W hen the government is secretly spying on your husband, your family is being persecuted, and all of your attempts to legally immigrate to a friendly nation

fail, you can be driven to drastic measures.

The Consul takes place in an unnamed totalitarian country. Magda Sorel is desperate to obtain visas that will enable her family to escape from persecution by an oppressive government that is trying to arrest her revolutionary husband. She applies to the consulate of a friendly nation and is met with stifling bureaucracy. The apparent indifference she endures erodes what little hope she clings to, until a tragic and desperate deed concludes both the opera and her terrible saga.

Gian Carlo Menotti’s Pulitzer Prize–winning opera premiered on Broadway and ran for a spectacular 269 performances. In a world dealing with questions and controversies surrounding immigration, it continues to resonate. In a community shaped by immigrants fleeing an oppressive regime, The Consul looks at what could have been.

A messy love triangle set in ancient Sri Lanka, The Pearl Fishers is Georges Bizet’s “other” opera, written ten years before his popular Carmen.

Two life-long friends, Nadir and Zurga, surpassed a test when they fell in love with the same woman, Leïla. They vowed never to let the love for a woman destroy their friendship. Years later, when Leïla—now a ravishing temple virgin—arrives to bless their village, Nadir breaks the vow and professes his love. The lovers are discovered and presented for justice to Zurga, now the village leader. Enraged, he sentences them to death. Zurga is faced with a the terrible decision: avenge the betrayal and save his people, or sacrifice his village to save the only two people he loves.

Adultery, masked lovers, a risqué bet: Così fan tutte is the Dangerous Liaisons of the opera repertoire as it makes frank observation of the frailty of human

relationships through the lens of absurd comedy.

Two young military officers make a bet with an older friend that their fiancées (two sisters) will remain faithful to them under any circumstance. Their friend, who believes women to be fickle and prone to infidelity, arranges for the men to leave for war and return in disguise to seduce the women. The sisters protest at first, but each quickly falls for the other’s lover, creating a situation where the men cheat on the women by the women cheating on the men. When the trick is revealed, all is forgiven, but will their lives ever be the same again?

Full of sublime music, virtuosic arias, and beautiful ensembles, Mozart’s work is so breathtakingly skillful that it is considered by some to be his best. And if you find the ending a little unsettling, you’ve gotten the point!

Puccini’s opera, based on David Belasco’s play Madame Butterfly, has its roots in a true story of cultures clashing and shattering the lives of all involved. While

stationed in Japan, an American naval officer, B.F. Pinkerton, arranges to marry a 15-year-old geisha known as Cio-Cio-San or Butterfly (Chō is the Japanese word for Butterfly), with no plans to stay in the marriage any longer than he has to.

When he leaves for America, everyone believes Butterfly has been abandoned. Clinging to hope and the promises Pinkerton made, Butterfly keeps vigil for three years with her faithful servant and the young son—Pinkerton’s son—she gave birth to not long after his departure. Puccini basó su ópera en la pieza teatral de David Belasco que inspirada en una historia verídica ilustra un choque de culturas que destroza las vidas de los personajes involucrados. Destacado en Japón, el oficial de la marina americana B.F. Pinkerton arregla casarse por conveniencia y transitoriamente con una geisha de quince años llamada Cio-Cio-San (Chō significa “mariposa” en japonés) o Madama Butterfly.

Al regresar a América, todos creen que Butterfly ha sido abandonada. Adultery, masked lovers, a risqué bet: Così fan tutte is the Dangerous Liaisons of the opera repertoire as it makes frank observation of the frailty of human

relationships through the lens of absurd comedy.

Two young military officers make a bet with an older friend that their fiancées (two sisters) will remain faithful to them under any circumstance. Their friend, who believes women to be fickle and prone to infidelity, arranges for the men to leave for war and return in disguise to seduce the women. The sisters protest at first, but each quickly falls for the other’s lover, creating a situation where the men cheat on the women by the women cheating on the men. When the trick is revealed, all is forgiven, but will their lives ever be the same again?

Full of sublime music, virtuosic arias, and beautiful ensembles, Mozart’s work is so breathtakingly skillful that it is considered by some to be his best. And if you find the ending a little unsettling, you’ve gotten the point!

A messy love triangle set in ancient Sri Lanka, The Pearl Fishers is Georges Bizet’s “other” opera, written ten years before his popular Carmen.

Two life-long friends, Nadir and Zurga, surpassed a test when they fell in love with the same woman, Leïla. They vowed never to let the love for a woman destroy their friendship. Years later, when Leïla—now a ravishing temple virgin—arrives to bless their village, Nadir breaks the vow and professes his love. The lovers are discovered and presented for justice to Zurga, now the village leader. Enraged, he sentences them to death. Zurga is faced with a the terrible decision: avenge the betrayal and save his people, or sacrifice his village to save the only two people he loves.

The Consul takes place in an unnamed totalitarian country. Magda Sorel is desperate to obtain visas that will enable her family to escape from persecution by an oppressive government that is trying to arrest her revolutionary husband.
