INDIE MUSIC PUBGROUP FORMEDThe Independent Publishers Associationhave formed a music publishers division tobe chaired by William Brubacher of WaterlooMusic with Ralph Cruickshank of BerandolMusic as Vice -Chairman.

Talks, initiated by W. Ray Stephens of theFrederick Harris Music Company, havebeen going on for several months, duringwhich time it was found that problemsfacing music and book publishers were verysimilar. Paul Audley, Executive Director ofthe publishers association notes: "The sharedconviction of the two groups that theremust be strong independent Canadian pub-lishing firms, and that government policiesand government support must be directedtoward achieving that end, make the alliancea natural one." It has been found thatmusic publishers in the new group haveproduced the substantial majority of pub-lished Canadian music, ,but that theseCanadian firms are now facing many difficul-ties.

Plans are now being formulated for repre-sentations to be made to federal and provin-cial government bodies and in particularthe Ontario Arts Council and the CanadaCouncil. They will seek programmes ofsupport, directed to the Canadian -ownedfirms. The music division will also establishclose contact with the Canadian League ofComposers and the Canadian Music Centreand hopefully work closely with thesebodies in promoting Canadian music.

out of the country music closet? As a generalrule, I like country music. It's easy to listento and very often carries more of a storyline than much contemporary music. As agenre, it's okay. As a business, in thiscountry at any rate, it all too often is apathetic spectacle. The way I see it, a success in country music

. . . the prophets of doom, the messengers ofmediocrity, will be overwhelmed by the new genera-tion of competent, creative, confident artisans andby all those of preceding generations who haveedready demonstrated their freshness of mind, theirtalent and their capacity for inspired leadership."

requires a couple of things: a good artist, goodmaterial, good production, good packagingand good marketing. If all those things areexcellent, and it has happened, fantastic. If one of those things is bad, forget it, andthat happens all too frequently. How many times have we heard a great songby a great artist recorded poorly? Or evenmore frustrating, a great record packagedwith such economy, both financial andartistic, that it evokes almost a feeling ofpity. And you can even have the worst case,a fine record, packaged handsomely and thenmarketed in a slipshod and amateurish way.

TPC HOT WITH QUATRO,POINTERS, SHA NA NAVancouver -based Taylor, Pearson and Carson,a major west coast record distributor, isexperiencing strong action on product bythree prominent artists, rock and rollerSuzi Quatro, the nostalgia -driven PointerSisters and the kings of revival, Sha Na Na.To consolidate the strong position in themarket place of the three acts and tie inwith a November 27th appearance by thelast named, Ray Ramsay of Taylor, Pearsonand Carson, has put together a set of radiospots for airing over the area's pre-eminentfree former, CKLG-FM. Each act will be thesubject of 'LG FM spots for a five dayperiod. Ramsay, who wrote the spots, hasarranged for dealer co-op print ads to coin-cide with the radio exposure.Ramsay has met with success promoting atleast one of the acts by non-commercialmeans. CFMI, another Vancouv4f outlet, programmed the new Pointer Sisters album,"Live at the Opera House", in its entirety.CKLG FM, followed the next day, also play-ing the double album set from beginning toend.

the country music industry as a whole ispretty low. It's not for lack of trying cer-tainly, the quantity is getting fairly sub-stantial.

It is, perhaps, a too small appreciation ofthe necessity of those ingredients I mentionedbefore being top notch, each and everysingle one of them. If ever there was a caseof one bad apple spoiling the barrel, it is inthe total make-up of a country release.Lack of money undoubtedly has a verygreat deal to do with poor production andpackaging. However, with a little imagina-tion, it is often possible to scale down yourefforts to an economical level without sac-rificing either quality or appearance. Itcosts no more to print a professional lookingrecord jacket, even in black and white, thanit does to print a cliched and sloppy mess.Marketing can often as not be accomplishedinexpensively, with a little thought andimagination. Production, as we all know, doesn't necessarily have to cost a bundle. Many of the biggest selling records havebeen recorded on a shoe string.

It's not, in my view, strictly a money problem, although money obviously makes life mucheasier, it is, rather an inability to make thebest of what resources are available. It is inthis area that country people should undergoa little self-analysis.

