Suchisthechallengebetweenthepursuitofholinessversusthepursuitofwealthandpower.Thiswasthefocusoftoday’sfirstreadingfromtheProphetAmos.Sometimearound750BC,thesheepherderAmoswascalledtoleaveoneflockinserviceofanother.GodsenthimnorthintoIsraeltoconvictpeoplefortheirsinsagainsttheCovenant–workingontheSabbathandcheatingthepooroutoftheirhard-earnedmoney.
AmosknowsthatthemerchantsintheTemplearefixingtheirscalestocheatthepilgrimscomingtoJerusalemforthefeast.Thesewealthymenbecamerichandmadethemselvesricherbytakingadvantageofthelessfortunate.NeverwillIforgetathingtheyhavedone,theprophetsays,speakingforGod.ItisanannouncementofGod’sjudgmentonthosewhoaredeaftothecryofthepoor.Theywereinneedofforgiveness,butwouldonlyreceiveitiftheyhumbledthemselvestoaskforit.
InwritingtoTimothy,SaintPaulaffirmsGod’sdesirethatweallaskforandreceivehismercy,andthenshareitwithoneanother.Paulthoughtthisimportantespeciallyforkingsandallthoseinauthority,thattheymightleadaquietandtranquillife,onewithoutangerorargument.ItisGod’sgreatdesirethateveryonebesavedand…cometoknowledgeofthetruth.
MercyandforgivenessareinthemessageoftheparableofthestewardthatJesustellsintoday’sGospel.Thestewardisquitecreativeindealingwiththelossofhisjob.Thestewardwasnotforgivenhisdebt,buthedoesforgivethedebtofonewhooweshimalargesumofwheat.Jesuscomplimentsthemanforhisabilitytolookbeyondearthlywealthtostoreupforhimselftreasureinheaven.ThisappearstobeJesus’wayofgettingourmindsoutofourpocketbookandintohisholybook.TheLorddesiresthatweallshowsuchindustryinourpursuitofeternallife.
Experiencetellsusthatwealthmayleaveusorbetakenaway,butGodisafirmanchor.Thedollarinourpocketisheretodayandgonetomorrow,buttheLordisalwaysthereforus,andallaroundus.ThelateEvangelistBillyGrahamsaidtheLordgaveustwohands–onetogive,onetoreceive.Weneedboth.FoldthosetwohandstogetherandwecanpraytoGodwhoisthesourceofeveryblessing.WhatAmossaysistrue–thatGodneverforgetsathingwehavedone–soletusatleastlivealifeworthyofremembering,alifefullofthespiritualandcorporalworksofmercy.______________________________________________________________________________________
