company coming?

It’s that time! The holiday season is just around the corner—with all its hectic demands and duties, but also with promises of memories to be made with loved ones. If this is the year you’re the one doing the hosting (or even if it’s not!), why not spruce things up for the season with a more comfy living room, a more well-appointed dining room or a perfectly comfortable guest room? It’s never been easier or more affordable. It’s also never been more appealing… with richer, more beautiful furniture details on one hand, and more transitional furniture styling (that bridges formal and informal), on the other. One of our newest collections for fall features all that and more! Stately and handsome, Flemingsburg exudes a feeling of tradition. But it’s far from stuffy, offering a versatile middle ground —well-appointed, but not too formal... rooted in history, but not stuck in it.

Toss pillows, like the assortment on our Bardwell sofa, pack a powerful punch... mixing dark color with rich pattern.

A pair of accent chairs on one side of the sofa—or across from it with an end or chairside table between—isn’t just interesting to look at; it’s a guest magnet!

Warm, traditionally-styled rooms promise warm holiday traditions.

For the living room...

There’s nothing quite like nailhead trim, shapely wood feet and a collection of knock-out toss pillows to create a little drama. But the Bardwell sofa is practical too; its narrow slope-back arms leave more room for seating! Coordinating glass-top tables with stretcher below add sturdiness and sparkle… while sculptural barrel-back accent chairs look stately and elegant with a rich traditional print and wrap-around wood frame.

A drawer chest isn’t just for the bedroom! Why not include some extra storage drawers in the living or dining room for storing games, paperwork, table linens or party supplies!

Armchairs add a hint of formality, a nice touch during the holidays! These ones are dressed up with an upholstered back over a ribbon-motif carving; an elegant contrast to the open design of the side chairs.

Glass-front diningfeels special at the best of times! But in addition to being the perfect focal point, this ribbon-laced cabinet will display your best china (or anything else you love).

For the dining room...

An elegant ribbon-back chair motif softens the hearty trestle-table—an old-world, smart design that ensures extra legroom under the table. (No knocking knees against table legs this year!) The table expands to a full 96”- enough room to comfortably fit ten guests. The ribbon motif carries onto the handsome china cabinet. In a rich dark wood finish, it’s sure to set off elegant contents inside.

A four-poster bed that doesn’t take over the room! Shorter posts are ideal for a smaller room; (they also feel more youthful than full-height traditional poster beds). But there’s no shortage of carving! Check out the thick posts and ribbon motif on the headboard.

A framed set of prints draw out the rich wood color of the furniture. (They also pick up colors in the bedding.) Hang them together for a big impact!

Yes, the ribbon-y motif on the base of this lamp is the same one that’s on the headboard! This designer detail creates a custom look… and creates a subtle, but richly layered effect.

A three-drawer nightstand is ideal for storing small things; always handy next to the bed! It’s also framed and richly detailed, with bracket feet on all four corners.

For the bedroom...

If you liked Flemingsburg’s rich dark wood finish in the living or dining room, you’ll adore it in the bedroom! Applied to thick, carved bed posts and richly-detailed cases, it feels warm, secure and hotel-like. The elegant ribbon motif is repeated on the headboard, complemented with rich shaping on the mirror and headboard. Decorating ideas, ahead!

The richly patterned area rug—in the same tones as the furniture—anchors the bed. Angle it for a little drama, resting one or two of the bed’s legs on the rug to visually connect the two.

This tall dresser is more than pretty to look at! There’s plenty of storage space inside these extra-deep drawers… and a prominent crown molding atop the dresser and mirror adds an heirloom quality.

A warm coffee tone lowers stress levels! This aromatic hue is already in the rug and linens—draw it out in paint colors or drapery, too.

Bed linens—in a complementary pattern to the rug—pulls together the room’s color scheme—drawing out the wood tones and accenting it with a cool blue hue.

If you haven’t considered an armchair in your bedroom, it may be time! A comfy sitting chair is soothing to look at, not to mention a quiet place to steal away! This one comes with hearty nailhead trim and the same carved leg design found on the bed.

What’s a good centerpiece for a long table? Quite simply, long tables need a long centerpiece! A great way to create your own (without cluttering the table) is to place a runner (the length of the table plus 6” on both ends) down the center of the table. Cover it with pine cones or leaves and votive candles, two or three smaller islands of candles along the length or a row of pillar candles down the center, staggering their heights. Make the table runner out of spare fabric or a long length of fall-inspired wrapping paper. (16” is a good width.) It’s my turn to entertain this year. I don’t have a big budget, but I want to dress up my table. Any ideas? Use leaves for décor! Arrange them randomly toward the center of the table, or along its length. Or place a red leaf on each plate. For place-cards, use real or faux leaves; writing each guest’s name on a leaf with a gold or silver gel pen. Fill the bottom of one or more clear glass hurricanes with leaves or pine cones; nestle a pillar candle at its base. Or fill small vases and containers with leaves, cranberries or twigs. Create a long table runner from a fabric remnant in rich fall colors. Simply iron the edges under and ‘hem’ the ends with ironing tape. Freshen up your table with new cloth napkins in a fine-weave linen or burlap. Simply cut them to size, creating a fringe by pulling away threads. Glue or pin wide, rich-colored ribbon (in fall colors) around the base of pillar candles. Place a small pumpkin, bartlet pear or pomegranate on each plate. Write each guest’s name on a strip of card stock or parchment paper, attach with a large-head pin. My dining room isn’t big, but I’m hosting 12 people this year. How can I make the most of my space? Look for ways to expand serving space. Use a sideboard to store food between servings, or to create a separate drink station (corral your ice bucket, glassware and drinks on a tray that can be moved when coffee is served). Consider moving desert to another room; serve it from an elegant tray.