Some more positive thoughts on countrymusic: Canadian country music has theopportunity of being perhaps the onlyuniquely Canadian music to have the chanceto evolve. My idea of a really good countryrecord would be one that didn't sound likeit was produced within a million miles ofNashville. There are some in the Canadian countrycommunity who go to incredible lengths toduplicate that hackneyed sound, but thankGod, there are others who are more confidentof their own creative abilities and are plant-ing the seeds today which may become thedistinctively Canadian music of tomorrow. If country music has one thing to offer, it isthe medium's traditional concern with his-tory and the real world of people. If aboutCanada in Canadian style, this breed ofcountry music could become that elusivethread for which so many search, somethingwe can call our own.

WHO KNOWSHOW THE SYSTEM WORKS??Oct. 28/74Thanks for the album review of the new"Dancing" album - the third by the Down. -child Blues Band. "Take advantage of thisclassical jazz/blues group while they're stillaround. The system has a habit of destroy-ing talent like this ... " wrote your reviewer.Jeez, guys, - Downchild's been around forfive years now. As Van Morrison says, it's toolate to stop now. "The system" is workingjust fine for Downchild - it takes time, buteventually people realize that the blues onwhich Downchild bases its/good-time rock -onmusic is, in fact, the basic root of NorthAmerican pop. And when that understandinggoes down Downchild keeps working, andworking, and working - and spreading allthat good music across Canada. The next barrier Downchild has to work onis spreading itself across the U.S. border. There may be hope - Zoo World, the up-and-coming competitor for Rolling Stone, recently reviewed the band's second album,"Straight Up", and called the band "the bestwhite blues group to come down the pike infive years". And they didn't say anythingabout the band breaking up!Richard FlohilPublicity/PromotionDownchild Blues BandToronto, OntarioBACKING AN OPINION ORDISAGREEING IS THE OBJECTOct. 16/74Perhaps it seems a bit presumptious of meto be writing to RPM, when in fact I'm notCanadian nor work in the Canadian market. But, I am in the radio business and amMusic Director and afternoon jock atWKLX in Norfolk, Virginia. After reading in this week's magazine theWalt Grealis comment, I feel some of thecritics need criticizing ... to criticize andoffer no alternatives is just plain bitchin'.Perhaps because of jealousy or some otherfactor ... people who write articles arenot saying ... "this is absolute" or "this isthe only way", but in my estimation areoffering a view on a certain subject. Whetheror not the reader agrees isn't the point, atleast the reader gets a different viewpoint. Some times backing an opinion or at timesdisagreeing. I always thought that was theobject. Now as far as critics go, let them criticizebut until they offer a suggestion to improve, keep up the good work and the articles Ienjoy so much ... I hiven't bothered phoning the 3 majorcompanies involved - the answer is almostalways "not released in Canada" - thentell me why Canadian stations report addingmost of the missing 19 records. One PromoRep based in Vancouver (who has beengreat - and not one of the three) once gaveme Hell for even considering contactingoffices in the States for releases, saying ifenough stations did it - the Canadianoffices would close! Are they close to shutting down, or is CKSPat the bottom of mailing lists because wedon't have a weekly playlist - I hope it'sjust an oversight - and I hope all companieswill compare station listings in the directoryto their mailing lists because I can't believeCKSP is the only one going without.D.R. We at CKCU followed the adviceto the letter. We faithfully wrote to thepromotion managers listed in the article. Wesent them letters explaining our position(we have applied for an FM licence and ifgranted we will be operating in FM by mid1975) and continued to send them weekly ;'playlists, and other letters, keeping themup to date on how the FM application wascoming.Except for a few, (they know who they are)who were and still are very good to us, theresponse was disappointing.I realize that some record companies arewary about dealing with campus stations, because they may have had bad experiencesin the past, but certainly not all campus sta-tions should be written off as bad risksbecause of a few who abuse their privileges.

