3 NOWbdg: International - Education - Collaboration April 2013

COMPANY INTRODUCTION

4 NOWbdg: International - Education - Collaboration April 2013

Students are expected to create, investigate and apply, reflect, question, evaluate ideas, transfer knowledge to new situations, build teams, resolve conflict and contribute to cultural development.

Spaces must provide opportunities for students to interact to create differing learning settings with various furniture types in well grouped learning spaces, to be actively involved with their learning space to develop in all of these areas.

An effective Masterplan, underpinned by an enlightened pedagogical approach, informs sound stewardship of existing buildings and future development while steering the entire campus towards improved operational and energy efficiency.

The Masterplan is a vital tool to guide the physical development of the school within the vision, objectives and ambitions of its community.

NOWbdg’s extensive Masterplanning experience unlocks the full potential of projects before design and construction commence.

This adds tangible value to the project. By imagining the future school, new works can be strategically planned for maximum effect at each stage, as the school grows towards its ambitions.

NOWbdg are highly experienced in master planning for new educational facilities and in revising and updating mater plans for existing institutions. For example a detailed review of the campus’ approach to pedestrian and vehicular movement identifies the difference in safety needs between Junior and Senior students all coordinated within the vision for curricular and extra-curricular programs. The resulting Masterplan spatial and pedagogical principles give confidence to the development new and upgraded facilities.

Steep topography of the site directly effects the connections between departments and the school’s capacity to deliver their programs. A 3D Masterplan over multiple levels provides an understanding for consolidating learning areas to improve team teaching opportunities and efficiency of movement to key facilities for improved access.

NOWbdg brings a very high quality of Client Service and Design through :

INNOVATION… we provide innovative, thoughtful and resolved solutions with an acute environmental awareness for all projects.

EXPERIENCE… With nearly 30 years sector experience, over 20 years experience using 3D CADD technology, and 18 years of working with Primary and Secondary schools, each project design responds to user needs.

Our established Mumbai practice supports our ability to met strict budget and time limits to produce logical, efficient, delightful and user-centred facilities.

EXCELLENCE… The NOWbdg methodology achieves user-centred designs of maximum quality using smart primary structures, durable, low maintenance and elegant building forms, economic use of materials, intelligent interplay of natural light and low operational energy requirements.

‘Benefit from natural environment’‘Green’ is a modern buzz-word for the way we used to build beforetechnology made it easier to turn on an air conditioner rather than to open awindow, say Australian architect-couple Judith North & Neville Cowland of‘NOW Architecture’ in an interview with RANJANI GOVIND

GREEN BOND: Australian architect couple Judith North and NevilleCowland believe that one has to lend a physical identity to buildings.

This is the concluding part of the interview with Australian architects JudithNorth and Neville Cowland who were in India recently. The couple are beingcommissioned to design a sustainable office tower in Bangalore. Awards andaccolades are part of their professional lifestyle, just as their sustainablebuildings that talk of grabbing nature in all its glory in every aspect of brick-and-mortar.

“We are keen to form relationships with local businesses for joint ventureswhich would benefit from the added depth provided by the differentbackgrounds and knowledge bases,” said Judith and Neville, who are lookingforward to creating an international team to work on one of their projectshere.

Are green projects more for the ‘upper economic segment’ or directedat realising rich, sustainable values?

Green building is not an ‘exclusive’ way of building. It is less about cutting-edge technology and more about rediscovering that buildings can be designed

to benefit from their natural environment — climate, sun, topography andwinds. ‘Green’ is a modern buzz-word for the way we used to build beforetechnology made it easier to turn on an air conditioner rather than to open awindow! Of course technology is a great ally to sustainable building, allowingus to create energy from the sun, force air through buildings, control electriclights, and generally make us more comfortable, but it is not a solution initself. A well designed and well-oriented building with no ‘expensive’technologies will perform better and at less cost than a poorly-orientedbuilding full of gadgets.

Mr. Neville, your ‘green star professional’ status...

I have undertaken a training course and professional exam which qualifies meto analyse and ‘rate’ the performance of buildings to ascertain how efficientthey are under the Greenstar rating system. This rating system isadministered by the Green Building Council of Australia and is essentially alocalised version of the LEED system, just as the LEED system has beenlocalised to Indian conditions and is administered by the Indian GreenBuilding Council. I have also undertaken a training course for the Indian LEEDsystem.

These rating systems are specific to building types and locations and areinternationally recognised which allows buildings around the world to becompared on the same footing for their environmental performance. A widespectrum of criteria is involved, arranged under eight categories ofmanagement, indoor environment quality, energy, transport, water, land useand ecology, materials, and emissions.

Ms. Judith, your study in ‘low energy vernacular architecture’?

I studied the topic because of a genuine interest and belief in the skills andknowledge demonstrated in vernacular buildings. At the heart of it, it is asimple concept embedded in common sense which says we should not buildthe same way in a desert that we would in a tropical environment or on acold mountain. Vernacular buildings look different in different regions for thesimple reason that they function differently for their environment. Whyshouldn’t office buildings or institutional buildings respond in the same way?

