success.
New NP Residency Programs Available In New York
In cooperation with the Pain and Palliative Care Service of the New York Department Of Medicine, Master’s level nurse practitioners can now participate in an intensive New York nurse residency program designed exclusively for hospice nursing opportunities.
They will function as clinical experts in pain management, palliative care, cancer clinics and hospice care for terminally ill patients, and the counseling of their families.
Beyond the basic principles involved in such care, they will also participate in holistic programs, and bereavement counseling. In addition to attending upwards of 60 patients a month, participants in these NP residency programs will also have the opportunity to participate in rotations with psychiatry and behavioral medicine internships.