CKCU operates twenty-four hours a day,seven days a week. We reach a listeningaudience of about 3,000 people a day. Ourexecutive numbers ten. A full-time stationmanager, a full-time assistant manager. BONNIE LOU NOLANYour Little Deeds Of KindnessRCA KCL1-0061-NThis could be the one to bring the talents ofa pretty young Newfoundlander to the atten-tion of the mainland. Young Bonnie, daugh;

PRO

"lime Little Deeds of kindness"norms, Len Ulan

ter of Dick Nolan who sold more than100,000 copies of his initial album for RCA,has a huge appetite for country music and,in spite of her tender years, is able to sus-tain her vocal power to come up with apleasant and well produced (Jack Feeney)package of entertainment for country pro-grammers and buyers. Her dad gives vocaland guitar support and the arrangements byJohn Arpin allow for the young Nolan'stalent to be the focal point of the album.Country listeners are looking for that "cute"novelty artist and Bonnie Lou could be thespark to light up the switchboard. Nice dueteffort by Bonnie Lou and Dick on "RollingIn My Sweet Baby's Arms". There's a lackof good female country vocalists singingNewfoundland songs - perhaps there is wherethe young Nolan could find real confidenceand charm.DAVID BOWIEDavid LiveRCA CPL2-0771-NA two record set recorded at Philadelphia'sTower Theatre during his tour of NorthAmerica earlier this year. If you saw hisconcert you will relate immediately to thisalbum. Contains "1984", "Jean Genie", "AllThe Young Dudes" and "Rebel Rebel". Willbe difficult to find airtime except with theprogressive and FM programmers. Most cutsare in excess of three minutes. Should be afavourite with buyers who are still high onhis "Sally Can't Dance" album.

RAYMOND LEFEVRELes Grands Succes BarclayBarclay 75014-QYou haven't by any chance been looking fora really first rate collection of instrumentals, have you, featuring a little of this, a little ofthat, performed with great style and a littleoriginality? Yes, you say. Well here it is.Raymond Lefevre has managed to treat thetwenty selections on this double record setwith tender loving care, retaining clearlytheir familiar melody lines but backingthem with striking orchestration. It's all herefrom "Yesterday" to "Hey Jude" to "ElCondor Pasa". Have a ball.

RASPBERRIESStarting OverCapitol ST11329-FFor the many of us who thought Raspberrieswere a shallow, if commercially clever, out-fit, this album should help dispel our doubts. There are some fine cuts here. Our favouriteby far is "Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)",a powerful, ballsy tune which is distinctlyreminiscent of the Kinks at their lyrical andmusical best. If you haven't taken the Rasp-berries seriously before now, it is time tostart.TOMMY MAKEMIn The Dark Green WoodsPolydor 2383 280-0Well here it is, the album for those tired ofcontrived, repetitious contemporary music.Makem wends his way, with great style, through a really delightful collection oftunes from the Old Country, and morerecent tunes which only sound like theydo. Pieces of whimsy like "The Red VelvetSteering Wheel Cover Driver" blend nicely.with more serious pieces like the plaintive"In The Dark Green Woods". A relaxing, throughtfully put together album of excep-tional quality which should be played andheard.RUBETTESWear It's AtPolydor 2383 306-0judging by the promotional hoopla surround-ing the release of this one, Polydor has grand-iose plans for the Rubettes. Whether or notthose expectations are borne out here isa matter of opinion but we must say thatfor the most part, "Wear It's At" strikes usas a refreshingly different approach to thenostalgia of rock and roll. "Rock and RollSurvival Blues" is a good illustration of theRubettes approach, tinges of nostalgia up-dated by contemporary arrangements. Whilethey'll win no awards for creativity, theRubettes may well be classed among the topof the heap of the revivalists.T. REXLight of LoveCasablanca NB9006-MT. Rex is the kind of thing parents' night-mares are made of: loud, dischordant, oftenunintelligible. In spite of that, or perhapsbecause of it, the group is one of the biggestselling there is. "Light of Love", if any-thing, deserves an award as the most decep-tively titled album in recent history. Theclosest thing we were able to find to eitherlight or love was the mellow, for T. Rex,"Precious Star". The rest of the album isprogrammed specifically for those intoheavy metal. And come to think of it, ifthat's what you're into, you'd go a longway to find anything heavier for heavy'ssake.

