Trevor’s Comments for May 2017

Another month has raced past as and we are almost half way though the year . A great night at our recent dinner meeting. Good food, plenty of room and quiet. Lance’s power-point show was very will received here and over seas The BBQ went well and once all the finer points are worked out the trailer will be able to be used by anyone so it should be a stress free job from here on Safe trip to everyone off to Hobart for the convention and those off for holidays Congratulations to Lion David for being made Life member of our club. Lions National Convention

The Lions Australia 2017 National Convention will be held in Hobart, the capital of Tasmania, Australia’s smallest State (they say the best things come in small packages) from Friday, 5 May until Monday, 8 May 2017. Tasmania is like nowhere else on the planet. It’s a place where Tasmanian devils roam, where paddock-to-plate means heirloom tomatoes were foraged for that morning and over 1,000 peaks beg to be climbed. In Tasmania, everything’s close. Cruise a remote South West harbour by day and be sipping local Pinot in our vibrant capital come nightfall. Expect the “unordinary” in this special part of Australia. The dates: 5 May to 8 May 2017 The venue: Wrest Point Entertainment and Convention Centre More info on the Lions Tasmania website – 201t1.lions.org.au/mdconvention2017 Lion David McKenzie was selected as our delegate with Lion Lorraine as an

alternate delegate. The Board approved of a small allocation from our Convention Fund to Lion Lorraine. This fund is designed to encourage members to attend Conventions – especially our own District Convention. Our District Convention this year will be held in Lismore – Check District Newsletter for details.

1. Air Conditioning: The Board requested that Lion David meets with Blue Care at YURANA with the proposal that our Club assists financially with the Installation of Air Conditioning at their Community Hall. Our Club has been granted access to this hall for functions over many years so our Board considered this proposal to be a worthwhile Community Service project. 2. Samuel Thorne: $4600 has been allocated towards necessary aids to allow him to come home from hospital and to be looked after at home. Samuel was a fit and healthy youngster until Transverse Myelitis attacked his brainstem and spinal cord, leaving him a quadriplegic, fully ventilated, unable to eat and not able to speak easily. He tries his best in all that he has to do with the many Doctors and Therapists who are helping him –Samuel has endured numerous procedures since 30 November- all of them with disappointing results BUT Samuel was brave and courageous beyond what is expected of a 10 year old boy. His “it’s happened and I can’t change that, so I have to move forward” attitude really is incredible. Samuel will remain in Paediatric ICU for months to come. However, his family hopes for Samuel to be home soon. Getting home and establishing a new home routine is something the whole family is looking forward to.

3. Time Capsule: $2200 has been allocated towards the installation of a Time Capsule at Redeemer Lutheran College.

4. Lions Camp Duckadang: The Club agreed to make a donation to the Lions Camp Duckadang of $500 towards their refurbishment needs.

5. Lions Biggest BBQ: Lions Biggest BBQ is an annual fundraising event undertaken by many of the 1,300 Clubs across the country. This year, out Club’s BBQ took place at

AutObarn on 22 April. Funds raised will be used to help achieve ALCCRF's mission to prevent kids with cancer dying by raising funds nationally and donating these funds to the best scientific and clinical childhood cancer research conducted right across Australia.

"It never ceases to amaze me what Aussies can do when they work together" said Peter Lamb, Trustee of ALCCRF. Who would have thought the good old Aussie Barbie could have been used to help Lions raise over $10 million for childhood cancer research. Well that's what we have done but the job's not over. More than 800 Australian kids are diagnosed every year with various forms of childhood cancer and unfortunately we are still seeing around three kids dying every week. Why Lions have been passionately supporting childhood cancer research since 1996 is very simple. We believe every child deserves the chance at a healthy life.
