With a vibrant population of over 160,000 and a thriving tourism industry it’s hard to believe that just a few kilometres away from the bright lights of the Cairns Esplanade, plenty of ordinary families are doing it tough. In the words taken from a 2015 article by Cairns Post columnist, Chris Ellis, ‘Poverty is alive and well here in Paradise.’ With possibly over 12 % of Cairns families earning under $400 per week we think that this is almost an understatement!

As a response, Inclusive Kids has made the decision to expand our campaign, beyond the historic boundaries of the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay regions, to the far north of our state. To this end we have just completed a partnership agreement with our IFYS North Queensland Foster Care team to start raising funds for their Cairns community.

What this means is that any cash donations placed in our Cairns coin boxes will go back, 100 %, to the Cairns community in the same way as they do in the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay regions.

Our Funds Manager, Clint Lovell, states that he is excited about taking the popular fundraiser to the far north. ‘We are very fortunate that our Cairns foster care team were willing to put their hands up to both distribute and collect our coin boxes for us. I hope the community will dig deep to make this exciting move worthwhile for them.’

Message from our Funds Manager

‘We are responsible for the world in which we find ourselves, if only because we are the only sentient force which can change it.’

James Arthur Baldwin, African-American novelist, essayist, playwright, poet and social critic.

It has now been seven years since Inclusive Kids changed from being just a good idea mooted by our parent company, IFYS Ltd, to the reality it is today. Since Letitia Kleehammer, our very first Funds Manager, brimming with enthusiasm and the back seat of her car full of coin boxes, headed out on her initial expedition into the Sunshine Coast community, we have raised over $400,000, mainly through members of the community such as yourselves, dropping coins and small notes into our boxes. Since 2009, families, young people and children have benefited from your generosity and we thank you for stepping up on behalf of those in need. Drawing on the inspiration of James Baldwin, it seems that so many of our community members have taken on the adage that only we can be responsible for the world in which we find ourselves.

While I recognise that it’s important to celebrate our successes in order to maintain our motivation, it’s also important for us to keep from getting too comfortable. Well known author, Jamie Holmes, suggests in his book Nonsense: The Power of Not Knowing, that we should look at any success we

encounter in the same way we would look at failure. This year, at Inclusive Kids, I am questioning what we could have done better, what new things we can try and exploring what hasn’t been done before.

What I am asking YOU to do, as we approach 2017, is to keep looking out for our coin boxes on shop counters and to continue putting your change and even some notes into the tiny slot. As you know, EVERYTHING you donate is given back to needy families in our community. We are one of the very few funds that don’t skim administration fees off the top of donations received. Let’s see if together we can make 2016 / 2017 the best year yet.

A big thank you from PeytonMy name is Peyton, here is a picture of me using my iPad and app that helps me communicate with others, as I have verbal dyspraxia and my speech is very delayed.

I just wanted to say thank you so much to everyone at Inclusive Kids for the money for a iPad, and the money to get the Proloquo2Go, the symbol based app, that has helped me to be able to communicate better with my family, friends, kindy teachers and my speech therapist.

My parents really appreciated your generosity and love that they can communicate with me better.

Thank you again From Peyton x

What is Inclusive Kids?

The Inclusive Kids Community Fund aims to assist disadvantaged children by providing small grants to assist with their day to day care or to purchase items that will create better inclusion in community life for these children. This Grants Fund is open to individuals aged 0–18 years, who live in one of the various areas in which the Grants Fund operates. We believe the grants we make are an investment, not only in the future of the individual, but in the future of their communities as a whole.

IFYS sees that the Inclusive Kids Community Fund complements the giving nature of our employee-driven contributions and our community fundraising initiatives. The Inclusive Kids Community Fund was established to support high quality, viable community care for individuals across the various communities in which it operates.

The Inclusive Kids Community Grants Fund is an important initiative of Integrated Family and Youth Service (IFYS Ltd), a non-government, community based organisation that, in its various manifestations, has operated across Queensland for over 30 years, providing a range of specialist support and intervention programs for children, young people and families.