PAPER LACEPolydor 2424 096-0The Paper Lace story is one of the funniestto come along in years, Peter Callander andMitch Murray, as English as fish and chips, mastermind the success of Paper Lace, alsoas English as fish and chips, on the strengthof "The Night Chicago Died", and anothertune about the American Civil War. The realgenius here, though it lies with Callanderand Murray, is embodied in Paper Lace whopresent us here with one of the most potent-ly commercial albums to come our way fora very long time. It's pointless to pick cuts, almost any one of them could make it as asingle, and given the forces at work here, probably will.

JACKS continued from page 1

is red hot, one from the top line. With lessthan a thousand dollars, Jacks achievedwhat at least one major record company haslost a million bucks unsuccessfully trying todo. He knows what he's doing.Terry Jacks detractors insist that he possessesnothing more than a Top 40 mentality and agenerous serving of luck. It's not consideredhip take his music seriously. In manyways, he is terribly misunderstood. Hesimply understands what it takes to produce

record which will be suitable for AM radio. That's his vehicle of communication and heutilizes it with flair. He entertains the massesthrough the 45 rpm record. His critics, in

are barking up the wrong tree: theirdisagreement is with the medium and notthe message. You can't put down Terry Jacksbecause he has his head in the pulse of Top40 radio. Or because he has the wherewith -all to produce what will sell. That in itself isan indisputable talent.Jacks essentially sees himself as a recordproducer. He is a reluctant singer. He doesn'tparticularly like working with his own voicebecause he cannot be objective about it. Heprefers recording other artists. His 11 -yearcareer has been an exercise in the logisticsof supply and demand. He started song -writing because early on he perceived thatthe basis of all hit records is a good songand they're not easy to come by. So hecreated his own - "Which Way You Goin'Billy", "I Was Wondering", "Where EvilGrows", "Concrete Sea", "Good Friends".He aims his lyrics at subjects the public canrelate to.He became involved in record productionwhen he could not find anybody else tohandle the gig. Likewise arranging. Whenthere's a shortage of suitably -equipped out-side personnel, you do the job yourself.

CAN BASE STUDIOS BUSYWITH CANCON ACTS'Vancouver's Can Base Studios, a sixteentrack facility, continues to be heavily bookedwith a wide variety of Canadian recordingartists. RCA's Hans Staymer Band, a Van-couver group making an impact on thenational scene, recently recorded with pro-

Don Hamilton. Terry Jacks' Goldfishlabel has brought the studio considerablebusiness recently with album sessions byBarry Greenfield and Terry Jacks and singlessessions by Susan Jacks and Chilliwack.Mushroom Records has also accounted formuch of the activity with sessions by JaysonHoover and Songbird, both produced byMike Flicker. Album releases by the two areexpected shortly.

wee.......1.

