WELCOME TO OAKHILL CHILDREN’S AUDIO BOOKS

U N A B R I D G E D A U D I O B O O K S O N C O M P A C T D I S C & M P 3 C D

Dear LibrarianOnce again there’s a good smattering of fun and adventure, the touching and the mysterious, in Oakhill’s latest Children’s Audio programme. There are brand new authors to enjoy and lots of old favourites too.

Mayhem returns once more as John Dougherty’s fearless duo set off on another adventure in Stinkbomb & Ketchup-Face and the Quest for the Magic Porcupine. Michael Fry’s heroic trio find it’s hard being a member of the school’s Safety Patrol when there isn’t a bully in sight in The Odd Squad: Zero Tolerance.

Unusual sleuths are the order of the day. In Henry Hunter and the Beast of Snagov by John Matthews our eponymous hero embarks on a journey from Whitby to Romania to track down the original vampire. Sam the Secret Agent Mummy is beset by all manner of ancient and intergalatic beings when the legendary Egyptian Queen’s tomb is opened in Steve Cole’s The Cleopatra Case.

As the author’s name suggests – Pseudonymous Bosch – it’s not surprising that this mysterious adventure involving the Symphony of Smells and kidnapped children is called The Name of this Book is Secret! There are strange things afoot, too, in Ruth Hatfield’s The Book of Storms in which the son of storm chasers discovers a shard of lightning in a tree that gives him strange powers. With the arrival of a new girl in his boring home town, things quickly go from weird to worse for Eddie in Gareth P. Jones’s No True Echo.

On the animal front there’s a cute story from Jill Hucklesby in the shape of Little Lost Hedgehog, while in Holly Webb’s The Winter Wolf a discovery of a diary telling of a boy’s attempts to look after an abandoned cub makes touching reading. On an altogether dafter level we have the story of a a chicken who’s the victim of an internet order that went wrong in Anna Wilson’s I’m a Chicken, Get Me Out of Here!

Those artificially intelligent robotic bugs make their return in Simon Cheshire’s Swarm: Project Venom. A completely different creation by a crazed scientist has created the lonely, long-forgotten Stitch Head of Guy Bass’s imagination.

Don’t forget, our new Children’s Audio Books are now available in MP3 CD format as well as traditional CDs. To find out more visit our website where you will find details of these and our many other fine recordings in our ecologically-friendly catalogue.

Best wishes,

Julian Batson

Henry Hunter and the Beast of Snagov

Read by Max Dowler

The Odd Squad are back! After taming the school’s biggest bully, Nick, Molly and Karl expect to bask in Safety Patrol glory. But without a bully to set straight, all they’re left with is helping sixth graders cross the hall and reminding everyone that Jell-o meat stains. Enter new kid Simone, who shakes up the team. Soon Nick is facing trouble. Big trouble. Explusion-level trouble. Which would mean repeating seventh grade ... He needs help, and fast, because if there’s one thing worse than being the shortest seventh grader in the history of the world, it’s having to go through it twice.

About the authorMichael Fry is an American cartoonist, online media entrepreneur and screenwriter. His comic strip Over the Hedge is syndicated nationally and his work has appeared in many print and online publications. His previous Odd Squad novel, Bully Bait, is also available from Oakhill.

Grace is out in the garden feeding her rabbits when she hears a rustle in the flower bed. What could it be? She sits very still by the kitchen door, peering out into the dark. And then she sees some little paws, two shiny eyes, a twitching nose ... it’s a tiny hedgehog! But where is its family? This little hedgehog looks lost and hungry. So Grace’s mum calls the RSPCA.

About the authorJill Hucklesby was born in Brighton, and started her writing career at the tender age of five. She has written for stage and children’s television and was nominated for the Television Arts Performance Showcase comedy writing award at BAFTA. Her previous novels for young people, include Deeper than Blue which won the 1066 Schools’ Book Award, and was shortlisted for the Bolton Children’s Book Award and the Spellbinding Award.

When schoolboy super-sleuth Henry Hunter uncovers a clue about the legendary Beast of Snagov, the origin of all vampires, he and friend Dolf travel to Whitby and Romania on its trail. Unravelling clues from Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and the legend of Vlad the Impaler, they encounter Dracula’s daughter Bella Dracula. But is she a friend or a foe? And can the trio evade the sinister forces that are tracking their every move, intent on releasing the Beast from its underground tomb?

About the authorJohn Matthews is an historian, screenwriter and children’s author who has produced over 90 books on myth, the Arthurian Legends and Grail Studies. John has been involved in many films, as both an advisor and contributor. In 2003 he was the historical advisor to the Jerry Bruckheimer movie King Arthur, and shared a BAFTA award for his work on the Educational DVD made to accompany the film.

The Secret Intelligence Agency has a new weapon: SWARM – artificially intelligent robotic bugs that act as undercover agents. Operating below the radar, they can fly faster, see further and sting harder! They won’t stop until they’ve completed their mission, no matter what it takes. In the face of trouble, SWARM are armed and ready to fight. In Project Venom, the team are set a new mission: at the country’s top research laboratory, SWARM suspect that one of the scientists has gone rogue. They uncover a sinister underworld and a deadly poison about to be unleashed. Can SWARM divert the villain’s evil plan?

About the authorsSimon Cheshire is the award-winning author of the Saxby Smart and Jeremy Brown series. Simon’s ultimate dream is to go the moon, but in the meantime, he lives in Warwick with his wife and children. His previous Swarm novel Operation Sting is also available from Oakhill.

Eddie thinks nowhere could be more boring than his home town of the Wellcome Valley. Unfortunately, he is about to be proved spectacularly wrong. Eddie’s problems start with the arrival of Scarlett, who seems rather too confident and mysterious for your average schoolgirl. She attracts trouble and she’s apparently only interested in two very strange things – protecting the town’s local crackpot scientist, and telling Eddie absolutely nothing about what’s going on. And why is she so interested in Eddie’s long-dead mother? Things quickly go from weird to worse for Eddie, as he finds himself right in the middle of a dangerous mystery.

Danny’s parents are storm chasers – which sounds exciting unless you’re the son who has to wait behind at home. And one night, Danny’s parents don’t come back. Stranger still, the sycamore tree in Danny’s yard seems to have been struck by lightning, and when he picks up a fragment of wood, he can hear voices ... including that of next door’s cat, Mitzy. The stick is a shard of lightning that gives its bearer unnerving powers and it is very valuable. So valuable that it attracts the attention of a Sammael, an ancient figure of darkness and a buyer of souls. And he will do anything to get his hands on it ...

JAMES RIORDAN

When the Guns Fall SilentRead by James PriceJack, standing among the war graves, sees a face he recognises. Suddenly, it’s 1914 again and he’s a young lad back in the trenches. Visions of killing and misery come to him with horrible clarity. But then Jack remembers too the incredible moment when the guns fell silent for a short time, and fighting gave way to football on the frozen ground of No-Man’s-Land. This amazing story shows that even in times of conflict and extreme sadness, there is always hope.
