COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: WEST CARLETON FOOD ACCESS CENTRE This month I had the pleasure of meeting Mary, the President, and Pam, the Fundraising Coordinator of the West Carleton Food Access Centre. These women are just two of the many volunteers who keep our local food bank in operation. Q: Tell me about the West Carleton Food Access Centre The WCFAC is a volunteerbased organization that provides four to five days of food, up to once per month, for those in need. The food bank is open to all residents of West Carleton proof of address is required. Our goals are to provide food so that no one goes hungry to educate residents on the management of food resources provide nutritious recipes and have fresh food available yearround. We are independent from all other food banks and do not receive extra supplies or funding from other food banks, including Ottawa. Q: What's in store for the WCFAC in the near future? Any there any upcoming events? The two main events that are approaching are the Angel Tree Program and the Carp Christmas Craft Sale. There will be 20 Angel Trees distributed throughout West Carleton at various businesses, churches and schools. This program collects gifts for West Carleton children ages 216. This year the gifts will be distributed with the Christmas Baskets on December 21. The Carp Christmas Craft Sale is a major fundraising event for the West Carleton Food Access Centre. Along with local Artisans, Crafters and Etsy Vendors, we will be selling Christmas decorations, baked goods, books, and a special lunch to support the WCFAC. Children under 12 are welcome to shop for the whole family at the Secret Santa Shop. There is lots of free parking. This is our third year holding this event and it has grown in size. Please note our new location! This year, the event is taking place: Saturday, November 18, 2017, 9:00 am 3:00 pm at the Carp Agricultural Hall, 3790 Carp Road. Did you know… you can access your lab results on the portal? Once your labs have been reviewed, your provider can direct message you through our secure portal with their evaluation. This tool enables patients and health care providers to establish a self management process around various lifestyle risk factors. Patients can then access education on associated risk factors to help reduce these risks.

Q: Is there anything else you want the community to know? Each year, the WCFAC provides Christmas Baskets to over 90 families in West Carleton so that all can enjoy a Christmas Dinner with their loved ones. If your family would like to receive a Christmas Basket this year, please call our confidential telephone at 613-­832-­5685. The deadline to register is December 18, 2017. Baskets will be delivered on Thursday, December 21, 2017. Q: How can people support the food bank? To continue to serve our community, we rely on the work of our volunteers and donations from community members. If you would like to donate, please consider one of the following:

Cash Donations: Cheques payable to West Carleton Food Access can be mailed to 5670 Carp Road, Kinburn, Ontario K0A 2H0. Tax receipts are issued for donations over $20.

Food Donations: There are several food drives happening in the coming weeks, including the Santa Claus parades in Carp and Constance Bay, local schools and churches. Food drop boxes are located in West Carleton at Dunrobin Meats & Groceries, Kinburn Client Service Centre, and the Constance Bay Community Centre. Food donations must be physically dropped in West Carleton. Please note, donations made at your favourite grocery store or sporting event do not help the residents of West Carleton. Please be sure to check expiry dates.

United Way: Funds can be directed to the WCFAC through your United Way employer contributions using our charity number 8906 21949 RR0001

Direct Deposits: Monthly direct deposits can be arranged through your bank.

Memorial Gifts: contact your local funeral director or give us a call.

Christmas Baskets: Sponsors are needed to help with the Christmas Baskets. Call the food bank at 613-­832-­5685 to register.

WCFHT WORKSHOP – FEEDING YOUR BABY FROM 6-­12 MONTHS

Join WCFHT’s Registered Dietitian in this workshop that helps parents learn when, what and how to start feeding your baby solid foods from 6 months to 1 year. You’ll take home handouts, recipes, and watch

a food demonstration on how to easily make homemade food for your baby! Workshop is facilitated by Deidra Chipman, RD. Wednesday, December 6, 2017, 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. West Carleton FHT, 119 Langstaff Drive, Carp, ON The following session is scheduled for January 17, 2018, 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. Please note: it is ideal to take this course when your baby is 4-­9 months, but other ages welcome. Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre in partnership with the West Carleton Family Health Team will be holding two community-­based clinics in Constance Bay and Fitzroy Harbour.

OASIS IN KANATA EDUCATION SESSION – TALKING ABOUT EATING DISORDERS

The Oasis in Kanata invites the community to their next free public information session, "Talking about Eating Disorders." Join Hopewell Eating Disorder Support Centre and Anchor Psychological Services to learn more about these illnesses, how to deal with a loved one who may be struggling, and how to ensure the best care for your loved one -­ and yourself -­ as you navigate their treatment and recovery journey. Jody Brian, the Executive Director of Hopewell, will provide an overview of the main eating disorders, followed by Dr. Shari Mayman who will discuss "support guidelines," and then tailor the discussion to the audience's concerns and questions. OTTAWA REGIONAL CANCER FOUNDATION – WHAT MATTERS TO YOU PROJECT

Have you ever received a cancer diagnosis or cared for someone diagnosed with cancer? If so, the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation wants to hear from you! They are looking for patients and caregivers who have been impacted by cancer to share their experience to help improve care for those facing cancer tomorrow. They are looking to update their understanding of the social, emotional, and financial challenges of cancer survivors and those caring for them, throughout Eastern Ontario. It’s as simple as completing a survey about your experience. Participants must be at least 18 years of age with any cancer diagnosis at any point in time, or have been a caregiver for someone diagnosed with cancer. Visit: www.orcfwhatmatterstoyouregistry.ca

KANATA PARK RUN – RUN OR WALK

Parkrun is a free, timed, 5k run (or walk) that takes place weekly with events happening all over the world! Kanata has

joined this worldwide community, offering the run every Saturday at 9:00 am at the Beaver Pond Trail. The event is free, but participants must register before their first run in order to be timed. It’s just you against the clock, so come join whatever your pace! For more information, visit: http://www.parkrun.ca/

LIBRARY BOOK CLUB – CBBCA ADULTS 55+

The Constance Bay Library Book Club is open to everyone. It is run as an Ottawa Public Library programme. The branch obtains the required number of books at the beginning of the month so you can always get a copy with lots of time to read it.

November’s book is Inside the O’Briens by Lisa Genova.

In December/January, you can look forward to Sometimes Brilliant by Larry Brilliant.