When he couldn't persuade anyone else tocut "Seasons In The Sun", he ended uprecording the song himself and sat on themaster tapes for almost a year before decid-ing to release them.He believed in the commercial potency of"Seasons" for a long, long time. He once cutthe tune with the Beach Boys while he wasproducing a session for them. But they didn'tout their hearts into it and Brian Wilsonwouldn't sing high.- Jacks played "Seasons"for Larry Evoy but Larry was obsessed withrecording "Last Song" So he recorded ithimself. Nearly nine -million records later, you will understand that he has no regrets.Terry Jacks, unlike 99% of the people in thisbusiness, knows a hit when he hears one. Ihave a strong premonition that his newsingle, "Rock 'n' Roll I Gave You The BestYears Of My Life" (an Australian copyright,as it happens) is going to be another enor-mous success. Certainly I feel it's his finestproduction to date. I like what he's sayingand how he's saying it. The clavichord over-dub is a master stroke. There were no doubtsthere. Terry was turned on to the song byClive Davis. You've got to respect his feel for the makingof rock 'n' roll records. And his adaptability.Chilliwack's "Crazy Talk" is a terrific single. And downright mean. Nobody could call thatpap pop. He's currently working on a couple,of other distinctive projects an he's unearthedan idea song to record with his ex -spouseSusan, which I'm convinced will bring thistalented young lady the mass exposure shec16.rly deserves. It hasn't been cut yet butI have no doubts of its eventual commercialappeal. It's right there.Terry plays records night and day at home onHorseshoe Bay, just outside Copper Cove. Allsorts of records, mainly 45's. From James Bur-ton guitar solos to "Love Train" to "CouldYou Ever Love Me Again" to Waylon Jen-nings to Otis Redding to Elton John toNat Cole's "Nature Boy" to "Cry Me A River"by Julie London. The only occasion I heardhim play an entire album right through wasCharlie Byrd's "Bossa Nova Pecos Passaros"and that was in the morning and he was dil-igently dispersing bags of peat moss on newlyplanted bulbs under the balcony. He likesclassics too but rock 'n' roll is his raisond'etre. During one mellow evening, helisted as his five favorite records of thatmoment - "A Salty Dog", "Macarth urPark", "Stairway To Heaven", "River DeepMountain High", and the "Nutcracker Suite".He loves a million others. He has an insatiableappetite for music. The prodigious amounts of money he hasreceived for his creative efforts have notchanged him, he reckons. The battle ain'tover yet but he feels that he's on the rightroad to finding peace of mind. Meantime Idoubt if he'd deny that he's impatient, impet-uous, and introspective. Nobody reallyknows him by his own reckoning. But hislady of the past year, Margaret McDonald, obviously appreciates the nature of thebeast and she's a beauty to boot. Jacksbelieves that good things invariably fall uponhim. Life's a ball to be kicked around atwill.Jacks has no ego problem and he would becontent to produce records until the end ofhis time. That's what gets him off the most.Coming up with those hits, preferably withother artists. That's the ultimate challenge. He's a perfectionist and does the best he canevery time he's in the studio. But he stilldoesn't sit back once the tapes go to thepressing plant. He claims to be less con-cerned by the chart progress of his new

RPM 16111174 - - - 73

records these days. Yet the release of thenew single saw him personally deliveringadvance pressings to local Vancouver Top 40stations ("If I didn't take them in myselfafter doing it for so long, they'd think I wason an ego trip or something", he explains). We journeyed one hundred glorious milesnorth (in a gold VW convertible with the topdown and the heaters full blast, wrapped insleeping bags) to Terry's Pemberton Ranchaptly named Meadowlands but it wasn't longbefore he was on the blower to check out theaudience reaction (as determined by CFUN'snightly Superstar Showdown, a sort of battle ofnew sounds) to the new single. As it turned out,his record blew off the Hues Corp. three -to -one the first night, and Gladys Knight by thesame margin the following evening. He re-mains unconvinced it's a hit. He has un-nerving doubts about his vocal capabilities. So many people told him that he couldn't singin those empty, early days that he began tobelieve it himself. He shouldn't.He desperately wants to be liked by everyone.Basically he appears to be insecure (who inrock isn't?). He has varying flashes of thefuture. At one point he said that if he hadtwo flops in a row as a vocal artist, he'd quitsinging altogether and concentrate on theproduction of other acts. He has no plansto return to performing (he believes thateach of his records represents a unique mom-ent which cannot be re-created on stagesaround the world) but he is negotiating tofilm a one -hour special for CTV. He is insist-ing on a reasonable measure of artistic con-trol. I very much hope he doesn't lose anyof that control as the filming ultimately pro-ceeds. TV executives have a notoriouslyabsurd outlook on contemporary musicmakers.Terry Jacks lives an extremely comfortablelife. He has everything he wants. He'd like toslow down and has been working at it. Lastwinter, he and Margaret spent a month scubadiving off Tahiti. Eventually I think he'llsail around the world. He is an ardent fisher-man, which is no secret, and he cooks upbarbecued salmon fillets that absolutelycannot be believed.

He ardently admires Phil Spector, GeorgeMartin, Gordon Lightfoot and Elton John. He's not too high on Richard Perry or AnneMurray. "Tin Man" is his favourite 45 of themoment. He has the potential to be a pro-fessional golfer and loves it, but he's onlyhauled out onto the green three times thisyear. His time is his own but most of it isdevoted to the pursuit of perfection in therecording studio. He has carved out his success on his ownterms. He knows what he's after and hechases it with fierce and passionate deter-mination. The target is right up there mid-way between those monitors at Can -Base.

