• Existence since 1999– before service - anonymous– concept of the service was

changing (law 108/2006, circumstances, needs of users)

• Nowadays running in Prague and Brno

• We are members of international nets:– International Network of Street

Street-paper

• Street-paper – street selling of magazines

• Training and maintaining working skills and habits (primary activity)

• Consulting, help deal with private issues (e. g. ID documents, benefits/allowances, housing, finding a job etc.), Internet café

Mission

• Nový Prostor provides possibility of work to everybody who wants (and is able to) work but has not found an opportunity anywhere else. Preventively we help people who can get into difficulties in their lives.

Target group

• Age range of users: 16+

• Target group:– Homeless people– Ethnic minorities, migrants, asylum seekers– People with chronic ilness or handicap – People in crisis– Seniors

• Service capacity: 120 sellers in Prague, 50 sellers in Brno

• Service – prevention/social rehabilitation

• Social workers

• Other qualifications:– Andragogy– Crisis intervention– Work coaching– Disputes mediation– Legal specialization– Human resources management

Personell

Service content• Work activity

– Training and maintaining working skills – Possibility of earnings– Rules – selling hours, place, cards, Seller code

• Individual work– Meeting with applicants (going through offer of the service, rules,

conditions negotiation)– IP (setting and fulfilling targets – private as well as business area)– Dealing with private situation, consultancy, field assistance

• Group work– Meetings with sellers– Sales or social events– Trainings (methodology, lectures)– Board of elders

• Internet café

Possibilities, opportunities, risks

Pluses:-400 - 450 people undergo the service yearly -Further statistics:

- 20 % people with a handicap- 17 % people at retirement age- 20-25 % people found permanent job

-Board of elders-Radio NP (voices of sellers)-Empowerment

Minuses:-Some sellers going around in circles (they return, circa 10 % people reuse the service, e. g. due to a job loss)-Overindebtedness of sellers

Opportunities:-Development of cooperation with organizations focusing on similar target group-Fundraising – multisource funding (not only Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, ESF, but also searching for other sources for service development – magazine, advertising, commercial donners, public collection, special courses)

Risks:-„poachers“ (illegal sellers)-Attacking sellers by passers-by

– lost her job, lived homeless several years, her husband passed away

– was selling NP for six months

– in summer got a job at public toilet service

– Qualified cook - thanks to his profession has travelled Europe (cooked in Germany, Holland, Belgium, France, Italy)

– In the Czech Rep. started a family, lost his job, ended up homeless

– was selling NP for less than 3 months

– NP published article about him, was contacted by a restaurant owner and was offered running whole restaurant – got a job