And your unique features…passive solar design; controlled naturallighting; spatial and the physical identity you lend to your buildings…

Passive solar design is the most fundamental part of ‘green’ design. It isabout designing a building in such as way that it retains a comfortableinternal temperature without the need for ‘active’ systems such as air-conditioning. By correctly orienting the building and shade devices, theamount of sunlight and the time when sunlight can enter a building can becontrolled. Because the angle of the sun changes throughout the year, correctdesign of shading systems can let sunlight enter the building in wintermonths, but keep it out in summer.

Also, appropriate landscaping around a building can also improve the micro-climate, shade building walls and cool air before it reaches a building byintroducing pools and ponds.

This is the essence of passive cooling — that warm air is passed over acooling element (such as a natural water body, cool rocks or a man-madesystem of water pipes) before it enters a building, bringing cooler air.

Controlled natural lighting is ‘intelligent interplay of light.’ Natural light ismore desirable in all cases to artificial light and we must look for ways tomaximise its distribution through a building. Roof lights, appropriately-sizedwindows, reflective surfaces and glass internal partitions can all help thedistribution of light.

The form and plan of the building also play an important part in respondingto natural daylighting.

All NOW Architecture buildings and master plans seek to create a sense ofplace. We seek to impart the individual essence of the location to the project, the site context and a cultural value. This means, firstly, that users andvisitors of the building should have a feeling that they have arrivedsomewhere, that the building is a unique destination which expresses thosecultural values. Users should also have a feeling that they belong in thatplace.

Does the building speak of history or modern progress, or both? Is it anoasis, a landmark, an icon, a retreat? How a building feels is a complexrelationship of ideas, but critical to making it a place with its own identity, rather than just another building.

to benefit from their natural environment — climate, sun, topography andwinds.

Occupants should have an awareness of the outside world while they are inthe building and continue to be able to identify with the broader context ofwhere they are. Is a building identified by the company that works there, thematerials it is made from, its height, its setting, or a mix of all these?

Modern technology allows us to computer-model buildings at the early designstage to test daylighting, solar shading, ventilation and thermal performance,to assess options for the most effective design.

We see this as an integrated architectural design approach rather than havingan engineering solution added after the design is completed.

6 QUALITY & RISK MANAGEMENT

NOWbdg’s Quality and OH&S procedures have been audited and passed in an external second party process under ISO 9001. These quality and safety processes are inextricably linked to the Client Briefing process and Project delivery. We take our legal and ethical responsibilities in these areas very seriously, recognising their positive effect on project outcomes.

The extensive folio of work, record of delighted Clients and many professional accolades demonstrate our ability to deliver high quality, cost effective and unique buildings that meet and exceed expectations.

All work is carried out on high-end computer systems which integrate 2-dimensional planning with 3-dimensional modelling from the earliest design stages. This dramatically increases our efficiency over other practices who typically separate 2D and 3D design.

We address possible design risk as required by formal Risk identification Registers, as per Section 28 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 and in Client review meetings.

As essential part of our audited systems in continual improvement of our rigorous and effective administration procedures.

Computerised Architectural Management system AIM (Architecture Information Management) is a core part of our Quality Assurance system which maintains comprehensive records of all expenditure, time, decisions, commitments, instructions and verbal communications relating to every aspect of projects.

“Both Neville and Judith were eager to work with staff, willing to listen to all suggestions and keen to provide practical advice and guidance...their attention to detail has been exemplary [and] their dealings with the builder have been most professional.”

7 SUSTAINABILITY: Targets, Savings and Health

Natural daylight, air and low-e lighting

NOWbdg have received local, national and international recognition for practical and effective Sustainable Design solutions. We have repeatedly delivered effective natural daylighting, ventilation and radiant heating systems within low construction budgets.

”Healthy buildings provide a safe and secure physical structure that helps occupants maintain their health and well-being through improved indoor air quality.” EPA

What difference does Sustainable Design make?

Environmentally Sustainable buildings provide important health and comfort benefits for Staff and Children:• Sick days are reduced• Productivity and learning are increased• Staff retention is improved• Asthma is reduced• Colds and Flu are reduced• Water usage is reduced• Greenhouse gas emissions are reduced• Operation and Maintenance costs are

significantly reduced

Thoughtful building orientation and shading protect students and all users from UV exposure.

The benefits of northern orientation are maximised and design solutions are integrated with the surrounding environment.

Sheltered landscaped outdoor activity spaces support learning programs and diversify opportunities both within and beyond the curriculum.

Courtyards also provide flexible activity spaces for Community events and enhance the presentation to the streetscape signalling public engagement.

NOWbdg’s sustainability principles are universal, reduce environmental impact, extend building life, reduce operating costs and are applied in full to all projects.

Meadows Primary School and ELC - currently under 6-star GreenStar assessment - is an Asthma Accredited Facility. Radiant heating systems dramatically reduce air bourne dust and natural ventilation keeps air fresh. Materials are selected for low VOC.

Indoor-outdoor connections

Wind Turbines Site Water Management Integrated PVs shade windows

Sustainable design starts with establishing excellent orientation, insulation, thermal mass, shading and ventilation to the best capacity of the site and local climate. These passive design measures underpin any active climate control systems within the building such as heating and cooling.

These passive ‘foundations’ of environmental comfort and sustainability are established from the outset to achieve maximum performance from the building. The measurable success of our projects has been nationally and internationally published and attracted the attention of many leading bodies in best practice ESD including ReNew Magazine and Delta-T in the UK.

Our projects continue to deliver reduced operational energy costs of 50% - 75% providing substantial savings to Clients throughout the life of the building.

Passive Environmental Design is the foundation of sustainable architecture. Intelligent building design in harmony with nature utilising maximum benefit from the sun + wind + earth + water, to light + heat + cool + ventilate a building.

This creates a low energy architecture with excellent comfort and health without significant additional construction cost.

Active Environmental Design is the addition of efficient and clever engineering systems such as on site energy production and water recycling. Combined with a high performance passive design this enables the development to efficiently achieve energy and water self sufficiency.

3D CADD technology is used extensively as a design tool, for quality control during technical documentation of projects and as a modelling tool for the aesthetic and environmental performance of buildings. Our reputation for developing new technologies for sustainable development has achieved commissions which specifically focus on integration of our developed passive technologies to replace or supplement mechanised airconditioning systems. These technologies are fully adaptable and appropriate to a range of project types, including educational, commercial and residential precincts.

Best Practice Environmental Sustainability is fundamental to all NOWbdg undertakings, in all building types. We have developed award winning new passive technologies and are expert in developing new buildings, adaptive reuse of buildings to provide quality environments and optimal environmental solutions.

To Whom It May Concern

In 2008 Warrnambool College engaged NOW Architecture to design a Masterplan so that we would be well placed for future funding opportunities. The mandate from College Council to the Architects was to reduce the college footprint, focus on having a built environment that was safe and sustainable, enable contemporary pedagogy which also provided high level access to 21st century skills, including technology to enhance the overall aesthetic of our site. We did and still, aim to become known as a green school.

In 2009, Warrnambool College successfully applied for $1.9 million to undertake the construction of a Science and Language Centre under the Federal Government   BER strategy.  The School’s existing 1960s construction reflected the LTC model and was very outdated in terms of contemporary pedagogy and use of space.  At the time we described our teaching and learning as working out of egg crates.

Our three barriers to cost effective development were rurality, we are built on a hill, and we are built on rock. Rurality impacts not just in terms of distance (we are almost three hundred kilometers from Melbourne), but in the skills, knowledge, attributes and attitudes of the local community. Designing a contemporary space for a community which values a traditional paradigm always presents as a challenge.

NOW Architecture lobbied DEECD and supported us in our application to build a non-template facility.   They collaborated extensively with us and were supportive and informative through the process. Their knowledge of contemporary learning environments was impressive. We felt that we were in the company of educational experts as well as architects. Their understanding of the broader principles underpinning our needs added features that included catering for sight lines, customised adaptable fittings, protection from the elements predominant in weather patterns in our area, energy efficiency mechanisms, increase in teacher time due to reduced travel time etc. It was a relationship of significant reciprocity and the collaboration was rich and respectful.

In 2011, our students began learning in the new building. Much has changed. It is a joy to observe students peer teaching, teachers team teaching, students in break out areas, community members enjoying the spaces and technology for adult learning. We work towards individual learning plans and differentiating the curriculum – the architecture of our facility enables these practices. Instruction has now moved into a different realm.

Dear Judith and Neville,

I mentioned Meadows Primary in my keynote at the CEFPI conference because it was one of the most delightful schools I have visited and I wanted to make the point that Australasia is equal with most of the world with a good mix of inspirational client, supportive educational systems, talented architect and dedicated teachers. Meadows is wonderful on so many levels which photographs don't quite manage to capture. The highlights for me are the kitchen garden at the entry involving and supporting this diverse community, the beautiful light communal space at the heart, the clever sustainable strategies apparent for students to see and feel, the kitchens and gym and even the custom designed furniture. You must be proud of the contribution you are making to children's (and teachers') lives.

I have been working with Kenn Fisher and his team who instigated a learning spaces module as one of the Bastow Institute offerings and we took thirty or so leading teachers to Meadows and some other schools. The feedback sheets collected after the site visits indicated that the teachers were as enthusiastic as I was as an architect. Your central hub area is such a wonderful heart to the school and place for parents, kids and teachers. There was something quite touching about the treelike structural system opening to the sky that made the space feel almost like a forest. Even in the short time we were there, we saw the space used for various activities by kids, teachers, parents with a small group of intellectually disabled youths eating lunch as we were leaving.

When we began the ARC Smart Green Schools research all those years ago, none of us quite understood how difficult change can be for school communities and the spatial implications of different approaches to teaching and learning. I have visited a lot of schools now in many countries. The best schools are absolutely a partnership between designer and the school community and so I am looking forward to catching up with a few more of the schools you have been doing.

Your hands-on passion for school design just shines through. It would be great to have Meadows as an exemplar on the LEaRN website.

Kind regardsClare