But back there sitting serenely atop therocks of West Van harbour, his concertostretches out before him to the pizzicato ofseagulls and the rhythm of the tides -sweetness to the soul, hope for the heart -the caressing grey -furred rubbings of a catnamed Russia, a forest of indoor plants, alifestyle removed, a man on the road to findout and finding out ... Terry Jacks hasthe trip down as tight as it can get.You can't help but come away with admira-tion and respect. He knows what he's doingand he's doing it. And he keeps the bullshitout from in between.

ce&;FRPM you'll only miss itwhen it isn't there!

TRUE NORTH'S COCKBURNSELLS OUT MASSEY HALLTrue North recording artist Bruce Cock-burn chalked up yet another successwhen he pulled a capacity crowd to hisOct 31st Massey Hall concert. The concert was done in true Cockburnstyle - without frills or pretension. Work-ing under a single spotlight on an other-wise dark 2nd empty stage, the Ottawa -born singer held his audience's attention, relying strictly on the merit of his music.During the first half of his show, songssuch as "It Won't Be Long" exemplifiedCockburn's older material which manyfans remember from his Riverboat days. The second half of the concert was de-voted to more recent compositions, mostof which can be heard on his latest album,"Salt, Sun and Time". The album's co-producer, Eugene Martynec, joined Cock-burn onstage to provide guitar accompani-ment during the last half of the perform-ance. Two new Cockburn compositions,"Don't Have To Tell You Why" and"Stained Glass" were especially well re-ceived. KE

ference underway at the Valhalla Inn inKitchener (8-10).John Murphy, Ontario promotion mana-ger for RCA, has long been a supporter ofcampus radio and has gone out on thelimb several times in an effort to keepinterest high on an uncontrolled andthankless happening. He arranged threeprevious campus radio seminars, all ofwhich proved interesting but negativein their results. It was just recently when, together with A&M's national promotionmanager, Doug Chappell another supporterof campus radio, it was decided to experi-ment with an industry happening at theKitchener Conference. Getting support ofthe industry and a continuation of sup-port from their own record companieshas been somewhat of a chore. Layingout extra bucks for campus radio promo-tion where there is a never-ending thirstfor record product and other considera-tions doesn't exactly fit into the budgetpolicies of most record companies.Record companies would like to knowif there is any real value in coddling thecampus radio stations, many of whomhave put themselves on the same footingas commercial stations. There are however, those campus station personnel who aremaking a real effort of providing serviceto their listeners and practical experiencefor themselves. Some of these people havealready emerged in the record industry aspromotion men and in private and govern-ment radio. Unfortunately, those stationssupplying input to the industry are few innumber and, for the most part, are beingoverlooked because of the ego problemsand "looking for handout" antics of themajority of campus radio operations. There is a genuine problem with recordcompanies governed by budgets, that cam-pus radio people should become familiarwith. Record companies are not banksthat can be drawn on for unlimited sup-port. There is just so much money to bespent on radio promotion and there hasto be some indication that what moniesare spent on campus radio stations are, infact, worthwhile. Too often, record com-panies are bombarded by complaints, andeven threats from campus radio peoplewhose only claim to tame is their abilityto go on the air, with great limitations. In a letter to campus radio personnel,Murphy puts it nicely when he writes:"This year the Industry had a meeting todetermine how we could help campus

pot" time forradio and the result is this year's seminar. We have put an incredible amount ofwork into this seminar so please make aneffort to attend both days". What theindustry is really saying to campus radiostations is "get off, the pot". They areextending their services to campus radiostations and this CEC meeting could bethe "acid test". Let's see how many cam-pus radio stations will take advantage ofthis well prepared workshop, where theywill have the opportunity to come faceto face with some of their problems, ifthere are problems, other than thosecreated by themselves. There are a number of heavies who havecontributed their time for this seminar asindicated in the following agenda.FRIDAY NOV. 8/749 a.m. Coffee - compliments RCA9:30 WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM
